>How long until you switch to Linux?
I'm already running GNU/Linux for gaming.
As soon as I can run all my games on Linux with the same performance as windows. Literally everything else about Linux is better
Probably when I buy some new hardware and it stops giving me problems on win8.1. Until then I'm fine.
I did try linux though and it worked just fine for my needs, except for being worse for games.
switched 9 years ago, works wonderfully for everything i do.
Depending on your hardware and what games we're talking about odds are we're there, or a lot closer than you might think.
Its really a fairly small number of multiplayer games that ship with 'anti-cheat' malware that don't work now.
How are the frametime/framerate in games compared to windows? Is there munch of a difference in terms of smoothness?
while it depends on the game, proton from Steam really has made a lot of games run at windows native speeds. older games don't have a noticeable difference at all
>How long until you switch to Linux?
When windows and mac dies
When playing Windows games the first time (or after a driver update) there's often more dips initially as the shaders are translated to standard SPIR-V. Once they're cached though the framerates tend to be pretty consistent. In some cases the performance is better than Windows.
For games that are already using Vulkan, or OpenGL the framerates can be as high or higher than Windows, especially if you have an AMD card.
Well MacOS is pretty much already dead since they haven't updated OpenGL in years, and are dead last when it comes to driver performance.
Windows on the other hand has its death day set at Jan 14 2020.
So it might be time to start thinking about your options.
Already did, but I dual-boot for some things and it's easier to get torrents for Windows.
Any good place to get Linux torrents, aside from that Russian place?
ha ha those padded feet are really cute don't you think guys ha ha
ha ha do you think it ever lays an egg i wonder that they smell like ha ha
If anyone here is actually on linux right now and has 15 minutes to spare, please try running Gruntz (1999) on proton or wine or whatever. It's abandonware. See if you can get normal framerates, because modern windows dips into single digits even when I do get it to run.
I already use linux. I just haven't tried to play games on it.
I'm very picky about what I play so even a few if those games not working would be a big deal to me.
I'd rather slave away trying to virtualize windows then make games work on linux.
Back when it came out it apparently ran pretty well with Wine, but after a quick search I can't find anyone who has run it recently.
I might do it when W7 dies
Sometimes i think about it, but i still not sure i can run LoL fine with proton/wine.
I see torrents for the linux versions of games, so it must be getting more popular.
Any experience with the patching of games?
Does the linux version lag behind or is it synced?
Depends on the game. Some devs are really good at keeping in lock step. The ones where the game was ported by an external group like Civilization for instance the big updates can lag since they may not have access to port until it was released.
Tux is a male penguin so he does not lay eggs and only poops freedom.
>Playing games on an OS designed for servers
linux is designed for so many things, the fact that you even said that proves you know fuck all about it.
>designed for servers
I just do not get where you get this ridiculous idea. Linux was created for the sole purpose of being a home PC OS because there wasn't one that wasn't either incredibly outdated or absolute shit.
What distro can a non-experienced user do with?
I've used a bit of Ubuntu in the past, but remember almost nothing.
stick with ubuntu, or mint. it's okay to use them. I've been using linux for ~9 years and while i use more advanced distributions, i still use ubuntu exclusively on my laptop.
>2020
Try 2100, Microsoft won't let it die that easy
For beginners it's important to simply pick a popular one because more populated forums = more answers to any problems you may have.
Ubuntu is a good starter's choice, though maybe pick one of the alternative flavors because Gnome is shit.
>OS designed for servers
It's incredibly flexible. You can go so far as to replace the kernel schedular and run it on just about anything. The fact that it's commonly run on servers isn't implicit of being bad for everything else. Also you seem to forget that the most common use of Linux these days is in Android, and on mobile devices efficiency is a huge deal since it translates into battery life.
I chose debian with kde
If you get through installation, Arch actually has a really thorough wiki and forum for whatever you need.

When shit "just werkz" on 75% of the same shit that Windows does and issues aren't resolved through the awful terminal, then I will try again. Until then, I have no need to have an OS to feel like a special snowflake due to ricing.
But user, TF2 is native. It doesn't even use Proton.
Seems fine on 640x480. On larger resolutions I ran into this issue bugs.winehq.org
The workaround fixed it but caused some other visual bugs like cursor leaving trails while reading books.
When I can run Jap MMORPGs on there
Thanks a lot man.

I actually switched my laptop from Win7 to Kubuntu a few days ago, trying to dip my water into the environment.
It still doesn't "werkz" like it's supposed to and I can't be arsed to RTFM every damn time I wanna do anything like install a printer, use a keyboard/mouse that Linux doesn't support, and so on. This thread alone shows how much trouble people go through and I honestly don't have time to deal with that shit. My ricing autism is for Quake mods
>get Yea Forums into linux

according to plan (translators note: plan is english for plan)
>install printer

user, my windows 7 machine had to install drivers for a Microsoft keyboard. My linux laptop takes my quadrillion button gaming mouse and jest werkz with no non-kernel drivers needed, at all. same with printing.
>according to plan (translators note: plan is english for plan)
Is there a wordfilter here or are you just having a giggle?

Good one, user.
>How long until you switch to Linux?
never
i want to switch to linux and i have good enough experience using it too but all distros drain battery like a champ, i have heard of few software to fix these things but i assume they will impact performance of pc
I didn't remember the original line because I haven't watched deathnote in a decade. So I just changed it.
i'm using a logitech G110 keyboard and a logitech g502 mouse, both work fine. i'm not familiar with your printer, obviously, but we have a shitty $30 one that works fine too.
I've been interested in free software lately but I have no idea about computers in general. I used to run Ubuntu back in highschool and I can't remember any problems at all, so what is wrong with gaming in Linux?
historically GPU drivers have been sub-par for linux thanks to Nvidia 1) not developing their drivers for linux and 2) MS pushing directX while also keeping it windows only. however, AMD and open source drivers such as vulkan have gotten really good.
