At least with the Amiibo you get a neat little figurine for your money instead of a bunch of bits and bytes.
And a lot of Amiibo unlock stuff in multiple games so it's like buying one piece of DLC for several games at once.
I'm not happy about the stuff being locked behind amiibos either (goddamn do I want the NES and Fierce Deity BotW equipment but those amiibos are damn near impossible to find anymore) but it could be a LOT worse.
