lads how do I into umineko
is the steam version some soulless remake

Don't fall for the memes, play the version with voices and PS3 sprites.

you can easily mod the steam version to get ps3 sprites and voice acting, so it's fine

play the vn

PS3 sprites are shit. At least try the original sprites. The only people who don't prefer the original sprites are people who never tried them and just took one look at them before patching in PS3 sprites. Also the Steam version (don't let the name mislead you, it's available on other places like GOG too) is perfectly fine, it has both new sprites and old sprites just don't use the new sprites. Even PS3fags agree Steam new sprites are shit. Voices aren't necessary, it was written without voices in mind after all, but I believe you can patch them in while retaining original sprites

tl;dr If you want to get into it easily just play the Steam version with original sprites, and if you have shit enough taste that the original sprites end up really bothering you somehow then patch in PS3

>wanting voice acting and art drawn by someone who's not a complete amateur who's worse than the average 12 year old at drawing makes you a le shit taste casual
Truly epic my good sir

>voices and PS3 sprites.
Umineko is a novel. You are not supposed to be looking at the pretty sprites. The originals are expressive and improve the experience, but they never distract you from the narration or prevent you from imagining the scene yourself. That's where the PS3 sprites and backgrounds fail and feel awkward.

The voice acting is great, but I still think the experience is better, more dinamic and less cringy if you imagine the voices in your head. There is nothing more awkward than having a super fast battle slowed down by voice acting. Or accidentally clicking and interrupting the voice acting. Or having the music loop 5 times in a row because the voice acting made the scene take way longer than it should.

The original novel doesn't have any of those problems and the whole aesthetic is much more charming and interesting to look at. The updated sprites and backgrounds look nice, but they feel sterile, boring and artificial compared to the originals. I'm not saying they are shit, but I think they are worse.

Attached: Ereeeeeeh.jpg (400x342, 55K)

whatever you do, play WITH the voices.

Attached: god_rage_wtf_giveup.png (321x460, 46K)

I'm not denying the quality of the voice acting. But they are completely unnecessary for a first playthrough. They are however a really fine addition when you're reading Umineko for the second time, and despite its length, it's something you have to read at least two times to fully get it.

Read it with original sprites without the voice acting first, then do what you want. But make sure to experience it first in the way it was intended. The author, despite his poor drawing skills did his best to convey particular meanings behind some of the characters expressions or lines associated with those, IT'S NOT WITHOUT A REASON. Who will you trust more, the man who made up the story/characters or the people adapting it in order to appeal to a wider audience?

Ignore what I just wrote if you're an ironic weeb.

Attached: 1264531335948.jpg (436x459, 39K)

Like I said, if the original sprites bother you that much then patch them out. I'm saying give them a try first. I think anyone who actual played with them will tell you that the facial expressions are absolutely perfect and convey so much more emotion and that they all have an incredible amount of charm that is lost in the PS3 sprites.
As for voice acting I'm more mixed. If you want to play with voices go ahead, I never said that was shit taste. I just think it's not necessary. I remember when I played FSN for the first time with voices I thought voices were mandatory and couldn't imagine reading it without voices but when I finished reading Umineko and found out there were voices that I didn't use and then went to listen to some examples of them on Youtube, I really didn't feel like I missed out on much. The voices I imagines in my head were plenty expressive, Ryukishi's writing is good enough to make you imagine things in an interesting way

i wanted to say that sprites choice is your typical baby duck shit and you'll like whatever you'll play first, but this latino chad face made me chuckle

anyway, download original game from piratebays, then patch ps3 sprites or not, in the end it won't make any difference for you. you'll love the game you'll play, and it should be just as good with the modern sprites

Attached: header.jpg (460x215, 50K)

I'm not sure if you'd ask Ryukishi he would tell you to play without the voices. Your argument falls apart pretty quickly.

>Ryukishi's writing is good enough to make you imagine things in an interesting way
Did you play it in Japanese?

Do you think there's no correlation between the writing of an original work and the writing of a translation?

Attached: BEATORIIICHEEEE.jpg (400x500, 185K)

Not him, but when I first read through this moment in the visual novel I imagined her voice to be more creepy, I don't know. The new versions didn't really catch that feeling in my opinion.

Attached: EP7.png (640x300, 249K)

...

