The idea that all characters would be equally useful and get used on all modes/maps equally is fucking retarded.

I didn't say never tweak the game. I said there's never going to be a situation where all characters are useful. Yeah you can change tweak the stats every few months for eternity but that means there's always going to be a small group of heroes that are used. Blizzard and some of the retarded fanbase thinks there's some magical set of tweaks that will mean you can use any heroes in any situation. Maybe this wouldn't happen if they designed a game that didn't have a retarded premise.

I think the biggest problem with Overwatch is that they change the balance every two months. Just look at how much the game has changed since launch. Almost every hero has reworked abilities and that's stupid.
I think a lot of the community feels like they don't change the game often enough.

You can't just patch out a strategy. They've been trying to patch the things that make the strategy so strong, but the problem is it's no one thing, it's a collection of smaller mechanics that amount to an overwhelming force when played one way. They have to try and balance that out by nerfing those things or increasing the strength of counters to it, but without also impacting the rest of the game too heavily.
To give an extreme example, Goats would instantly die if Junkrat did 300 damage per shot, but Junkrat doesn't exist in a vacuum. That 300 damage per shot is absolutely going to have an impact on all sorts of other strategies too and Junk would instantly become essential to every team.
It's not as easy as "just get rid of it"
It didn't use to, but now it does require decent coordination. Any half decent Widowmaker or Hanzo should be able to punish a poorly coordinated GOATS comp because you're sitting on three squishy healers and any one of them going down is a huge loss of momentum.
I played it pretty regularly since launch and stopped at the start of this year when an ear infection fucked my hearing up and I couldn't hear positional audio well, which made the game way more frustrating. That's fixed now but I don't much care to go back for much more than new seasons and a couple QP games every few weeks.
I do consider a pretty great game, though by no means perfect. Definitely don't get why Yea Forums has such a hate boner for it.
The level design is the biggest offender. As long as they are linear, composed of chokepoints and only have a single objective on which everyone crashes into, any sort of class-based game will end up with some retarded ass meta to optimize getting on and staying on the point.
The second biggest fuckup is the extremely narrow roles each character has, let alone the pigeonholing into generic "classes", as well as the absolute focus on everybody stocking their Ultimate to collectively blow their loads and break the current stalemate out of billions of stalemates.
Every single hero needs to be made dramatically more versatile and capable in direct combat (especially get rid of Ultimates, make them normal skills). The maps need to become actual fucking maps with multiple objectives, such as a simple three control point Domination mode.
Whoever the fuck thought that single point objective modes ("that makes it simple and easy to understand! We have absolutely zero trust in our players' intelligence!" not an incorrect assessment when it comes to the Blizzard fanbase ) were a good idea should be tarred and feathered.
Honestly, Mercy when she first got Valkyrie, and Brigette when first released should be the way that every character is designed. Powerful in combat first with whatever teamwork-related gimmicks on the side.

Overwatch is an FPS where each character has unique mobility, defensive or offensive skills that allow them to play different roles. Most characters fit into three primary roles, a tank, a damage dealer or a healer, though some characters are designed to be a combination of them too.
GOATs is a strategy that is very centralising at higher levels of the game due to its overwhelming strength. Typically the strategy involves three tanks (Reinhardt, Zarya and D.Va), as well as three Supports (Lucio, Brigitte and Moira). These characters are not OP on their own (arguably Brig was on her release though definitely isn't now) but their skills mesh so well together that very little can be done about them when coordinated well.
The strategy is essentially to just charge in on opposing team as tightly packed as possible, and then overwhelm whichever opponent is most exposed. Reinhardts Barrier which can tank 2000 damage (most non-tank heroes have 200 to 250 health) coupled with Zaryas barriers (which can only take about 200 but they power her up if they're hit) and D.Va's defense matrix (absorbs all projectiles while it's out, doesn't have a cap but is recharge meter based) coupled with area-of-effect healing from Lucio and Brigitte AND area of effect speed boost from Lucio means that it takes a while for anything to die if they're all grouped up, so it's very easy for them to just charge in and overwhelm. Even if something does get damaged heavily, Moira has insanely high close range burst healing and can heal the tanks back to full on demand. To top it off, actually killing someone is easy because several of these characters also have displacers, stuns and pins.
The only counter-strategy is another GOATS, since anything less just opens you up to being overwhelmed.
As they've patched the game it's become less effective without proper coordination, but at pro level it's still insane.
There's a difference between a "good strategy" and "the only strategy that works against all others" though.