This, combined with Steam recently releasing Photon for linux, and more games being made in unity which is platform agnostic, has led to more games being playable on linux systems.
Not all games are there on Linux, just like not all games are on Mac.
You need to use software like Wine or Proton to support Windows games, not all games will work properly, and some might have game-breaking issues.
not him but I do appreciate that you took time and tested it. World needs more people like you
And how much shit did you do to get it running?
Switched half a year ago when Windows 10 didn't want to install, but Ubuntu 18.04 did.
The current versions around DXVK, Wine and Proton compared to six months ago are miles better and load times of games are faster than when I used Windows.
DRM like Denuvo and anti-cheat software is in the way though.
I would probably give Linux on my desktop a spin, but I don't want to install a second GPU to passthrough my 1060 to a Windows VM for the small portion of bullshit Proton doesn't support yet.
I use Xubuntu on my laptops though.
>tfw fell for the novideo meme

all of about 3 seconds each, only because i didn't try to put the USB in the wrong way. I don't even remember what i had to do for the printer, but considering i've clean wiped the OS and reinstalled from scratch and can still use the printer, it can't have been much. what are you using?
Can you explain then how a dude who burgers praised as second coming of Jesus got completely humiliated by having server OS become more popular on phones than his amazing magical revolutionary OS?

but YOUR keyboard is HP, from what i can tell.
Is KDE still buggy as hell?
Depends on what you want to accomplish.
Ubuntu (and it's variants) are well documented and community supported which directly correlates with its popularity. If you just want to game you would install Steam and try out Proton. To save yourself the upfront time you can use ProtonDB, a website with compat ratings.
Ubuntu 18.04 (and variants) are longer supported versions with less frequent but more stable and usually security-focused updates as opposed to updating every 6 months on non-LTS.
Other distros like Arch/Manjaro/Fedora/Debian have their own ups and downs.
You can try what you want in a virtual machine inside your current OS right now with little effort.
not for a long time now
Actually even people who did not like KDE 4 are now saying that KDE 5 is all right
Personally I would recommend using Manjaro as it gives you access to the Arch Wiki and AUR.
>DRM like Denuvo and anti-cheat software is in the way though.
Kind of sucks that DRM, of course, is a thorn even on linux. I guess publishers want to protect sales... from linux users.
>Keyboard is HP
Sauce on that?
Switched about 6 months ago. I love it.
I'm actually disappointed. I love the Yea Forums wordfilters, and think we should have more just to shit people. It's like shitposting at the software level.
>Nvidia 1) not developing their drivers for linux
Wots all this then?
post desktop
I'm a tech illiterate and I don't like fucking with drivers and all the compatibility shit. Maybe I'll find the courage one day, Win7 still has several months to go.
>fucking with drivers
This is mostly a non-issue depending on the distro you go with. Some do it for you and some are a few clicks.
>compatibility shit
Depends on what you're doing.
Who cares, KDE3 is the best desktop and the Trinity project preserves it. Honesly I haven't even bothered to try KDE5 because I know it won't top 3.
You'll be disappointed. I keep things spartan. Empty space on the right is my TV, only fullscreened videos go there.

Here you go buddy.
Easiest way to find out is to try which you can with 99% of them running live off USB no install required.
Alright, fuck it, I'm backing up my stuff and jumping ship, there's nothing to keep me on Windows, really.
Who else has kino ass TUX RACER theme in their head constantly?
I really wouldn't consider KDE a good desktop for a beginner. It's really easy to change one setting that breaks everything. I'd recommend Ubuntu Budgie or even just plain Ubuntu over it.
Holy fuck I made a bunch of typos in that original post.
G402*.
I'd suggest using Xubuntu over Kubuntu. BUt that might just be personal preference.
radical move
keep in mind that there are many linuxfags who are willing to help you if you encounter any issues or if you fuck up something, so don't be afraid to ask them for assistance
>Ubuntu Budgie
Isn't this the least mature variant out of all of them?
As per
Budgie is just gnome remade for non-hipsters. Kind of like cinnamon, except prettier. It's not old or well established, but isn't as big of a project as KDE to begin with.
Least mature, sure but is still much more idiot-proof than KDE.
your software is out of date bruv :^)
Yeah, I don't really consider a higher version number as a critical feature I need. I'll update my drivers when I install a new distro or something doesn't work on what I got, whichever once in a half-decade occurance occurs first.
nice meme
xubuntu here, I think that people that just use their computer for basoc shit like writing docs, making powerpoints or shit should swotch over, like it's the same but more stable and free
What bothers me about KDE is that it comes with a shitton of "k-apps" which I rarely use and can't seem to remove without also removing something else.
Xfce is the best for any intermediate user because it doesn't come with any bloat.
A distro for a noob should come with bloat in case they need it because installing it may be too challenging.
Eventually noob has to learn but it's best when having to learn things is spread out.
also now, and was with some hands-on, competent gaming assuming the game in question isn't full of cancer

Now I am running rolling release Arch on KDE plasma. It is nice using the AUR and Nvidia driver setup being so easy. I wouldn't recommend Arch to anyone unfriendly with the command line though.
I finally bought a new SSD, so it's about time. Now I just need to decide between Debian and fedora.
Under this assumption you wouldn't be using Linux at all since that same thing happened with the Linux Kernel Organization.

It was just another nail in the coffin for me. I don't interact with the Linux foundation but I used to interact with the Debian team on IRC.
...
Who gives a toss about how insane the people are, it's the output that matters so you should've bloody well jumped ship on Debian when they started using systemd.
I could already make the jump, but I'm waiting until my W7 Ultimate becomes completely obsolete.