It depends on what you mean by "writing" but assuming you mean the prose/dialog then not really.

Original everything. Trust me. After you finish the whole thing, you'll undertand why it was a good idea and how foolish the PS3 apologists are.

This is a sound novel. Your are not supposed to be looking at pretty sprites and detailed backgrounds. They are only there for you to occasionally glance at them and understand the mood of the characters and the general atmosphere of the scene. The original sprites and backgrounds do that job A LOT better, are more charming and there is nothing distracting or "off" about them. The PS3 assets are plagued by weird pespectives, unsubtle facial expressions that sometimes fail to convey they emotion they are supposed to (especially in Higurashi) and feel really empty and lazy (i.e. Rosa's phone). The extra detail actively detracts from the experience and makes it obvious that the backgrounds are being recycled for completely different places.

Attached: clover.jpg (1280x630, 30K)

based and thenapilled

That's why Umineko loses something when you add voices. Some elements of the story rely on the fact that you are READING a voiceless sound novel. Same reason why an anime adaptation would never work at all. Umineko relies on narration and text, you can't just translate that shit to a visual medium. The text describes Shannon and Will's conversation as normal. She is supposed to sound normal. No robot voices or sound distortions. AND YET, there is a weird, incomprehensible, tense atmosphere as they talk.
This is something that can only be achieved with text and text alone. You have to imagine what that feeling would be like, helped by the wEIRd TeXT.
Once you add voices, they fill in the blanks and prevent you from imagining that indescribable feeling described in the narration. You can actually HEAR Shannon's voice. You can't imagine the sound yourself. And she sounds perfectly normal. It's a let down. But if she sounded like a robot, it would be a let down too.It only works without voices, because your mind is confused and can't quite imagine what the narration is describing.

It's like the Nothing in the shitty Neverending Story movie. It's a concept that gets ruined once you try to show it visually.

the steam version has the worst art ever concieved by man but it's very easy to mod into the ps3 graphics or the original graphics.

choose what you prefer just don't play with the steam sprites.
also play with voice acting or you are missing out on a lot of good shit

Honestly I just want people to play the game, regardless of sprites, voice acting or anything else additional.

Is she dry humping that pile of gold?

Same. I might have been a little too autistic defending the original sprites, but I really love Umineko and I wish more people knew about it. It feels like there was a "before" reading Umineko then an "after"

Attached: blessed_image.png (721x480, 245K)

Same and I also was someone who would autistically defend original sprites and I don't even have nostalgia, I only played it 2 years ago. i couldn't imagine my life before I read this story and i wish I could experience it again but cannot, so I must live vicariously through others and Let's Plays.

I made it to the 4th episode and dropped it.
Thing becomes more nonsensical in each episode.

Episode 3 and 4 kind of shine a light on getting through the nonsense. You should play EP4, in case it has the most nonsense out of any episode and it's great for it but it also has pretty much the most important character in it.

It's been only three years for me. I was looking for something to fill the void of mystery games while waiting for ZTD. I had watched the Higurashi anime a few years back so I thought "what about the sequel?" Then Umineko came to mind and fortunately I didn't watch the anime so I experienced it as it was intended. If I didn't fuck up applying the PS3's English patch by mistake and assuming it was a corrupted version, I would never have read Umineko with the OG sprites. I love my brainlet old self. Watched the piss-poor quality anime when I completed the first four episodes while waiting for Chiru to download, then finished the novel. It was a great ride, even if I missed the crazy theories or the wait between the releases/translations.
Episode 4 was a real drag to read at first, I can understand your sentiment. It's in my opinion the most important one with EP2 in order to fully get Umineko, but you only understand this during your second read.

Attached: biz anons.jpg (700x475, 118K)

If it helps, Ciconia will have a simultaneous release in English and Japanese, so we can all theorycraft together and not get spoiled.

