I always play on the highest difficulty that is still x1 damage dealt/received, x1 resource rate, etc. Anything that treats "max difficulty" as stat bloating "You deal 25% damage and take 400% damage" is trash.

You usually can't, it's always fucking locked behind beating the game once and more often than not there's no desire to play it again anyway. For example played lords of shadow on the hardest difficulty available at the start, played like 6 levels of paladin once i beat the game and got bored cause I'd done it. Difficulty increase isn't enough to keep you interested a second time, the fun of hard modes is learning how to manage them blind your first time playing.

I usually play on almost-hardest, as most of the games I play are RPGs and putting it on the last difficulty without previous knowledge on some games means you might spend days of your life attempting to farm some uber speshull item, be forced onto certain party formations and overall have a worse experience playing just for the sake of saying you beat it on the highest difficulty, which a lot of times is just plain bullshit instead of challenging.

Meanwhile, if you go just one back, you get a legitimately fun and challeging game, it feels just right most of the time.

You just have to understand that some difficulties were made for those autists who do shit like no-hit runs.

Fuck lazy devs who just turn the HP slider on all their enemies up to 5000% for their max difficulty. If I wanted to empty an entire inventory of bullets into one enemy I'd be playing Destiny.