I will start dual-booting sometime in early 2020s though.
That's fair. I'd definitely feel more disappointed if I had a relationship with the team prior. I'm still gonna continue to use Debian though since I'd rather not use Ubuntu. Canonical is likely going to get bought by Microsoft at some point and I'm happy with how stable Debian is.
no u
you can still fuck around with a distro right now in a vm
putting it off is okay, but avoiding early adoption will bite anyone it can. learn some of the ropes now instead of when you're forced to.
even if it's a question as mundane as "why does gaming suck on linux?"
While that question seems to be a bit heated, it would be in contrast to "where was gaming on linux before and how has it been improving?"
>you can still fuck around with a distro right now in a vm
Sure, but why?
Also, I have already used some Mint and Zorin OS for several days in the past. I generally like what Leenux has developed into, and Steam's DXVK implementation is fucking amazing; tried it on KF2 and Nier Automata while I was overhauling my old PC, and both ran flawlessly.
>avoiding early adoption will bite anyone it can
The fuck?
If anything, making the jump now, when things are still evolving, would just be shooting yourself in the leg. Windows 7 works perfectly fine at the moment, and will probably do long into the mid 2020s at this pace, so I'll be sticking with that for now. When the time to swap the OS comes, I'm sure Proton and Vulkan stuff in general will be evolved beyond our current imaginations.
>learn some of its ropes now
those ropes ain't no rocket science, and I know how most of it works already. And it all will be way better and even easier in the future.
Then consider it general advice for people less familiar but keeping their OS options open.
Despite being an extreme, GPU passthrough to a Windows VM is also a consideration to make the jump earlier and cover most if not all of what Proton+DXVK/Lutris cannot.
>How long until you switch to Linux?
I already am on Linux.
just updated senpai
Are you using a Nvidia card? Because TF2 also stuttered for me on the Mesa drivers so I installed the Nvidia drivers and everything works perfect now.
When >Uplay and >Battle.net properly work
>Well MacOS is pretty much already dead since they haven't updated OpenGL in years, and are dead last when it comes to driver performance.
Yeah, that really sucks. I liked how macOS had the CLI functionality of a Linux system but with Adobe and other major proprietary software. macOS was basically Linux with photoshop. Too bad they aren't even trying anymore.
based minimalist.
Linux is getting there but still not the best option for gaming. Your choices are to either get a fraction of the steam library windows gets or to fucking around in Wine trying to get a game to work.
Lutris has helped with the latter.
Haven't even heard of this. Looks pretty good. I spent most of my teenage years fucking around with wine whenever I wanted to play something. Have you used Lutris yourself? Is there a performance drop like in wine?
MacOS has surprisingly few OS devs. As in, close to zero.
They have created a really good UI and some incredibly good graphic layer, far beyond anything created by Windows and on another solar system from X, but the kernel is still the same old shit from 2010.
MacOS' kernel performance is horrendous. They hide it with an incredibly well done graphic compositor and some terrific userspace libraries, but at the center it's all a rotten core.
Interestingly Linux has the opposite problem. Linux is by far the fastest kernel available, but X is so shit people have stopped trying to salvage it. Nowadays we're trying to get past it with Wayland.
Putrid pulls scripts from the community to install games without fiddling with anything.
Not personally, but my understanding of it is it automates much of the tedium involved with Wine.
It is install scripts in their simplest form that SHOULD just work without breaking something else.
True, but the need to fuck around manually in Wine has been going down fast now that you can install and run Windows games straight from Steam with Proton.
I don't believe any of you. What are you playing, Tux Kart and emulators? Post recently played games or you're full of shit.
I use linux for last two years. Would never go back to Windows, which I use only for gaming today. I have one main drive with Kubuntu and second drive with W10 LTSB. Windows drive is completely clean, zero personal info or documents, not even a browser, only games. First Linux drive is for everything else. And it is good.

How about non-steam games? Witcher 3 is Gold but I have it on GOG. And I play Titanfall 2 a lot but it's on an entirely different launcher.
What is X exactly?
Mesa drivers aren't drivers. They often emulate everything on CPU, because you need to install your graphic card drivers, you nincompoop. Of course TF2 will stutter if you literally didn't install your graphic card driver.
The issue there is that Windows usually does not work without graphic card drivers, while Linux work pretty okay, but has horrendous perf in games. Install your drivers kiddo.
Not him but you can add non-Steam games into your Steam library as you would on Windows and if the option is enabled in Steam's settings it'll apply Proton + DXVK to it. In the case of Witcher it'd probably play the exact same with the GOG version.
According to the Lutris page for TF2, the Origin client is the bigger problem. Also no MP.
Windows VM with GPU passthrough or dual boot (or staying on Windows :^)) would be saner.
dmcv has been working well since it was released
>59.8
Tell me about systemd. Why does /g/ hate it?
Linux graphic layer. What prints something on screen.
It's a old design from literally 1980, overdesigned, with really poor performance, buggy as hell, and many people have tried to improve it but it's shit. I can go on and explain exactly why it is shit, in large detail, but I think it will bore you. Do ask if you want to know more.
X is still loved by old guard types who don't really comprehend that 1980's design is not good design, but everyone else (and that includes the people who actively works on X, every single one of them, ask them) hate it.
Nowadays a replacement for most of X functionalities is Wayland/Weston, which is far better in every aspect. Unfortunately the replacement is taking time, so even now most of the distribution still uses X. 99.9% of all graphic related issue in Linux (and poor performance) is X related.
fps fluctuates between 58-60 on windows too regardless of what game
It's large and unaudited, so there could be something undesired lurking in it like there once was in chromium.
>Do ask if you want to know more.
Different user, but I am interested.