Attached: 1540589370012.png (473x492, 195K)

God, that moment in EP4 when you find out about the reason why its said just kills my heart, i understand why people dont like how it drags on too long, but it is for sure my favourite ep of questions

Attached: 129950950431.png (439x480, 84K)

Based Ryukishi and Witch-Hunt. I wonder how Yea Forums did react when their name were mentioned by the guy in EP4. I didn't even notice it was a reference to the translation team, I thought the team took the name the character mentioned but I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was in their honor. Cute

Attached: 7fe3bbba410f7a8c939af653f311ed21.jpg (1024x768, 614K)

For me 3 was my favorite during my first read but man after several rereads, EP2 is the fucking best. I really do like EP4 and I thought it did drag on mostly because it didn't have a lot of game board for half the episode but man does it make my heart hurt almost the entire episode and all the songs attached to Ange and Maria.

why the fuck wouldn't people play with ps3 sprites and voices

I don't care how people play but I personally would do OG everything for first read, PS3 everything for second.

>expecting people to replay a 100 hour vn

how about no

I'm not expecting but people who really like the story do it. They even talk about how murder mystery stories are supposed to be read in Umineko, you read once to enjoy the experience it and try to solve it, you read the second time to rip out the insides. It's amazing how much foreshadowing is all over the story and you have no idea normally.

Image maker here. Glad you liked the edit.

Not that OP but I love it.

What's there to argue. Anyone can see that the PS3 art is professional while original art is amateur.

Didn't he release a new one a few weeks ago?

How long until it's translated?

But don't people only like this for the cute girls?

Reminder that this steamed hams meme edit, while being funny as hell, is actually a perfect example to explain Ryukishi's narrative tricks or how some fatal looking red truths can actually be circumvented quite easily if you think outside the box.
Especially true for the red truth in EP4 about Battler's mom not being Asumu.

Attached: Stakes.jpg (1920x1080, 1.14M)

Thanks. I've been brainstorming possible combinations for future edits.
Ange x Maya, Maria x Pearl, Amakusa x Klavier, Will x Blackquill, Rudolf x Godot, Kyrie x Mia, Gohda x Gumshoe, etc.

i mean that is literally the case. Ryukishi drew his own sprites where Alchemist hired people to do it.

Purists who hate change. They refuse to admit anything the remakes did improve on the experience.

It's actually insane how much the person who made this edit replicated the narrative and made it feel like an actual chapter. Only fan game board I read is just this one and Witches and Woodlands.

OP here, I really love the stuff you're doing since it's related to Ace Attorney. I've been posting your edits on Yea Forums in AA-r07 related threads for one or two days and some other people seem to like them as well, Wright and Edgeworth got posted ITT and not by me. Keep up the good work.

Attached: Magical_Japanifornia.jpg (2580x1366, 2.02M)

That is actually false, most people say the voice are actually very good but make the story much slower as a result. The BGs and most CGs though are actual garbage. Some BGs are 10/10.

Attached: 3.png (1920x1080, 1.44M)

As someone who recently played through it...

>Sprites
PS3
>Voices
No

If you do voices you literally lengthen the game by like x4. It's insane. I turned off the voices when I hit chapter 2 and the massive length ended up being much more tolerable.

Just finished downloading Umineko, what am I in for?

Attached: 1542645304555.png (252x288, 108K)

Some of the voice acting in general is very amazing but yeah it really does add too much length.

Amazing first chapter, legit terrifying and will leave your mind running wild.

Then chapter 2 will make you realize nothing fucking matters and you'll quickly grow bored with it.

Get the fuck out of here. Play the game however you want but Ryukishi would like readers try to actively solve the mystery but is fine regardless, The blinder you are to the story, the better.

a wild ride

Attached: Screenshot_20190325162008.png (1300x1144, 689K)

The BGs are beautiful. Way better than budget low-res photos put through a filter. And there's only a handful of CGs that look bad. A vast majority are wonderful. If you think the voice acting and CG detracted from this scene for example then you're either a liar or you're in denial.

Attached: g0103.jpg (2721x1080, 2M)

If you want more horror stuff then read Higurashi or Higanbana.

Thanks. I'm glad to see it so well received.

Link to pic related, no idea what it is.
That is one of the good scenes and I never said voice acting was bad, in fact the voice acting is amazing, it just makes the game longer.

Is it that normal I'm unable to lewd any Umineko character and just want to befriend them or something? I wish I could spend an afternoon having fun with the stakes like ange did in EP4, they seem like cool persons to hang around with.

This CG is perfect and is a rare case when the PS3 version was good
But the cringy close up to Maria's face isn't

I haven't played L4D2 in years. This is a pretty good video too.

