About to start this, since it's got sucha a good rep around here.
What difficulty would you guys propose for the first time?
Should I toggle some survival mode options?

Do nightmare without survival options for your first run for a decent challenge
You should refund the game; it's just a System Shock 2 clone with shadows-like enemies.
Never play a game based on its reputation on Yea Forums.
you say that like it is a bad thing
It is. OP is playing a type of game that people didn't like and that he may not like, based on "Yea Forums rep".
OP, trust me on this one. If you bought Prey, refund it. If you pirated it, uninstall and delete it.
but prey is a fun game
OP should buy a second copy for a friend who pirated it to support the developers
MIght give it a shot then
I picked it up primerly because I like those sort of games and it looked good for me.
The v rep was a side guideline, and it paid off for me in the past. Especially with Pathologic which is adored around here and I really loved it too.
just a heads up
nightmare can be pretty dumb early on by making some enemies really bullet spongey which when combined with limited ammo means no fun
Sometimes Yea Forums is wrong.
Prey is one of those times.
I warned you, OP. You're about to waste your time with a shit game.
Preys great, don't listen to seething niggers who hate it because its not Prey 2.
It's such an awful, uninspired game. Save your time and play something else.
you are pathetic my dude
need to get myself the art book
Hardest or second hardest with all survival options enabled.
Also get the fuck out of here or get spoiled.
Also Prey threads attract some seriously autistic individuals that post in extremely obvious ways and are hell bent on shitposting this game.
Also goty whichever year it came out.
That is all.
samefag
Bump up the difficulty by 1 and disable the guidance. Talos 1 is not hard to navigate with a bit of observation, and it adds to the experience.
Prey has real fucking good map design, you will definitely notice
another faggot that hate it just because it is not literally "Prey 2"
Wrong. But I'm glad that someone else is able to see past Yea Forums's baseless infatuation over that game.
Well, OP. Who will you trust? Blind fanboys or people who denounce that game for what it is?
Don't misunderstand me.
I'm not saying you should follow blindly what v tells you. They can be wrong. But if the game looks fun to you and you do decent background check on it, usually it'll turn out fine.
I mean, from what we got from Prey 2 early footage it looked sick as fuck, but still new Prey looks like good time to me, no matter the namesake.
from someone who only recently completed system shock and system shock 2, after playing prey in 2017, i can say without a doubt that the experience has made me love prey even more. got i need prey 2 in my life, i hope arkane announce something at e3
fuck dude im playing this atm for the first time. go hard difficulty and enable all survival mode options
If you're good at the FPS genre, go for Hard your first time around.
>“Your wits are the only thing that will keep you alive.”
Ends up being pretty accurate, and fights will often force you to use unorthodox tactics or the environment if you're creative enough
play it the way you would play most arkane games i.e. disable as many ui elements are possible to the bare minimum and bind use to right click, in true dark engine style
Gonna trust my own gut feeling, and stick in with the game. Got some really good vibes from it.
>3/4
>wrong
Yeah good job m8. You seem very trustworthy and not autistic at all with the way you're euphorically standing against the tides of people who liked the thing you didn't.
>OP is playing a type of game that people didn't like
>people didn't like
Weasel words, citation needed... fag.
Also, OP, remember that you can use glue gun shots on the walls to jump your way up to vents and other high places. Sneak attacks with the pistol will usually destroy most mimics. The Boltcaster can be used to activate some security pads at a distance.
Oh, and if you end up needing a lot of metal for bullets but can't find enough metals to recycle you can learn to dismantle weapons and salvage Spare Parts from Operators. It's generally better to recycle spare weapons directly for their resources, BUT the Huntress Bowcaster is .75 synthetics while dismantling it into a Spare Part for later Recycling yields .3 synthetics and .3 METAL. Synthetics seemed REALLY easy to come in my games by while metals are used in basically everything important.
i'm really happy that people do play ss1 despite its aged graphically (imo art design still holds) and really clunky inventory. such a good game. i liked ss2 more because its a bit darker and scary, and goddam stephen russell. playing prey now and its been a real fucking blast, so so good. one thing i miss tho is the respawn mechanic of the enemies, and a vitachamber or something, even if it would cost resources because now its just quicksave to experiment
shit, i guess i gotta take dismantle I
Enemy design is downright awful. Good ideas and a solid base but damn near everything you'll fight is just "black goo", with a turret or dude thrown in for giggles. Very good level design, terrible weapon variety, decent skill system hampered by objectively good and bad choices. If you got it for less than 15 USD it's okay. Definitely not worth more than that. Hope that if they are given a chance at a sequel they can improve upon the flaws. There's potential, as there was with Dishonored, but they fuck up so badly with so many things that their games become bargain bin items at record speed.
Nightmare. Anything below that is gaming journalist -tier in difficulty. Even nightmare becomes piss easy 10 or so hours into the game.
>Enemy design is downright awful.
its not bad, there is plenty of variety with the enemy attacks
i must be misremembering because i thought some enemies did respawn. or it might just be that when the game asks you to backtrack to a certain area it reintroduces enemies there. the mimics are some of my favourite enemies in gaming so having them respawn in certain areas to keep the player on their toes would've been good.
its not a respawn like in system shock, but rather when you progress in story, some areas become repopulated, so even if you spend 10 hours in one area, there wont be respawns, unlike in ss
I should clarify. The design mechanically is sound, bordering on pretty good for what it is. The design visually, however, is bad. Really bad. The mimics are good, as are one other enemy, but the rest are just more of that but bigger. It would have been nice to see a bit more variety, if only art wise. But I say this as a System Shock fan, so perhaps i'm just old.
i quite like that approach to enemies because gothic did something similar
nah i get what you are saying, valid point
>Enemy design is downright awful.
Nah that's extreme. The typhon are pretty basic in design but the actual visual effects that accompnay them are very well made and conceptually consistent throughout.
Also terrible weapon variety? Really? What more do you want? Just because not all of your weapons are guns or even actual weapons doesn't mean that it lacks variety. If anything that's where the game excels I'd say.
>Enemy design is downright awful
Honestly, my greatest, and perhaps only disappointment in playing this game was that I was not fighting SHODAN and her army of mutants, cyborgs, and robots.
Hell, I'd probably cut off one of my fingers to get a System Shock 1 rebuild with a reactive AI director playing SHODAN, remixing a series of apocalyptic schemes, ambushes, and station states to result in some real 'panting and sweating' action. Preys: Moonshot DLC showed some interesting promise, but I felt like the increasing 'difficulty/corruption' could not keep up with the player's gradual meta advancement for me.
The laser sword is dope tho.