Switched from win10 to Debian xfce because of all the spying bs. My ram usage went from perma 3gb on fresh boot to 400mb. The command line is comfy ad once you get used to it
The core idea behind the design of X (1980's design, before the advent of any graphic cards) is that a X client asks to a X server to print primitives to screen. As in, "a line", "a square", "fill the squares with that color".
This is the core X design. There is a protocol behind it, and it can be used on the net, but wasn't made for it of course (1980 design).
The protocol is horrendous. Any action asks for an answer from the server, nothing is compressed, all actions are a call which had to round trips, can't batch. The error codes are absolutely terrible. The performance is ridiculously bad.
But okay. We go on. The issue is that nowadays we don't call the graphic layer for each primitives. We have graphic cards. We fill buffers and simply ask to the graphic layer to print that buffer on screen, and also the layers are often gpu buffers, because it's faster.
But X can't do it. X prints lines when you ask it to do it, not entire buffers/images. So what did they do? They added an expansion which does that over the X protocol. Badly. But the X protocol is shit, so they did the best of jobs they could do with what they had.
Still not compressed over internet of course. And still thousand of unnecessary roundtrips, and no batch operations.
So nowadays X is ~2 million lines of code, most of which useless, a horrible protocol client/server, and no error adequate reporting in most of the syscall. It crashes occasionally, can't support multiple GPU (not without hacks), can't support weird configurations, and is just so shit. Everyone hate it. The people who support that shit hate it. Wayland is a step forward, and a very good one at that.
Perfect, all clear now. thanks for the effortposting user. You a good lad.
Different guy, but what can offer me a stable Wayland experience right now and what would I be missing?
Do Manjaro
Comes with Steam pre-installed
>recommend Memejaro
While I use it myself, do not do that as a beginner. Updates tend to be fucky and it is also rolling. For a first distro, either use U/Kubuntu or Mint.
Is the xbone controller the best one for linux, or is there a better one?
Wait a little. Ubuntu is supposed to move to Wayland right now, if they didn't do it already. IIRC Redhat/Centos already moved to Wayland in the very last version. The distributions are making the transition right now, after literally years of dragging their feet.
>what would I be missing?
Unfortunately, nothing but the NVidia official drivers. The little fuckers are the only one that didn't move to Wayland already. You have the open source NVidia driver (nouveau) which works well with Wayland, but NVidia is behaving like a retard like they always are, so you won't have the top notch next gen NVidia drivers on Wayland. Which is a blocking point for many gamers, I understand.
Everything else works.
Interesting stuff. Got any more Linux wisdom to bestow upon us?
>Memejaro
Why is it referred to as memejaro?
I use it on my laptop and one of my desktops, had no issues
Updates tend to fuck up your whole distro sooner or later. I use it too, but it happened before.
At about half a million lines of code it's not something that you can just read through.
>Dual-boot
Seems like more trouble than it's worth.
>VM
How would this process work? Any specific software you can recommend? And I'd probably take a big performance hit, right?
I also use Adobe stuff occasionally for work, would those work via VM too?
Denuvo games work fine on Linux. I played DMC 5 and performance was just as good as on Windows with a 1080/6600K
Nothing else, except maybe that I don't understand all the hate for systemd.
Now I am no fan of Lennart Poettering. He fucked up with D-Bus, he fucked up with Pulseaudio. He likes to fuck up. But he didn't fuck up with systemd, as far as I can see, and the project is valuable. Many people who worked with sysv init hate it, with the exception of some old grumbling guards again, and systemd is just plain better. To work with, in term of performance, maintenability or scalability.
Look at MacOS. They did that first, and they were very successful, like only Apple in userspace can. Systemd is just Linux catching up really well in that regard. And don't tell me about kiss and shit, the cascade of shellscripts in any distrib before systemd is not kiss.
>How would this process work?
You need two GPUs, Intel/AMD iGPU are valid secondaries, blacklist the primary one you want to passthrough, then do it. That's grossly over simplified, but that is the gist. The VM gets basically bare metal GPU access.
One GPU can be done if you run the host OS headless (no display) and ssh (text-based) into it from the VM.
>Any specific software you can recommend?
QEMU seems to be the popular choice.
>And I'd probably take a big performance hit, right?
Not really, no. You're more likely to lose perf with CPU and RAM shenanigans but even those can be autism config'd away.
>I also use Adobe stuff occasionally for work, would those work via VM too?
I don't see why not.
The bigger issue with GPU passthrough is your hardware making it easy (IOMMU groups) and I think nvidia in particular makes their driver a fucking pain to install.

Linux is objectively better than windows in every conceivable way. It's so light and fast that even 10 year old potato laptops feel smooth as silk. Windows will just chug on the same hardware (though the biggest factor in the performance differential is the aggressive swapping on the hard drive so an ssd will go a long way towards closing the gap)
As far as gaming is concerned I'm basically locked into windows for the time being. Support for Linux does seem to be improving after proton but even then there are third party DRM solutions that fuck things up if you want to play anything online.
Is this a copypasta? This looks like a copypasta.
typical bootlicker response, have fun getting your privacy stripped away and going to prison for eventual wrong-think laws
I love linux!
Usually it is the opposite, kek
The same problem than with pulseaudio. Performance, scalability, complexity, and (lack of) resilience. Added to that that it was strongly seen as solving a problem that Linux never had (i.e IPC DCOM, which everyone hates on Windows, and why would we implement it on Linux?).
The performance issues of d-bus is acknowledged by everyone. D-bus isn't efficient. It has scalability issues. They tried to push a d-bus kernel implementation some years ago to solve the performance issues, but Linus told them to fuck off.
The other problems are more subtle. D-bus had a number of bugs and crashes for a long time, just like Pulseaudio. Moreover, D-Bus was, and still is, seen as a cancer on Linux: we don't need a DCOM. Certainly not that DCOM. It's bizarre and weird, and counter to the Unix philosophy, and we never needed one, and it only causes problems on Windows, so why the heck are you pushing it? And it's causing of course even more problems.