I wanted more tank/support heroes always over DPS. But I think now we have enough supports at least. Perhaps 1 more tank. Supports have too great an impact on the meta and goats has shown that stacking supports can be too powerful. if they have good utility and a little bit of healing then the healing adds up and the utility becomes OP. There needs to be I think a DPS that counters offtanks specifically, dva in particular. something to dislodge her from the meta. mobility+matrix is just so fucking good she will always be a meta pick.

I remember having games of 6 Torbs or 6 Syms on defense. EZ wins. The Torb games you would have 800 armor packs thrown around for easy health pickups, so the enemy can't kill you and with the 6 turrets you were basically cheating by having a 12 man team versus a 6 man team. And with 6 Syms you just die and you come back to the front immediately because of the teleporters and they can't even touch those teleporters because of your turrets lol.
What pissed me most off about this game was Blizzard ruining these two unique characters and making them yet another offense hero, instead of actually making defense WORK.

Or just balance the game better. SMITE has around 100 different characters and for the recent 1-2 years the balance has been surprisingly good. Last 2 pro tournaments only around 5-6 of these characters were never used whatsoever,all the others were used at some point.
Give half the Defence roster antiheal capabilities and suddenly you have the necessary rock-paper-scissors element in Overwatch again.

Yeah, SMITE is actually faster-paced than Overwatch when it comes to teamfighting. Thats how bad TTK rate Overwatch has and I bet thats one of the main reasons people are growing bored of the game. Nobody likes playing with peashooters. A fight should be over in 1-5 seconds max. Also Paladins already does what I suggested and as a result has better balance overall, although the cards help a lot too.

even in high ranks goats is not a perma run by any means. it was at first when goats was solidifying it's place as the strongest comp, but now the people who are actually capable of playing it properly are sick of. ie pros and >4000 players. the ones who probably spend 4 hours a day playing it professionally. Super fast TTK fucking blows. I far preferred the rate in Q1, Q3, and Wolf:ET. In those games the super fast TTK weapons were not hit scan (exception being the rail gun) and could be dodged, skill and awareness extend the fight and make it worth getting good at.
No, in many regards the problem is the opposite. Everyone is forced into awful chokepoitns where you die instantly with almost no counter-play unless you have a tank to hide behind. The shields are -far- too necessary to actually play the game. The levels need to be opened up, shields gutted, and average health needs to be increased to 250-300.
This is why I am losing 20 matches and maybe win one in the process. I can't shoot I lose, that is it. 1 or maybe 2 minutes of game then stomp.

TTK in Wolf:ET was also around 1-3 seconds so it wasn't that much slower. It was on that juicy sweet spot that you didnt die instantly to someone with bad aim but fast enough that 2-3 shots to your head downed you anyway. 4-5 if you were on adrenaline as medic.
In SMITE 1v1 you die pretty much in 2-5 seconds if an assassin jumps on you and you're a glass cannon mage. Or vice versa if the assassin gets caught in your AoE. What makes the fighting fun is the fact every single shot is a skillshot, even ranged autoattacks are projectiles with delay on them.

Not really, a lot of Overwatch matches boil down to both teams jumping in circles around a capture point. And they can jump in circles for very long periods of time without anyone actually dying. And that shit is fucking boring. Lower TTK all across the board would mean Zarya bubble becomes way stronger when Zarya can punish spam with it and quickly incinerate the spammer with her beam. But now when the spammer gets healed, protected and can easily just jump in a circle to avoid that damage, fights get prolonged and spams in chokepoints get a prolonged role in a teamfight where thats the ONLY reliable way to deal damage.
The game needs more burst damage and more nukes, not less. Jumping around in a circle and slapping the enemy with a wet rag for 10 seconds is not fun. The fight being over in 2-5 seconds makes it exciting and therefore fun for both parties involved.