You are not alone user, it feels like there's a connection that develops with these characters as you keep reading on and find more about them, it's like i dont wanna taint that connection at all

It sucks because they pretty much took another notoriously bad CG and remade it for Maria.

Attached: pic_0009.png (640x448, 92K)

This. People often forget about how great Legend was to setting up the tone. I hated the sudden shift in EP2 with the magic battles and stuff, since I came for the mystery part not to read boring Fate shit but in the end it was a great experience.

The problem with playing without voices is that it is sometimes unclear who is saying what. For your first playthrough it can be kind of tough.

A LP I really like played without voices and did voices themselves and played a game to see if they could match voices to characters and failed a lot.

This one fucking ruined that scene in Higurashi

Another prime example of a case where voices and CGs where unnecessary. The creepy effect created in your mind of the hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee in combination with the eyes looking straight at you in the visual novel when you read it cannot be replicated. It felt cringy in the Alchemist and the anime versions. Still, what a memorable laugh. The seiyuu was very great

Dude you are like an hour or 2 into a 130 hour VN. If you want to quit now then VNs aren't your medium.

I don't know about Umineko porn either, sadly. I can't lewd the characters in my mind. I saved those pictures because I found them either funny, interesting or cute. I'm sorry.

Remove the voices and keep going. Put them on at chapter 2
Or better play it with the OG sprites and backgrounds you fucking cuck

It just randomly came to mind when looking at that picture. I can't either so it would just be for science.

Could you show an example for all this?

Time for the OG experience I guess. At least I won't have to hear Maria anymore

I don't have a clear visual example to show you, I hope you'll be satisfied with this explanation. In the original novels, you can see the backgrounds but you can't really see any details. Whereas in the "updated" versions, everything is made clear enough for you to see. Some examples would be the phone and the super detailed 3D chain in Umineko. Or the super detailed ash tray in Higurashi. They feel extremely generic somehow, there's nothing unique about them. But since they are so detailed, you can't help but notice that Rosa's phone is the same as the one in the mansion, and the same as every other phone that appears in the story. Even the generic picture of a plant that sits next to the phone is the same every time a phone appears. It's obvious that it's just a recycled background and it just takes you out of the story. It looks silly.
It's why in my opinion the detailed drawn backgrounds in the re-releases make these places feel less realistic and give us too much detail, leaving no room for the imagination. The image is too clean and you can easily see how boring and empty everything looks. And the perspectives look strange sometimes because there isn't a separation between the realistic backgrounds and cartoony sprites. The PS3 version lacks that separation and makes it harder to use your imagination. The sprites look like they belong in that world and the whole perspective makes everything look off.
The blurry photographs are more artistic, even if they didn't take too much effort to create. They are just very interesting to look at. There is more to art than technical detail, don't be a dumb goat. The whole experience is better and more cohesive without any patches.

Attached: 1535400382701.png (640x480, 448K)

I guess that makes sense, but it doesn't sound much different from reading a book at that point.

There's a modest amount. About a thousand R18 results on pixiv and about 240 results on sadpanda (including duplicates for translated versions.) The amount of lewd art is pretty decent for a fandom of its size, but not too much.

We all told you voices make the playtime way longer

Please refer to

You know there's a version where you can mute individual character's voices right?

Higurashi, and Umineko to an extent, are sound novels. I will quote this user's words :
>You are not supposed to be looking at the pretty sprites. The originals are expressive and improve the experience, but they never distract you from the narration or prevent you from imagining the scene yourself. That's where the PS3 sprites and backgrounds fail and feel awkward.

Also, Ryukishi often uses vague facial expressions that convey different emotions depending on the context. Only the original sprites do this well. The updated versions lose that subtlety and look awkward at times. It's very noticeable in Higurashi, admittedly a little less in Umineko.
There's something about Ryukishi's deformed sprites and the blurred real life backgrounds that make his novels feel even more immersive. It's like your mind just accepts that bizarre-looking world and gets lost in it more easily.
It's also a very unique art style that stands out and makes you feel happy when you see it. The PS2/PS3 artwork is much more generic. And the backgrounds are awesome. Since they are photographs, they feel very realistic, but the blurring gives them a surreal vibe that matches perfectly with the character models and the story itself. It makes them feel separated somehow, so you never find a scene ridiculous because of the perspective.