Same reaction with pulseaudio, and with systemd. And while I acknowledge pulseaudio critiques, systemd is a real solution to a real problem, and Pottering seems to have learned from his mistakes, as it's really better, more stable, and faster.

no? I been testing last week and it's fucking crap?
>How long until you switch to Linux?
Never because windows 10 is getting better and new ps 5 and new Nswitch are comming?
literally during past 5 years windows 10 added more functionality to gui and system than linux during past 10 years, literally why waste time on this penguin crap? it still require console to set up graphic and shit
You could try booting from a USB or spare hard drive
now in 1903 win 10 compilation they added more options and utilities for home desktop
FUCK LINUX, who the hell need this crap?! Don't be naive
yes
imagine replying to yourself twice in a row and (hopefully) pretending to be a retard
Uh oh, they found us.
>where was gaming on linux before
When I started using Linux in 2006:
- Minesweeper, chess, snake and similar games that came with the distro or were in distro's repo
- Some simple games made by programmers in their free time (Armagetron Advanced, SuperTuxKart, etc.)
- ID Tech 3 games
- WINE was able to run UT99 and few other games.
>and how has it been improving?
Valve probably sees further into the future than most of us, and decided to invest into development of Linux based on that
- Many games got native Linux release since Steam came to Linux in 2013
- WINE / DKCK / other translation layers being developed insanely fast
- Proton integrated into Steam, many Windows games now work without any issues
- Lutris is merging every possible aspect of Linux gaming into a single platform
Question is: What does Valve see that Yea Forums borderline refuses to even acknowledge?
until I can get any jap game to run out of the box by double clicking that shit on linux, I'm not switching
bitch lasagna
>What does Valve see
Microsoft's obvious attempts at controlling the entire PC market by getting people onto a rolling release OS.
I'm normie who use desktop, so I can see what is shit and what is inferior in use
Thank you Rakesh, 0,002 rupees has been deposited to your Microsoft account
You're basically saying beef is too hard to chew for you and you'd rather have a McChicken.
>not M$0.00000000002
The other day I got one of those messages on my screen saying Windows 7 wouldn't be supported much longer. Freaked me out seeing that, wasn't expecting it. I guess this means it's time to start learning how to use a linux os.
Every time I try out linux I get overwhelmed by stuff. Like the installation will come with all sorts of applications, like multiple text editors or multiple terminals, and I don't know which is best, or if they do different things and I need all of them, and if I can just delete everything I don't want.
>config'd away
Do you know any comparison video or review by chance?
I always cringe how linux fags shitpost like
>Ahahaha classic windows! Don't waste time bro, install linux mint/ubuntu, it's free, have software, it's easy and it's fantastic!
>Wow ok bro!
>Installs, it's too complicated to install, afterwards; WTF is this console shit, why it have no apps on it, why my wifi is lagging, why my graphic is not settable? what the fuck is this scam shit?!
I fucking hate autism, it should be illegal, linux is piece of crap, not ready for home desktop
nice one
You can easily try learning linux on virtualbox. That way when you fuck stuff up, which will definitely happen, you can just try setting up stuff again until your comfortable with the process.
Of what, CPU and RAM config differences?
It's mentioned here: wiki.archlinux.org
You would want to dedicate/"pin" certain CPU cores/threads and contiguous memory pages for less impact and a more 1:1 mapping for the VM.
It just saves a step since things won't metaphorically bounce around on the host OS.
Rule number 1;
Never trust linuxfag, NEVER, windows is more normie friendly, same for mac, linux is NOT, don't waste your time or nerves
ill wait like 5 years so everyone can beta test steam proton for me
Is it possible to install a distro onto a USB stick? I never really liked using virtualbox and I also don't want to just use a "live cd". Could I install debian or something onto a flash drive, plug that in, and just select to boot off that instead of my hard drive when turning the pc on?
...or is that a terrible idea? Maybe it'd go too slow like that, I dunno.
>I'm retarded so it sucks
what the ABSOLUTE FUCK bros?
Not them but I also love how they post crying wojac behind smirking mask and shitpost that it's all fault of windows that their subsystem suck balls, you won't have working system if you won't hire people and pay them, don't be naive, linux will be always crap until people learn basics
yes, use rufus from windows
usb performance is not particularly indicative unless you're on USB 3.0, but even then it'll be way faster off an SSD
you can still poke around with it as if it were installed
rufus lacks this option I believe, but linuxlive usb lets you create a virtual harddive of sorts on the install usb so it becomes a complete OS (while still being able to install) so you can keep files, configs, apps across multiple reboots
I been posting from normalfag point of view, in windows I have all I want under clickable menu, in linux you don't want put options to gui because 'it will make it less secure' [this is argument I heard]
I too use desktop environments on Linux. I'm a basic bitch so my favorite is XFCE.
I like how whiskermenu has a parameter to spawn the application menu at the cursor's position, which I then mapped to my Super key.
I haven't had any problems so far. Even texthookers work.
>How long until you switch to Linux?
It's been at least 10 years. Only in the last two years is Linux gaming good.
In the past it was running wine fuckery or licking up the native apps. Now with Proton and an upstream updates wine life is getting comfy.
You Linux gamer newfags will never know the hardships.
You're shitposting, but Linux (the kernel at least) is objectively better than Windows.
All syscalls are faster. This even surprised Valve, which didn't expect to gain 300% on most operations. The syscalls are also safer, and the kernel runs better in general.
As for whole distributions, they're as easy to use as Windows, and even more sometimes.
Linux has some issues on the graphic stack, but the real issue is that no one fucking care for it, and video games aren't made for it. That's the primary issue. The single one. Windows is objectively worse in almost all regards, but it has games, so people use it.
