Remember that CTR was made in an era where arcade kart stats were pretty much locked into 3 different archetypes of lightweight, mediumweight, and heavyweight. If anything CTR having 4 kart classes was a pretty healthy step forward for the genre (it also did away with kart classes having any sway for collisions in the first place)
Alright, let's get our pre-release stereotype list done and see how right we are when released:

Considering that character voicelines and HUD elements won't be changing and are easy to recognize underneath the visual confetti that is the customization options, having some stability in recognizing that a coco has a kart that drives like coco's does is a stable point to work from.
If you're in 3rd trailing behind a Tiny and an N.Gin, you're probably going to hit Tiny if you only have 1 weapon to attack with since you can safely guarantee that he won't be catching back up to you due to his poor acceleration. If you obfuscate stats, you destroy that subtle decision making that happens when prioritizing targets other than "the person directly in front of me."
Ok so, these threads have recently taught me that the stats in CTR are kind of a lie. Coco and N.Gin being faster than Crash and Cortex for example, and also guys talking about Papu and Tropy being better than other heavyweights. Can I get a rundown of the REAL stat chart then?
I'm pretty sure the all rounded types are faster/better than in the remake than acceleration types. The stats in the original CTR don't actually show their real stats and acceleration type characters were OP.
Well people speedrun the version that is fastest. They even play Dark Souls on 30 fps to run and jump 1% better.

I'm still pretty damn sure that people claiming any of the characters (other than penta penguin in PAL and NTSC-J) have the exact same stats in their kart class and people are bullshitting.
In CNK the 4 bonus characters had better stats than their kart class (N.Tropy, Fake Crash, Pura, and Velo with perfect stats) but I can't find the source on the stat datamine that people keep referring to to verify myself.
You can find source for CTR. They do have different, upgraded stats in some versions.
Just check the wiki, it's accurate now. There's 4 classes of karts, you know what is what, only penta pegnuin in the PAL or Japanese version has different stats.
You're right about n.tropy being better and Velo having perfect stats, but fake crash is actually weaker (2 in all stats) and Pura just has the same stats as other handling characters.

I liked Oxide's design better, but definitely found Velo's story more enjoyable. He's a canon badass that runs an empire and you are his entertainment, and there's no way to misinterpret that; the man is a bad motherfucker even if it's just an alter ego.
Oxide was just a sperg and being good at racing was an outlet for his autism. He probably would've had to ask Velo to help him take over Earth if he won.
I really hope Fat Velo is playable this time as character or a skin.

It's just when you go over a turbo pad while powersliding and hoard the extra speed (it's a bit more speed than you get from normal slide boosting)
certain boost ramps in the game give you a lot of boost to make sure you can clear certain jumps without having to actually jump. But you can use them to get max speed. The length of time you can use these sacred fire boosts are determined by your reserves. I may be getting ultra sacred fire and sacred fire mixed up though.

Also just imagine there's a limitless meter that gets fuller for each successful boost you do. That's what reserves are. The more reserves means your boost will last longer (any boost), but you will lose your reserves if you were to let your boost fade away. You won't lose reserves if you were to come to a sudden stop because you hit a wall or something.
USF is when you have reserves while going over a super turbo pad and the removed speed cap takes super long to decay.
And to think I thought I knew it all about this game. Man this is some next level technique tier stuff I'm gonna have to get good at.

Yeah thought I had it mixed up. Sacred fire is just maintaining the speed you got from turbo pads by doing a mini turbo over them isn't it?
Yeah. Sacred fire is pretty much how everyone learns that reserves exist.
USF requires 'super' turbo pads before huge jumps and your reserves need to be high enough to sustain it.
Saffi fire however is a glitch that occurs from overloading the reserve counter. It causes your kart to cruise at max speed even with no boosts.
Let's see the 'speed kart' meta handle those corners with USF. Not gonna happen folks.

There's not really a trick to it but you just have to make really tight turns. Like you kiss the corner of the wall while drifting kind of tight. I've played a lot and I can't consistently maintain boost on those initial turns on papu's pyramid.