However, despite what I just wrote, I'm not completely dissing the updated visuals; as they are perfectly fine for a re-read. It's just that I can't help to autistically promote the OG sprites if given the occasion, since it's pretty much the optimal way to experience the story first. After all, it's how the writer intended it to be read. The choice is ultimately up to you, fren.

speak for yourself, some of us like art that actually looks good

This is about Higurashi rather than Umineko but I definitely noticed that the original sprites do a really good job at being cute when they're supposed to be cute yet creepy when they're supposed to be creepy. Like, literally the same sprite can feel happy and cute in one scene but in another it feels like their eyes are peering into your soul. And the angry sprites look better in the original in my opinion, I don't really know how to explain why though.

For Umineko it's mainly Battler and Beato, literally nothing can beat OG Battler's crying portraits or OG Beato's countless smug faces. I really like old Bern as well, new one just looks like a generic frowning loli but old feels like more than that in a way I don't know how to explain. Oh and lets not forget original Kinzo, nothing can replace that. There's a few characters I like the PS3 sprites for though, like EVA for instance

you are a goat

i love rabid umineko fans you guys are always so entertaining

I see, what about the voices themselves then?

Says the one denouncing anyone with differing preferences.

And I agree, there are some things I can't even look at like the Ace Attorney Trilogy's remastered sprites on PC. But generic anime art and backgrounds isn't what made Umineko so good, to begin . Ryukishi's art and the strong identity behind it are sufficient on their own to carry the story forward.
I'm starting to get tired, but this simple quote from his post (which I don't advise you to read if you don't want to be spoiled, sorry for quoting it to you earlier) should be enough.
>Some elements of the story rely on the fact that you are READING a voiceless sound novel. Same reason why an anime adaptation would never work at all. Umineko relies on narration and text, you can't just translate that shit to a visual medium.

Thank you for the explanations, I'll play the original whenever I finally get around to this.

I never understood the whole "it's how it was intended to be read" argument. I'm pretty sure the only reason the original is in that format is due to budgeting restrictions.

I don't even get what's wrong with Ryukishi's art. I bet these are the same people who mod out ZUN-art from Touhou games.

Can I also add that the ambigious nature of the plot works better with the blurred background? You never really know what is going on in some scenes anyway.
This is a novel about trying to figure out whether a witch exists. If you can see the woman claiming to be a witch clearly in an anime cg it feels a lot less ambigious. Showing pic related, Beatrice on a balcony for example, changes the reader's perception of her. By her own admission in the plot, appearing in person is like bringing out her Queen piece in Chess. To bring out the queen is a risky game because it is powerful, but it could also get taken. In the original you are never sure if the witch is there or if you are seeing some trick, because it is just a sprite on the background. It's rainy and blurry and here's this witch sprite. Is it a witch? Who knows, you know? So you keep reading. The more detailed you make Umineko's world, the less mysterious the whole thing is.

>PS3 artwork is best
>No, original is

AHEM

Okay so it's been like 8 years or whatever, does anyone know what the deal with the missing letter is yet?

What are PS3fags going to do with Ciconia? They're going to be forced to use the Ryukishi art that they hate so much

Why do we have to keep having this argument over and over again? We're all fans of the same story. Who cares what format you choose to enjoy it in?

Maybe it has to be taken like how some developers with restrictions ended up polishing to the max what they could or pushed à given console to its limits but on an optimized kind of way. Gta Chinatown Wars on the DS is a great example of how with less you can still build a lot.

Attached: Screenshot_20180511-171119-01.png (1920x978, 1.29M)

Because people are asking which one to use and one is objectively superior to the other

That's not an issue. Having a preference for PS3 doesn't mean you can't enjoy OG. Most PS3 fans don't even mind Ryukishi's art. Every time I see this argument spring up, it's not because some PS3 fan insults the OG art. No, it's always the OG art fans trying to start shit by claiming the PS3 art made it worse. It's like they're conditioned to be overly defensive about their preferences since they know it doesn't appeal to the mainstream.