Thanks! Is there some actual comparison somewhere of gaming performance? This looks to me as it would be a good idea to do that for e.g. video-editing applications or rendering stuff, but do you expect a real gain when doing this?
I really wish I didn't fry my socket 1155 ASSrock motherboard, then I could test it right now...
well the one I posted didn't work, even when I threw it on wine. I saw that there's an entire pastebin for getting RPGmaker shit (simple as hell to get on windows) to run on loonix, and I just thought "why would you do this to yourself".
Kitty don't lie, Windows is easiest desktop to use, literally all you need is ability to use mouse or touchpad and ability to read. Stop comparing it to linux where deep system settings are hidden behind command line or are lacking, now in w10 1903 people will get MORE sys. settings to toggle on/off while in linux you will still need your fucking wiki and google to even dig out the shit you wanted to set, fuck off lair
The real gain from a Windows VM under Linux is that it's not your daily, or it can be but it's in a container.
Performance wise should be within a couple percentage but you may for example lose performance in CPU-limited applications if you end up pinning your physical cores for the VM and exclude hyperthreaded threads (i.e. 8 of 16 threads on a Ryzen 2700X). Depends on the application.
GPU performance loss is not really a concern, probably a couple percent.
>Linux gaming is getting better insanely fast.
source? what developments have been made recently?
When the shit I play runs natively on it. I dont care for dynamic binary tools for all I care they suck dick.
For dev stuff already there for quite some time.
You're just shitposting. I'm telling it like it is, just because I find you funny and entertaining.
>open steam
>enable proton
>if it works it works
Valve can't hold a gun to dev's heads for native versions.
Dunno t b h with what M$ is doing lately maybe they will reach some kind of a common runtime or whatever you would call it considering things like WSL and what not.
Unless you're a sysadmin or need to use some obscure old tool from the DOS days, you pretty much never need to use the command line in windows. Meanwhile on linux you have to use it all the time. Need to install something that isn't in the repositories? command line. Need to install nvidia drivers without everything crashing? command line. Need to run a program with a different .so? command line. Need to set up/configure a wine prefix? command line. Doing just about anything beyond launching a web browser or playing music means either using the command line or editing poorly documented text files to configure things.
Linux and Mac fag here, he's right, in past 5 years Windows 10 added more settings to gui and utilities for home/power users than Linux. Linux froze in time
What is the last thing you heard?
Most recent news is updated version of Proton. But if you want a juicy list, you will have to look for happenings since the start of 2018.
[citation needed]
>this is what Lincucks actually believe
There is no such thing as "objectively better", only subjectively better for a particular purpose. And if you actually want to use a computer, whether it's for serious business or entertainment, Windows is better since it actually has software.
Linux is great if you want to learn about computers, or how the operating system works, and I'm sure it's not your fault that it's garbage for anything else, but that's just reality. Crying about it won't change anything.
I love this narrative that W10 is somehow 'improving' when 1809 was their biggest disaster yet.
You know your phone runs Linux, right?
In the case of Ubuntu,
>Need to install something that isn't in the repositories?
Synaptic (including adding PPAs)
>Need to install nvidia drivers without everything crashing?
They have that one window in the same software settings window usually.
>Need to run a program with a different .so?
Wat, file association? I can do that within Thunar in a few clicks.
>Need to set up/configure a wine prefix?
You're clearly smart enough to know you need to deal with wine prefixes. Some tools do exist, like Lutris, for off-hands Wine handling.
You are probably another linux fag who don't understand that free is not equal of quality.
Make better gui for home users, make command line not needed to use and then we will talk, windows is shitting on you and I'm not surprised it is still the king of the desktops
A fork of the Linux kernel, yes. The userland doesn't even remotely resemble what most people call "Linux". Plus, Google is working on their own kernel which will probably replace Linux in future versions of Android and ChromeOS.
Also more for the repository bit, ditros do associate their packages, i.e. .deb, to their GUI software centers.
and it doesn't require from me to use console to change advanced settings, based how you don't know what you talking about + I need root to do something which is hard to access
if hardware is crap then system is crap, I had no problems with 7, 8 or 10
>google
>replace
maybe for a year or two and then they'll scrap it
nice trips
Once you stop being ignorant you will be also able to see that what you said is wrong.
Not completely wrong, you do have some points in there, but mostly wrong.
kitty, but google is working on something real to BTFO windows form desktops, they have one of the biggest app store in their hands and it only need work with desktop
find me professional and use medical ect. software for linux, most of time it's for windows xp+ you have zero idea about software market...
and used*
Windows has most of support for now, linux is used in other industries due to costs
Nobody wants an "appstore" on desktops. MS tried it and it was a humiliating failure.
>This Linux doesn't match my prejudices of what Linux should be, therefore it is not Linux!
>Also, the current market situation might change in the distant future!
Wow. Yeah, you sure showed me wrong.
The second my windows 7 PC dies
Steam is by all definitions an appstore, except that the apps are a list instead of square icons.
just get LTSC, microsoft talks shit about it because "i-it doesn't get microsoft edge!! it's unsuitable for home users!!" but it's a direct upgrade to 7 once you do the necessary tweaking (that all versions of 10 need) to it like start menu restoration and getting rid of telemetry crap
reddit.com
>Synaptic (including adding PPAs)
That's still the repositories. Not everything has a ppa or is shipped as a .deb/.rpm/whatever.
>They have that one window in the same software settings window usually.
And I've had mostly shitty experiences getting that to use the latest drivers reliably.
>Wat, file association?
.so are the Linux equivalent to .dlls on Windows. Sometimes you run into programs that need a library that isn't or can't be installed on your system the normal way. On Windows you can just drop the .dll in the same directory as the application you want to run, but on Linux you have to explicitly tell ld where to look for libraries with either LD_PRELOAD or LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
>Lutris
Lutris had stability issues when I last tried it a couple of years ago, and I'm not too keen on running random user submitted scripts on my system.
