Steam: The New Normal of Low Sales

youtube.com/watch?v=WycVOCbeKqQ

OH NO NO NO NO NO

Some choice quotes
>Being on Steam means nothing now
>You can't rely on just Steam to sell your game
>There are games on Steam that have sold 0 copies

How will Steam drones live in denial about this?

Here's the game they're complaining isn't selling because of Steam.

this guy sounds like a faggot and his shits all retarded

no wonder he had worked for kotaku

That game is based doe

That's just the PC market in general right now, have you seen how indieshit from pc sells in switch?
Normal people rather play in actual gaming platforms

>#NintendoSwitch community is a blessing! #BlossomTales is now a turnaround story: Humble indie dev @castlepixel can stay in business and continue making games. Love y’all! 3 months #Switch revenues surpass #Steam lifetime revenues 20 times!

>switch
>actual gaming platform

Do we need to keep having this thread? You fuckers don't even watch the presentation.

Yes

If you fags actually watch the talk, then you'll see that all it's saying is just getting on Steam != free money anymore. Your game has to be marketed as if it were on any other platform now. The only advantage to Steam anymore is being more convenient to download and update compared to buying directly on the dev website.

>switch has no games
>people will buy anything half decent on it
Even I bought hollow knight on the switch again just so I could have something to play
And likely going to rebuy persona as well.

Am I supposed to care?
Go sell your game somewhere else if you want, lol, but I'm keeping steam since my controllers work better with it and it's easy to find stuff in the hubs.

Maybe he should have tried to advertise his fucking game in some way? This is literally the first time I heard of this shit. You can´t rely on Valve to sell your stuff for you. Go to PAX, actually mpress people with your shit. I got to know a ton of indies because some YT-fag made me aware of them

nintendobabs need to be hanged, how many times you guys claimed that "switch will save it" to whatever indie shit yet it sold like garbage, best example of this is valkyria chronicles 4
and many lower budget titles sell more on ps4 in NINTENDOLAND

YES, once a indie title released initially on PC only, gained some attraction and popularity will sell at a faster rate on consoles, its not a fucking riddle

Yes, that's his point, you need to advertise to sell, it's not a blue ocean anymore.

the problem is that Steam doesn't show people the games they might want to buy, it just spams them with triple A and Asian F2Pshit. the issue is game discovery and this is where Steam fails. My discovery queue is a joke. Steam knows exactly what I play but keeps recommending me '''strategy''' games like CS.

this game would not have made it on steam before the greenlight days, it looks like fucking trash

>Deep dive
>lmao lets just use averaged statistics to skew the data
If we did the same thing to the movie industry we could imply that Marvel movies only make a few million because an ass ton of independent movies, straight to dvd movies, and tv movies make very little and weigh down the averages drastically because they're shat out at high speed.

Maybe it is because it isn't a game and it would be a better use of your money to just watch someone stream it?

>a literal zelda rip off
lol

Basically this. The median is low because every shit head can get their game on the platform right now. Competing amongst decent games is still the same.

>average amount of money a game makes increased by $7740 in one year, even though steam has thousands of more shit games that sell 0 copies
Can you at least edit the image so your bait is more palatable?

>Allow any game on steam even if it wouldn't sell
>WOW THE AVERAGE IN SALES DROPPED

Attached: 1555715756704.jpg (233x263, 10K)

See: OP is just shitposting and not providing actual context

>steam allows pretty much everybody onto steam
>including you
>your game is no different than the literally 100s of games added every day
>your game doesnt stand out and you do nothing to advertise it besides telling your circlejerk buddies on reddit or whatever shitty forum of choice you use
>sells like shit
>this is somehow valve's fault for not advertising YOUR game specifically in a sea of other guys demanding they do the same for them
What is Valve supposed to do, here? If they change the rules so nobody can get in, then these idiots wont get in either. There is no way they can possibly advertise every shitty indie game at the same time. So what the fuck are they supposed to do? This is like some guy screaming at the local flea market because nobody came to his stall. I'm really fucking tired of these fucks getting to push this narrative that they are victims of the same system that every other business manages to work with just fine.

>You can't rely on just Steam to sell your game

No fucking shit. For years and years it was really fucking hard to get on Steam, getting in there required extensive tests and certificates, connections, an exorbitant amount of money and influence or sometimes all three to get shit published there, since there was a lot less competition anything that managed to get past Steam's board in the pre-Greenlight days managed to sell a few copies just by showing on the store front, but that's not how 99% of markets work, most store fronts will just stock whatever sells regardless of quality unless it's illegal and if you want your shit to be the shit that's bought you have to advertise and make a superior product, which is what Steam is doing nowadays. Do you think they would keep allowing the flood of low quality Chinese games and porn if they weren't getting a reasonable slice of profit from it? Want to compete there? Make a fucking good game and market it good, it ain't Steam's fucking job to sell your shit, devs shouldn't be so entitled. And don't count on Papa Epic to save your ass either, Epic wants to seem professional and filled with "quality games" so it will ever only have 5-10% of the games that are on Steam at best, and shit like Hypnospace Outlaw will never fly there unless they open the floodgates like Steam, which will lead to the same conclusion: Market your fucking game.