i like that the weapons, even if there are no rocket launcher or assault rifle, fit in the station setting.
Exactly. That part of the consistency of the designs that I mentioned. Everything just makes sense and practicality is the highest priority.
It's what separates good sci fi from bad sci fi imo.
As I said above, it's more the visuals of black blob, bigger blacker blob, bigger black blob plus ultra, etc. that I dislike. outlines it quite well.
As far as weapons go I liked what was there, functionally, but I felt that there was a distinct lack of variety in regards to furthering my arsenal. If you recall, System Shock 1 and 2 had a pretty large selection of weapons for you to choose from. I simply like having more options, instead of finding that my win condition was explosive barrel of different flavours and big beefy arms.
Not just practical, the weapons are the most differentiated I've seen. No weapon can really substitute for any other at all and they each can be super useful to have around. It's pretty great design desu although it means you feel compelled to lug them all around.
What a faggot.
Prey was good, however it does become too easy near the second half
My only complaint about the game is towards the end theres a lot of backtracking and running through areas, and the loading times are a kick in the dick.
I really need to get around to finishing the game, I enjoyed the fuck out of the atmosphere and story
If anything can be said about the enemy design its that they're mostly visually uninteresting. The lore behind them is top notch though. They should have toned back the "amorphous black blob" look for some of the other enemies like the phantoms. That look works with the mimics, but not really anything else. Still, the typhon themselves are very interesting to play against.
>OP is playing a type of game that people didn't like
Speak for yourself you fucking ultra faggot. Immersive sims are top tier.
I mean SS2 had more weapons but in a single playthrough you had to spec into one of the 3 or 4 types and then use those 3 or 4 weapons that were almost identical functionally.
Play on Hard and all Survival active
>not posting the second best track in the game
>its only second because Everything is going to be OK is undeniably first

Why don't you go fuck yourself
Just ignore him. Autists like that thrive on attention.
turn the music off. it ruins the atmosphere and sounds like shit. I recommend doing this for other immersive sim style games too but Prey and System shock in particular have bad soundtracks.
lol no way fag
It's one of the best games of the generation. The fact that it wasn't a mindless shooter like the first prey doesn't make it bad.
Prey has some of the most interesting level design I've seen ever since OG Deus Ex. The story is alright, but the level design(combined with how creative you can be with some weapons) makes the whole thing a ton of fun even if you don't use alien powers.
personally one of my favourite things was the looking glass tech (great fucking tribute to one of the best game studios of all time). seeing the gears and smoke and mirrors behind the opening sequence once the game starts properly was amazing.