>last tried it a couple of years ago
Well then that's not a valid argument now is it?
I'd like to but Forza Horizon 4 is W10 only and Launchbox has no support yet
>Not everything has a ppa or is shipped as a .deb/.rpm/whatever.
Well fucking gee Billy, what do you propose we do?
>my experience is everyone's experience
>.so
So it's also the application's fault. Use snaps/appimages/flatpaks/flavor of the month then.
I was then I ran an update that tanked my dxvk performance so I said fuck it
can say the same about windows some times
I already did. Proton on Steam is pretty nice but still has some problems.
Some VNs are supposed to have audio problems. I encountered them in Flowers and Kindred Spirits on the roof (it can happen that two tracks play at the same time), also the text box (just the box and the background color, not the text) in ksotr is gone when playing with Proton so the text is hardly visible in some locations.
It's not just specialist fields like that. Even basic software is worse on Linux.
>office
You get a shitty, free knockoff of Microsoft Office. I guess it kind of works, but good luck getting anyone to take your open document formats seriously.
>photo editing
Fucking GIMP
>programming
vim or emacs or some shit. Linux users genuinely believe that the best way to write program code is NOT a modern IDE, but a terminal text editor from the 1980's that you rice yourself to give it basic syntax highlighting and a compile hotkey.
>video games
Hahaha, as if.
I guess it's fine for web browsing, assuming your distro doesn't make installing the media codecs a pain in the ass. If you literally just use a computer for facebook, youtube and email, Linux will probably work.
Yes. I switched to linucs literally 2 months ago had almost no problems with it so far. Praise gabe.
Ever hear of Visual Studio Code?
>Hahaha, as if.
If is now old man.
Emacs is the most powerful and modern IDE. It is NOT a terminal text editor.
That's a text editor, not an IDE. It's more comparable to something like Sublime than Visual Studio proper.
>Fucking GIMP
more like fucking kek, those faggots never heard of affinity and other paid professional stuff
>Linux thread
>Windows defenders show up
>They literally type like third-worlders
I thought Pajeets were a meme, holy shit.
I've played Nier Automata, Sekiro, Dark Souls 2 and 3, Dead or Alive 6, Monster Hunter World, Bayonetta, Shenmue, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, Tekken 7, A Hat in Time, and more
On Linux
Ace Combat 7, DmC 5, and Resident Evil 2 Remake all work on Linux too. They all came out in 2019
just run osx under linux, boom pro
>tfw played the demo on the Claw disk a zillion times
Literally no good games.
>installed
oof
Don't pick one that forces a compositor like Gnome.
They added features that Linux always had, like desktop workspaces and.... copy/paste into a terminal...
over a year now. it works because all i play are freefag games, indie games, old games, romhacks and team fortress 2
When I can get a new rig.
That Linus TT video made me install Manjaro out of curiosity on an old notebook here and it's actually pretty cool. Don't know if I'll make the switch on my desktop, however.
>Try Ubuntu
>Ethernet is so slow I can't even run a speed test
>Look up how to fix it
>"Ubuntu is perfect it's not our fault your shitty hardware doesn't work"
>Buy a different brand motherboard
>Same fucking problem
Linux is a joke
Stop looking at only native games.
Over 80% of Windows games run on Linux through Proton
>gimp is crap
>krita is crap
>libre office is crap
>open office is crap
>photo viewers are crap
>music software is crap [know from first hand]
>video software is crap
what did he mean by this
Buy an IBM thinkpad you fucking brainlet.
Yes
Hiding any icons from the system tray breaks it completely
Do pirated Windows games work if added as non-Steam games? That'd be sick.
how well do emulators run on it?
>buy special computer because our free system is fucking crap
no, thanks
Running games on Proton or Wine is just adding an additional layer of bugs on top of already existing bugs. The fact that there is a compatibility list for Linux is a big turn off for me. Computers are so cheap these days I'll just dedicate another PC for linux.
did you download Ubuntu from piratebay or something?
>free software babies can't make a proper IDE, so Microsoft needs to help them out
You're right, but I still think it's hilarious.
Go back to your foot candies, Stallman.
No you retard
I've tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Manjaro, SUSE, and PopOS all from their official websites
None of them work
Very well
And Lutris knows how to work with most of them
lutris.net
Why you all pretending that all problems with linux are lies? there's already ton of threads over internet asking how to solve something that doesn't work, I can't deny that windows has similar problems but most of time it's problem with drivers or system settings, not fresh installs
>>krita is crap
You're pretty fucking retarded. Krita rivals and beats almost all proprietary alternatives.
There's also MyPaint
>gimp is crap
Maybe you're just a fucking moron that can't use it? It's perfectly fine for 99% of photo editing users.
>>libre office is crap
There is no reason for anyone to use an Office Suite unless you're a Pajeet working in a Pajeet job.
But if you are, it's not "worse", the problem is incompatibilities between proprietary Microsoft document formats when opened and edited in both.
If everyone used Libre Office, there would be no problem.
>>photo viewers are crap
Literally fucking what? Every single photo viewer is better than Windows image viewer.
You can use mpv as your image viewer, which is the best quality image viewer there is on any platform.
>>music software is crap [know from first hand]
Because you're some kind of fucking retard that only likes Foobar2K and your little retard baby brain can't handle any difference whatsoever?
>>video software is crap
Kdenlive rivals proprietary video editors.
There's also Lightworks.
Literally just fucking kill yourself my man, you're a fucking moron and should kill yourself.
Just played Sekiro and Silent Storm.
>if everyone used my shitty document format there would be no compatibility issues!
and after all these attempts you still didn't think that issue might be in your hardware?