Both PC and console, console having a larger userbase. players ranging from turbo casuals to pro players in what is the first real organised league in esports history. A big part fo balance is people picking heroes and expecting to be able to use their special abilities to good effect. If fights were over in seconds whats the point of having abilites at all. might as well just play quake and have a choice between rockets, railguns and a machine gun. no abilities at all.
You either didn't play Quake or Wolf or you have no idea how long five seconds is. CoD is generally 0.5-1.0s TTK, not 1-5s.

TTK is not what they are talking about. overwatch is the same as cod. if you get the drop on someone and can aim you can gib them with a majority of the heroes. Even the weak offensive heroes can do it. Winston is one fo the weakest voer in a 1v1, but with proper use of abilties his jumppack and gun can assasinate a 200hp hero. teh DPS of some heros in those situations is crazy high. again, if you can aim.

The immediate two posts before me in that chain are both explicitly talking about TTK. The post I was directly replying to was specifically talking about what "CoD has done to FPSs" and "Super fast TTK", which is a bad criticism to apply to Overwatch or Smite since those games have TTK similar to Wolf or even Quake 3 with the LG.

The most fun I had with OW was during its launch, not gonna lie, but launch OW was in a fucking horrible state and only its novelty clouded your judgement.
I think one fix could be to remove the hero switching and introduce Dota style drafting. If you want to keep the hero switching you could allow teams to draft 3 or 4 hero pool that they can switch to.
No because I don't play bronze and any Widow above the bronze would not get flanked by a fucking Reinhardt.
They need to convert the game into a looter shooter, hero shooters was an incredibly short fad that died out
People are unironically saying that Reinhardt is fine because he's melee only.
That's kind of what it was, though. It started life as an action MMO hybrid and some of the classes survived as characters, like Tracer.

Overwatch is shit because TTK is too long. Nobody enjoys playing a game where you feel you're not actually doing any damage to anyone.

As long as the both teams can freely pick their heroes and can pick the same heroes as the other team the meta will always be stuck with very small number of team comps.
The exact same thing would happen in Dota/LoL/whatever if both teams could freely pick from full pool of heroes. There would be one or two team comps that would be the optimal and everyone would just play those comps.
Come to play on console and you can carry any time if you are good.

I have never played this game.
They should introduce the hero elimination for winning team per round like they had in those other game modes. Now pro teams have to make a choice WHEN to use the overpowered team comps because you can only use them exactly once effectively. And lumping up all tanks into one single comp might be a dumb decision later on when you have no tanks left for that match to choose from.
I knew very early on that mystery heroes was the definitive way to play this game and that belief still holds true more than ever. I remember the one time OWL ran that game mode it was entertaining as fuck.

There's a reason why pretty much everyone begged Blizzard to make the mystery heroes a permanent game mode when it was first available. If you could get exp from playing the Mystery Heroes it would be the only mode I would play.
Playing with my ass would be pretty hard too. That doesn't make it any more fun or preferred way to play.

It gets worse because by Blizzards own admission, they listen to both casuals and pros when they balance shit. And casuals demand longer TTKs without realizing how it also affects their own capability of delivering damage and doing plays in the game. Dying in a shooter game is not fun, but having guns that slowly chip away damage from your target is even less fun.

I bought OW at the launch and I don't regret it. It was fun for a while and I got more hours/dollar out of it than from most of the AAA games.

Shortly after Sombra came out. Not of fan of having my abilities on timers, every map being payload or KoTH, Blizzard's idea of character balance, and the lack of community participation such as custom servers. So I went back to TF2 which also has a dead community because Valve suddenly decided matchmaking was a good idea.