> Make shit game.
> Pay for it to get on steam.
> Nobody buys it.
Wow, what about free money?

Have you tried going through your discovery queue a few times, clicking the ignore button on shit you dislike and then following a few curators? Cause that's all I did and Steam constantly recommends me shit it knows I'm going to like. Oh and also build up your wishlist, it recommends games based on that as well.

Attached: 1385493180153.jpg (640x480, 49K)

I really like this game. That said its beyond niche. Its a 90s nightmare internet culture adventure/puzzle game reminiscent of all the old lucas arts shit just from a different perspective.
that and it has zero advertisement.
something awful retard devs as usual

About as valid an argument as Sean Murray screaming there were so many people playing NMS

>YOU SHOULD ALL STOP USING STEAM BECAUSE I SAID IT'S GOING TO GET BAD

What's with all the trademarks?

These retards literally cried that valve was killing indie devs by not allowing them onto steam. Curation bad.
Then they cried that greenlight was being exploited and once again killing true and honest indie devs. Curation too much.
Now everybody can pay a 100 dollar fee to put their game onto steam and once again valve is now guilty of killing indie devs because no curation.

These goldilocks retards will never be pleased. Steam gave you absolute equality, it turns out your game needs to be good or you need to advertise well instead of letting steam do that for you.

Good game but the only reason I know it is because I stumbled upon a RPS article about it.

He isn't telling anyone to stop using Steam.

>average
>Uses median value (the number in the middle rather than an actual average such as mean) as the notable number

Cause smaller number means worse means it furthers his personal goal of "STEAM ID DYIN!"

>selling your game on a platform with competition
vs
>selling your game on a platform with no competition
WOW I WONDER WHY IT SELLS BETTER ON SWITCH
Of course selling on PC is always going to be a risk, it has nothing to do with Steam but with the fact that you're competing with 30+ years of games being played on the platform.
PC is for players, consoles are for consumers.

459246119
LOOK MOM I POSTED IT AGAIN

Averages don't say anything when the distribution is skewed. Why would he highlight the average?

tbf the mean could be highly skewed thanks to AAA games if they put those in the calculations

Dunno. Just pointing out that he says:
>the average game on Steam
>Then lists MEDIAN values posing them as averages and then disclosing that they aren't in green

>WE NEED LESS BARRIERS TO GET OUR GAMES ON STEAM
>ok, let's open the floodgates with community voting
>IT'S WAY TOO HARD TO GET ENOUGH VOTES! ONLY THOSE WITH BIG COMMUNITIES CAN GET IN!!
>ok, 100 dollar entry fee to keep the joke submissions at bay
>NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD 100 AMERICAN DOLLARS!!!1
>ok, it's free now
>WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GAMES ON STEAM?! I CAN'T GET ANYONE TO BUY MY GAME BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW IT EXISTS
>....

"Average" is just a colloquialism for a normal steam game.

yeah but I often stumble upon games that have gone completely under my radar. And I realize most of these games that don't sell are shit, but among those thousands of indie games there are some that I'd love to play but won't even know about until grassroots marketing takes off.

Google play store has the same cancer, it's just more advanced.

Nah it's shit no matter what I do

Stop posting that shit image and post based boomer dev.

>Says it's okay that he was harassed because he's a white male who "doesn't get it as bad as others"

This guy is a fucking cuck, fuck off

We don't deserve Jeff

>There are games on Steam that have sold 0 copies
That's not the fault of Steam. That's the fault of bad marketing. You need to create at least a small following before launching your game.

Steam has tens of thousands of games on it, most of which are green light cancer that doesn't sell because it's bad. The remainder are AAA and other titles going back thirty years often times so not everything sells a lot. Understand that not the point but just trying to make it clear for epic games trannies.

this will happen to epic too in a few years when they open their doors (if they're even still around)
what will they do then ?
shit out another shitty platform and do it all over ?
game devs are fucking retarded
make good games and they'll sell, doesnt matter where you place em
that's too difficult i guess, better complain about useless stats

>Got work to do
>Someone is shitposting on the forum
>I can waste my time and discuss the issue with him
>or
>I can block/ban him and continue to work on my game

Ah, yes, it always suck shit when you find out Steam has been actively hidding a hidden gem from you because it thinks you're not interested, but I'm honestly not sure how to improve the algorythm. It already recommends games based on series, publishers, genres and tags that you like/bought + curators refining the entire process. Maybe it's the meme tags that are fucking up the system, there are a lot of people who tag and review games as a joke after all, but I don't think it would influence it much.

Maybe you just have niche taste and recommending a game from a certain genre to you won't necessarily mean you will like it since what you actually like in a game is so niche and small it's impossible to build an accurate metric out of.

Yes, that's his point, did you watch the video?

No.

