TES has never had good melee combat. Skyrim is the closest to being even remotely acceptable.

Seems like you haven't player Oblivion for a very long time user, let me remind you.
You can't click people to death in Oblivion, you have to time your attacks and use block because block in Oblivion actually staggers you or your opponent. This completely changes the flow of the combat and makes it so much more enjoyable than Skyrim's.
Fancy kill moves don't make Skyrim's melee combat good.

Works fine in vanilla, you use the glove enchantment and the perk in the heavy armor tree if you want to go that route. It's worth it for the kill animations.

Pretty sure only unarmed things in base skyrim are heavy armor perks making your punches hit harder while wearing gauntlets, and the khajit racial bonus. Not exactly what I would call good enough to bother making an unarmed run with.
