I haven't got around to it yet, still slogging through Dragon Quest II.

I go to the good stuff first.

Please take this shit to /vr/.

Fuck these games are terrible.

its nice how much porn dq3 caused
also the snes version was godly

Could someone (that isn't japanese and therefore wasn't brainwashed by tons of marketing) break down in detail what they enjoy about dragon quest?
Boring combat that is completely lacking in strategy, boring worlds and characters, forgettable music, what's there to like?

Pretty much the opposite of what you said. It's all down to personal preference user. If you don't like then it's fine. Play something else.

It’s all comes down to being a comfy rpg. Basically a bed time story to play through. Not much else to it. I enjoy them but far from my favorite series. Just play through em on my 3ds during plane rides between the states and europe.

The sense of progression is really well done in most of the games. Charming designs, combat is simple but very balanced. The games with party chat let you see your party members' reactions to a lot of NPC dialogue, which makes them feel alive.

towns are good, dungeons and exploration is hard.
earlier dq games feel very rewarding and will test your ability to manage resources, mainly due to mp healing being rare

later dq games are story driven and basically what final fantasy was before it went to shit, but dq has became too easy for a larger audience

I am 100% on your side desu. I'll tell you why I've any interest in the series and that's entirely nostalgia, I bought DQ8 just for the FF12 demo, and loved the game because at the time, that was A LOT of content and a long game and very fun, and even looked good, and I needed that since FFX. Any other iterations were just yawn inducing. 9 was a goddamn joke. and now 11 looks like a very pretty game, with a decent turn based combat/progression system but its just outshined by everything else. It is mostly weeb posturing or nostalgia that makes people drool over these games, they're not great. Toriyama can do no wrong in japan but most japanese would probably tell you that these games are just mainstream dribble to the average vidya player there i suspect.

11 is a worse 8 but keep in mind we rarely get big jrpgs now

If you think there is no strategy, you haven't played III.

Generally speaking dragon quest games are very played straight JRPGs but very good at being very played straight JRPGs

Explain to me what fucking strategy you used in that game; it's a braindead grindfest and you're just banking on the fact that no one would slog through that shit, and guess what you'd be wrong. So now to someone who has completed the first 3 on their original platform (emulated no save states while stationed in Alaska with nothing to do), you tell me what strategy I had to use.

You had to buff your warrior and shit.

Name ONE female character more desirable than femLoto.
That’s right, you can’t.

Toriyama only makes the character designs, you mong.
I swear to god Yea Forums only looks up the plot summary on wikipedia and pretends they played games.

Most RPGs throw a bunch of concepts and never does anything with them. DQ, especially early DQ, is the epitome of less is more and do a lot with little. Especially DQIII, which is just so fantastic, dialogue and town maps are actual puzzles, things like the overworld being literally earth are used for something, with shit like traveling to America being quite hard in comparison to the populated old world.
I only started to love DQ after I had burned out from the typical RPG, I was tired of grandiose plots that crashed face first into the earth, so shit like III and V were exactly what I needed.

the thing about DQ is that you approach it however you want to and it works
you want to blaze through the main story? rev up those buffs or prepare to grind metal slimes
you want to take your time going from town to town? sure the npcs have neat dialogue and even sidequests, even the party has something to say in the games that have partychat

they feel satisfying, almost every other rpg has some weak spot or occasional stumbles that take you out of it

......You're a complete inbred; Toriyama does the art so that's why the games are popular. That's what I said. Anything he's involved in is extremely popular. Why don't fellate a shotgun, no one would miss you...

Attached: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.jpg (850x850, 227K)

yeah the lack of pretentiousness is refreshing also

>Toriyama does the art so that's why the games are popular.
Yeah because Toriyama's art alone is enough to make a game popular, right?

Yes. Don't talk back to your betters.

That game only failed because it was on Xbox.

I think it's a feat that Dragon Quest managed to maintain an overall quality standard while every major IP from Square Enix became passable at best, a dumpster fire at worst

Attached: gee I'm being oneshotted by a rug.png (1255x1057, 415K)

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Toriyama's art is the only reason anyone remembers Blue Dragon at all.

>Uses blue dragon to illustrate his point
First thing on wiki
>Pre-orders of Blue Dragon bundled with a limited edition Xbox 360 Core system were sold out in Japan well before the December 7, 2006 release date.[43]
Literally a new completely alien IP, with toriyama's signature slapped on the cover, completely sells out in japan before it's released. You just played yourself.

OOF LOL
I'm the (you) in your quote and boy did you get shut down quick and not even by me. Thats a yikes from me.

DQ is the ultimate zoomer filter

lets go

>hurr durr i wasn't talking about the games themselves I was talking about their popularity hurr
What about the US?

Attached: you.png (800x729, 48K)

>Boring combat that is completely lacking in strategy
the first two maybe. all the others require utilizing buffs and debuffs to survive unless you grind like a little baby

Attached: youu.png (339x133, 24K)

He specifically said that Toriyama's clout is strong in Japan (which is true). You have no point, you're just arguing because you REEE'd and are now trying to cope with the fact that his point was moderately well made.

>Not playing a tomboy Female who only wishes to live up to her father's name and emulated him her whole life, playing tough but in truth just being a little girl who wants her dad again. All this leading to the moment where her father dies in her arms.

>braindead grindfest
total brainlet

Kino

I'm gonna take that as, you're wrong and have nothing to say. I'll even say in spite of your rabid defense of the game, you probably didn't finish it...

>moving the goalposts this hard
Next you will tell me that the series got popular because Toriyama copied Wizardry and Ultima (because you looked that up on wiki).

It's probably my top 5 games of all time. Still play it every couple years.

man she sure does love being raped and prostituting herself

What? That's not what we're talking about, his art sells the games; his legacy sells the new trash DBZ too. That's what it is. You're undeniably wrong if you disagree.

/LGBT/

If you don't fight Zoma in one-on-one combat you are gay. A real hero journeys the world alone. Just like your old man.

You're asking for some flashy experience that wasn't ever promised. DQ3 is pretty much the core fundamentals of a fun console RPG with a little extra thrown in, unfathomably perfect balancing and progress, and a sufficient bulk of side content that is more significant than just alternative dialogue choices.

Do you know who Yuji Hori is?

Someone post one of the several cherrypicking "WRPG VS JRPG" images

...the first game was out before he even got popular...the games got popular because it was a family friendly wizardry/ultima...those two series were popular in japan...but since pc were expensive no one could play them...then dq came and made the games available for everyone, thus becoming a hit...also horii is the director...not toriyama...and yes retard...the games are casual because they are still family friendly to this day...

DQ2 is good man I beat it last week.

They're crafted with a palpable sense of polish and affection. Horii still obsessively play tests every entry to this day. The series, collectively, is the seminal master work of the craft.