Epic botting Yea Forums again making the board nigh unusable.

well maybe if you created the thread acknowledging that instead of designing the original post in the most clickbait manner of way where it makes it seem like a completely different implication, then this wouldn't be an issue

Yes, goy! 60€ is not enough to pay for a game! (It is)

Personally I never had problem with the recommendation system, always get at least one or two niche games, I guess is based on what you have in your library, whishlist, favorites, devs, curators and last games you played.

Why don't indies make their own fucking store if they are so butthurt about Steam? I can't be assed to keep up with all of them. They refuse to market their games, and then complain when we don't buy them. Why should I take time out of my day to periodically research indie games and buy lots of them on regular basis?

>Why don't indies make their own fucking store if they are so butthurt about Steam?

They did and it was awful

Imagine actually wanting to go back to the time where you needed both nepotism AND needed to the stars to align to get your indie game on Steam.
These fags probably think they would get in no problem because they are god's gift to indie gaming.

Doesn't itch.io have lots of shitty lesbian and gay porn games?

Does he even realize that his latest game looks exactly like 'hot stinking garbage' on first and second look?

just filter everything he posts, hashes and filenames
also recommend filtering ''steam drone''

>Being on Steam means nothing now
I means you paid a measly $100 to get your game listed, hosted and payment processed all around the world. HOW THE FUCK CAN ANY OTHER GAME STORE COMPETE WITH THAT? Seriously takes an Epic Shill to try to spin this in a negative way.

>No More Robots is the brainchild of Mike Rose, the industry veteran who previously took publisher tinyBuild to great heights with titles like Punch Club, Party Hard and Clustertruck. He originally made a name for himself as a video game critic for the likes of Gamasutra, Kotaku and PocketGamer.

This guy isn't even a dev.
He's just a washed out jurno that is taking credit for some mediocre games made by other people so he can shit on Steam.

>my own intuition
hard data

Those are brave and stunning and definitely not hot stinking garbage, user.

It was praised by most outlets and according to its twitter the sales numbers are agreeable. He's just saying there's a lot of shit in Steam.

Yeah this is the obvious sounding conclusion to the data he presents. Looking at average sales data being much lower doesn't mean anything, because a few years ago all of the games that sell 50 copies would never make it onto Steam in the first place.

It's more like a bunch of indie devs are being welcomed to the reality that their game actually just sucks.

JUST

Steam makes more money with big budget DLC mill games than with indies, it's that simple. And there is very little organic exposure for games these days. Indie twitter is a circle jerk that doesn't sell games. Youtube and Twitch show what you pay streamers to show.
If you can't pay big bucks for marketing you're basically stuck with small niches where mouth to mouth still works.

That is why Jeff said word of mouth was important for his games, they are too niche for streamers or youtubers, only a bunch of big dorks play his game, you can make money on niche game, but it's going to be enough money to keep a 3+ team living in San Diego or any other expensive location.
If you are small, act small, don't try to emulate AAA or AA devs, do what you can do.

>wtf my effortless pixelshit indie bootleg doesn't sell now???
About fucking time too. Industry killing pricks, no better than AAA movieshit.

I never heard of any of these games. Goddamn trustfund babies.

Being on Steam used to be a mark of quality because Valve themselves took the time and effort to vet a game. Valve's efforts to automate this away and let the community to the heavy lifting has been a mess. App Stores in general aren't much better letting nearly anyone with a license publish.

There is a market for curated digital stores, but what would it take to make the customers happy and stay profitable? Tencent wearing Epic's skin hasn't gone over well with anyone. A lot of people in the PC world don't like digital game stores in general; Steam didn't gain traction until the PC world made Gabe promise to un-Steam all the games should Valve die.

Attached: 1418094585804.jpg (535x462, 34K)

you don't know what the fuck you're talking about zoomer. Go back to school.

>Being on Steam used to be a mark of quality because Valve themselves took the time and effort to vet a game.

Steam drones aren't old enough to remember that

Fuck that bitch, make good games and they will sell. You aren't entitled to shit even if you slaved for years on your special unique snowflake of a game.

Of course, and these people did that to themselves. They begged Valve to let them in and to cut the bullshit with Valve vetting them in with a slow trinkle and the greenlight program. They got exactly what they ask for, but they forgot the fact that there were thousands of other developers they had to compete with. They are now fighting amongst each other. They never once thought how their demands would affect the market, just themselves.

It has games, you just have shit taste. There's plenty to play.

he did advertise it, it saw press and such. However there's definitely a llimit to the returns of what's practical.

it's actually fantastic tho

Catch-22 as seen here There's literally nothing Valve can do that will appease these people. Epic is still to tiny a market for them to bother complaining about it, and honestly, I think this is just them buttering up people to get into a new more curated market (IE: EpicGames) and hoping that new market accepts them with it.

oh my god I love their games and I haven't watched it yet, was he really being a faggot here, please say it ain't so

This is how games and the game industry dies. By actually listening to the playerbase.

it's good to know that there are 'people' still on Yea Forums that don't know anything about what they're talking about and still voice their opinion.

nobody worth their salt complained about greenlight. What a stupid argument.

The average game is utter trash and shouldn't be getting any sales at all in the first place.