Sure but if it didn't have that budgeting restriction it probably would have been written slightly different. Writing something with voice acting in mind is different from writing something without voice acting in mind. It's not a huge difference but it is there

xd

>It's like they're conditioned to be overly defensive about their preferences since they know it doesn't appeal to the mainstream.
Kind of, it's more like there's often the assumption or the implication that the original sprites are worse even if it's not outright said, so you do kind of have to argue against that if you're going to recommend the original sprites. Well I suppose you don't have to insult the PS3 sprites but usually when someone says they're shit they just mean in comparison to the original, they're really just trying to say that the original sprites are good

Wtf, complete mod when

Is there a full voice patch for Higurashi? My google skills are only turning up partial.

Okay, but what about the sprites and backgrounds? Do you seriously think Ryukishi decided to do them the way he did as an artistic choice? In all likelihood, he probably did it because he couldn't afford to hire professional artists. I'll bet he was thrilled when the PS3 version was released. Imagine seeing something that started as a passion project you scraped together with what you could get your hands on, getting turned into something with so much effort and polish put into it by so many skilled professionals who saw value in remaking it.

>Imagine seeing something that started as a passion project you scraped together with what you could get your hands on,
This right here is the most important part. It came from him and from his passion. He did whatever he could with the little he had. It's unironically soulful

I don't dislike the PS3 sprites but for this alone I'll prefer the originals. It's that simple

You are way too old for that now. You had a chance before the Rokkenjima incident but you fucked up hard you retard

I've never doubted that the original sprites are good. Sure they're lacking in technical skill, but it's no different from stuff like ZUN or ONE, having the same sort of crude charm and originality. Nevertheless, I still greatly prefer the PS3 art.

Do you think the artists at alchemist didn't put their heart and soul into making the updated graphics? Anyone who's ever compared the game files of the two versions can instantly see that Alchemist was doing way more than what was required of them, even getting to the point where they could no longer break even and went bankrupt.

Attached: mar_a35_.png (549x1008, 390K)

>Do you think the artists at alchemist didn't put their heart and soul into making the updated graphics?
Not at all. But I value more the things coming from the author than content coming from an adaptation. And yeah, it's sad that they went bankrupt.

>Gohda x Gumshoe
Based and salarypilled. Perhaps Rayfa in Erika would be fitting

Haha, that'd take a while. For now, I think I'll stick to the goal of trying to do a single sprite for each character. Plus I've also got other edits to work on like the OP ones. Also here's the .png version.

Attached: Ange merge experiment 2.png (734x1120, 584K)

Oh, there's an idea. I was wondering who would fit Erika. By all means, feel free to offer any suggestions. As I said, it's still only in the brainstorming phase.

On a scale of 1-10, how much did you enjoy Umineko, and then on a scale of 1-10 how much do you predict you'll enjoy Ciconia?
Umineko was like a 9.5 or something for me, I absolutely loved it. I kind of feel like there's no way Ciconia could be better, but I also felt that exact same way about Umineko after reading Higurashi. I think Ciconia is minimum going to be like an 8.5 or somthing, I have complete faith that this will be something I'll really enjoy. I don't really want to get my hopes up though, I think it's better to just go in expecting whatever and see what happens so maybe I should start being more pessimistic.

Maybe... Just maybe have Gaap or even better Featherine with Justine Courtney's color palette?

Attached: Justine.gif (136x184, 9K)

Is this really that good? I have a friend who likes it and tried to get me to read it. She makes it sound like the most complicated story ever. Are you really expected to read a 100 hour vn multiple times to get it?

>Are you really expected to read a 100 hour vn multiple times to get it?
no, but rereading it could make you appreciate it more, you're totally fine to play it once and then ask questions about parts you didn't get

I'd rate Higurashi 8/10 (since I already knew most it not all of the story thanks to the anime...) and Umineko 9/10 for the enjoyment factor. However, I'm not feeling that good about Kikonia since it was said that the formula will not be the same as the previous When They Cry novels. I loved both Higurashi and Umineko since I'm a big fan of the mystery genre, and I'm afraid that Ciconia will stray away from it.

Attached: u.jpg (600x600, 145K)

It's not that you're expected to, it's that the story has a way of sticking with you after you finish it, drawing you back in years later. And every time you dive back in, you discover new things you hadn't noticded initially.

I expect it to be at least RGD tier, but I'm skeptical as to whether it can capture the magic Higurashi and Umineko had.

I'd be more worried about Kuckonia because Ryukishi hasn't written anything good in years. And don't tell me X was good because it wasn't. Even Chiru wasn't good, only Higurashi and Umineko 1-4.
