It is a risk when you do that with an already established franchise that already has its own formula. I can think of many games that new GOW was inspired by with their individual elements, but I can't think of a single one that shares GOW's actual combat. Particularly the Dark Souls style 3D melee combat (but with no-lock on) controlled with the Gears of War style movement control scheme. Also the boomerang axe is pretty unique

Sony wants their fans all nice and ready for the GoW Remaster on PS5 followed by GoW 2. GoW is a single player experience with no multiplayer elements or microtransactions/live-service features which makes it much harder to keep the money and interest flowing endlessly but they need to keep interest in the franchise alive until the next installment. And given their new plan of less games over time expect to see shit like this for every single release they do from now on.

You just don't know how to use the axe. It absolutely tears shit up even on GMGOW if you use the stance-switch throws, the cleaves and shit like the dodge-backwards boomerang attack. The stance switch moves are like a chainsaw of death if you can catch enemies inside it (including the R1 versions). Also those enchantments that make the axe charge up and explode to electricity after you throw a headshot with it really help.
One of the most damaging little fast combos you can do is the simple double-chop to cleave like this webm, R2-R2-> hold-R2
