I'm working on a GarfieldRPG and have gotten the main-systems down, but am still struggling with coming up with a good battle system. My main inspiration before i started development, was Undertale & Deltarune, because it's simply bullethell mechanic every time enemies had their turn, made battles much more entertaining, than just ticking your hp down, and clicking buttons.
The dilemma is, it would probably be a bad idea to just rip em off. I got a few suggestions earlier that might be worth looking into
>Bullet-(eating)-hell where you collect pellets instead of dodging them (It fits with Garfield, and is unique on paper, but there isn't as much possibility of tailoring the attacks to the enemies casting dem)
>Wario-ware/Rythm Heaven, style mini-games (Was my initial idea, and sounds alright, but i fear it'd get annoying needing to learn a new mini-game every 10 seconds + the time i'd for me to make 100s of minigames)
>Rhythm based (A kind of DDR, or maybe Parappa the Rapper, could be really fun if executed well. But timing with music, will be hard, since it's turn based, unless i find out some music syncing tricks, or drop the turn-based aspect)
Shoot me your thoughts on these ideas, or come with others. Please be as descriptive as possible! Help make this game good! (I did a another thread asking the same a few days ago, and got good input. But i'd like to hear more ideas)
Here's the rough story, before someone asks: >Garfield is living out his everyday life being a bigger asshole than anyone wants to deal with
>and in a fit of irony, his bullshit ends up accidentally getting his best teddybear Pookie destroyed.
>Garfield is now emotionally destroyed, but that's when Nermal shows up.
>he says to Garfield. "I can help you, but you gotta admit that i'm the cutest kitty-cat!"
>Garfield reluctantly agrees to the terms, and "admits he's the cutest, most punchable, kitty-cat"
>and Nermal opens up a portal to purgatory for them to use.
>now Garfield Nermal, and Odie, travels through purgatory, battling lost souls, dead people and characters, and monsters, on their way to find Pookie and retrieve him from the dead!
Do a classical turn-based RPG system, but make sure to make it have some depth. Plenty of numbers and strategies for the player to tinker with, otherwise it gets very stale.
Give it a listen, it's that chaotic fun feeling i'm aiming for.
Also this is some old "concept-art" i made of the battle-system, the idea i went for there, was wario-ware mini-games, but it could be anything inside the boundaries of the box really
>wario-ware mini-games If you're taking that route your mini games should be even shorter than in WW. No one wants another YIIK shitshow.
Jaxon Anderson
That would make the problem, of needing to re-learn a new game every 10 seconds even worse.
So i should probably just scrap that idea.
I'm learning towards the rhythm based one. But it'd be a problem syncing a turn-based game with music, so ya'll shoot your ideas on that

Some sort of Gluttony system might work. What you eat could be important in battle, with different meals having different effects. I've always felt the "Items" option in RPGs is very rarely explored or built upon.
Asher Robinson
Why the fuck are you doing this? You do realize this whole post-ironic Garfield meme is going to become super dated, right?
Jackson Smith
I like Garfield unironically. Bitch somewhere else
Jaxon Morales
Have Mario & Luigi style combat. Rhythm, items, & team up moves. I.e. Garfield and Odie would team up and you have to time the kick perfectly to kick Odie at the enemy.
Aaron Morales
Why not? Sounds cool to me
Cooper Jones
DISREGARD THAT I SUCKS COCKS
Luis Thompson
you motherfucker
Henry Wright
Damn, this is some Chris-Chan/Ulillillia-tier shit. Shine on, you autistic diamond.
Carson Adams
If Chris-chan could make a video-game i'd play the shit out of it. I appreciate it nonetheless
Joseph Gutierrez
For your narrative, have you considered taking inspiration from the canon book and story "Garfield: His 9 Lives"? Shit's kino Garfield lore.
Cooper Kelly
i've bookmarked it, but have yet to watch it. Might do that tonight
Logan Rogers
How long do you want battles to last? Gameplay aside, what would Garlfield even do to defeat his enemies?
Nathan Sullivan
Nobody wants a fucking rhythm game
Noah Wright
I would remove swearing from the game.
Jack Stewart
You could have the battle type vary from boss to boss and just have a bullet hell for common enemys. For example say you're fighting a groovy john in love with disco you have to play ddr to win. I think thats the key to having something memorable you shmuck.
Is there anywhere we can look for updates regularly? Very interested
Henry Fisher
I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna say it. Do you have a twitter or some way for me to follow development besides just hoping to randomly find your next post on Yea Forums?
Hunter Ross
i update on twitter @stann_co but i post a lot of fluff too.