Play a handling character. No really. Everyone discounts them but when it comes to online I think they’ll do surprisingly well.
They're better in the remake but definitely not worth even touching in the original. I recently confirmed for myself that handling characters are complete trash when I couldn't get a handling character to outperform my n.tropy time on slide colosseum, which has the most turns out of all the tracks in the game.

sir I think you just suck a bit. Played Polar on Papu's Pyramid to try and beat Oxide's time. I couldn't do it because the track is shit (had to use N. Gin and still only scraped by) but I only missed it by a few seconds.

No I am the best. Literally any time that a handling character gets can be outperformed by basically any other kart type. If a speed based kart can outperform a handling type kart on the track with the most turns in the game, then it's pretty safe to say handling is useless. Pick a speed kart on slide colosseum on time trial, then try to beat that time with a handling type character. You'll find you won't be able to beat the speed kart 10 out of 10 times, assuming you don't take any shortcuts that you didn't with the speed based kart.

Oh, that wasn't my point. Thing is, you're only gonna be a couple seconds behind using a handling character vs. a speed character. Not a terribly huge difference and certainly not enough to make them unusable. In fact, I'd still argue they're not "completely useless" since their extra turning could be potentially helpful for beginners. I wouldn't really know about that for sure though nowadays, since I think characters like Dingo handle the best lol
The thing is that once someone graduates from beginner status there's no reason whatsoever to ever bother using them. Their statline just can't carry them to victory when pitted against the other kart classes unless items get involved. Hilariously their high handling actually was a detriment once you learned how to powerslide since their tight turn radius meant you couldn't get as many boosts as those with wide turn radii.
Even if they specifically buffed the handling kart by making their boosts grant more reserves to offset how much worse their powerslide boost potential is, they'd still fall short since I'm sure people would rather take a constant stream of boosts from an accel/speed kart over infrequent-but-stronger/longer boosts on the handling karts

Nah dawg, handling characters stagnate behind really bad. It doesn't matter if you're boosting the entire time either. I did what I described in my other post and the handling kart was 3 seconds slower, which is huge. I don't think you truly appreciate how trash handling karts are. They have 1/6 speed dude. Crash is as twice as fast as that, and Coco is as twice as fast as Crash. Handling karts were just underpowered as fuck, utter garbage my dude.

Comparing to the highest base speed of 13900, handling characters are ~93.1% of that speed. Their higher turning can let them take better advantage of turns, too. Them being "utter garbage" is plain misconception.

Where the hell did I even say this? Once again, what I'm saying here is that this apparent disadvantage isn't a deal breaker. Looking at the leaderboards in ctr4ever (bear with me here), the slow characters are about 5 to 6 seconds slower than the speed characters in 3-lap courses (I checked CC, RT and PP). In actual online races this difference becomes much less meaningful what with all the items and stuff, and I feel like very few people will be able to play at the topmost level in order to achieve those times anyway. Sure, they might not be the "best" class, but I genuinely don't see the issue with a class that benefits beginners since there is also a class that benefits more advanced players. Newbies to do not use the speed characters because they are harder to control.

You were arguing against my claim that handling type characters are "complete garbage" so I thought you would be able to to show me a single instance in which handling type characters perform better.

I know the game says there are classes of difficulty on the karts but I don't think it's true that speed based karts are harder than to learn than handling types. I just don't see how a beginner can somehow benefit from choosing the literal worst type of kart.
The stats are different in the remake so there's a good chance handling karts will be viable this time around anyway.
It's a matter of kneecapping themselves before they even get comfortable.
Sure they could graduate from beginner onto different kart classes, and anyone worth their salt will tell you that being familiar with how all 4 control will let you decide which is optimal for certain tracks. But at the end of the day, if someone just likes Polar, Pura, or Ripper Roo regardless of how good they've gotten at the game, their effectiveness will never exceed the hard cap that's placed on them by the kart's maximum performance.
You're right in saying that items basically bridge that gap entirely, but there's a steeper advantage levied in the accel and balanced kart classes because of their higher top speed and acceleration, handling alone doesn't carry even with powersliding. Topspeed of course has to contend with the reality of needing to regain lost momentum in VS mode so they'll be less frequently maintaining position against contendors due to small losses adding up.
Man, I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours playing CTR, and later even more hundreds playing CNK. If the new game brings the magic back, I will end maining all characters.

Velo was FAR more insecure than Oxide though, and that's saying something big. Oxide atleast shown his real face. I respect that Velo has more integrity, he does what he says. No cheating bullshit.