Or did you come across any posts on internet that describe what you were experiencing as a common issue that affects most computers?
Only thing really missing is more video/sound software desu, retards complaining about things that haven't been a problem for over 10 years is hilarious though, when they recommend windows 10 as good modern option for anything regarding accessibility. Funny.
There is no reason everyone shouldn't be using open document formats except for the fact that most people are retards.
1803 was the last good one feels bad
>Only thing really missing is more video/sound software desu,
This isn't missing.
I know literally a person who makes thousands of euros in germany every month, he's working mostly on windows and mac, he works with video, music, animation, office and so on, and he tried use linux for his job like in january for fun and dropped it after one day because of software quality and lack of standarization. So stop pretending
well usually those threads also include a solution to the problem or at least a lot of useful info.
And driver issues were a thing 10 years ago. Modern distros work well with almost all hardware.
I tried two motherboards and there's no issues on Windows
Linux is just garbage
And yes, there's several threads online about the same issue, filled with retards like you claiming it has to be a hardware issue because muh open sores is perfect
> So stop pretending
As soon as you stop pretending to be a professional audio engineer working in a studio.
>implying settings hidden behind fucking REGISTRY is more is more friendly that all software having human readable settings
He described it as 'lagging behind' for gimp, krita something else and all other avaliable, he uses paid software
sounds like he's a perfect example of a average computer user who wants to just play games and watch porn
>one day
Sounds like a fair shake
They are because they have simplified gui under right click
>krita
I refuse to believe this, because this is literally better than anything proprietary.
No they aren't
No, he just want work and he understand that there are standards, this is difference, a wall you will never jump over with your freeware crap
Sekiro runs flawlessly, as does Risk of Rain 2. Before that, I finally played Hollow Knight, which has a native Linux version.
> freeware crap
Freeware is proprietary software.
Open source free software is a completely different thing.
Basically you're a fucking moron with a sub-80 IQ who can barely use a computer.
Fucking kill yourself, I genuinely want you to fucking kill yourself.
never is a long time
I remember times when it was common knowledge that Android will never be more used than iPhone OS
>hurr industry standard bad
>hurr obscure format good!
Your argument literally boils down to "microsoft bad"
I meant for production of those things not playback, not completely missing of course but it's one of the things with the bigger room for improvement right now.
I feel threatened when other people use an OS that I don't use.
There is not a single technical reason that Microsoft document formats are better than open document formats.
The only difference is that one is open and cross platform, and one is proprietary and meant to lock people into Microsoft.
So yes, Open Document formats are OBJECTIVELY superior.
Literally the ONLY reason people use MS document formats, or even MS Office itself, are because most people are retards.
but in your case nothing changes for better, there's no progression of your free carpware bait
Yeah, this isn't missing at all.
You can edit or create video and audio at a professional level on Linux right now, with both open source software and proprietary.
Stop spreading FUD, kill yourself.
I confirm this, even on windows I must use cracked paid software because free stuff is fucking shit
>blender
>good
>scrot
what year is this
What's happening on Jan 14th 202p for Windows? Is 11 releasing that day?
Once again your argument is just a convoluted way of saying "microsoft bad".
>he thinks that open document is not an international standard
think again
iso.org
But I don't see how that is related to video games. Actually ok, yes, it is relevant to game design documents, which is more of a /agdg/ territory
Windows 7 is officially kill. Won't stop retards though. They hate 10 and Linux, and 8/8.1 are already EOL (TIL).
They'll ride it until it can't be rode no more.
I'm not professional but on windows I use clip paint studio to create animations and make artworks because on crita I can't even set up right brushes to work with the way I work and so on. Also krita is so fucking lagg, doesn't matter if I use gpu or intel
+ libre office is non stop crashing for me, and lately I lost my work because it could not restore auto save
go ahead and tell me where the right click menu is to increase mouse polling rate or truly turn off mouse acceleration. or tell me how you can update your shitty clock sync time from ntp to utc without running some random ass commands with no documentation online? i couldnt even disable the taskbar popup previews in windows 7 the best i could do was change the registry setting to a big ass fucking number after a google adventure. all of my complaints are easy as fuck to change in linux, with all software storing their settings in one folder (the home folder). and i can make a tiny ass script i could run had i ever wanted to reinstall which i dont even need to do because im on rolling release. windurrs users have to download thousand line scripts just to remove malicious updates let alone change anything that really matters to a user
enlighten me, it just take fucking screen shots.
I dunno, flameshot is hip these days.
You have 2 formats
They support the same exact features
Only difference
1 is proprietary and only supports 1 platform
1 is open, free, and cross platform
There is no reason to use the former unless you're retarded, or get forced into using it because someone else is retarded.
He's against closed formats, retard. Not just Microsoft.
Try this software on Linux where it is actually developed on and meant to be used and all your problems would be solved.
Windows gets shitty ports of open source software.
I've never had crashes with LO, although I've had performance issues in older versions with large spreadsheets.
it seems like a massive bloated program, I just press prtsc and it works and shift prtsc to only capture the active window.
tfw not over 9000
No one uses Linux except to run headless devices and servers anyways, there's literally no reason to use non-standard open source formatting. Office works better than your obscure shit, just accept it and stop making yourself look stupid
I'm already dual booting but this W10 forced migration might cause me to switch for good.
I mean... I am completely serious now, I don't understand why they add auto save it's...just...well, many times MSO crashed for me and it all was saved
I'm playing sekiro on linux. Runs fine except some particle effects and waterfalls don't appear.
>no support
fug
You're literally a fucking Pajeet.
different strokes, not bloated at all. can bind to keys in the same way.
>Try this software on Linux where it is actually developed on and meant to be used and all your problems would be solved.
>Windows gets shitty ports of open source software.
then what's the point? ever heard of adversting?
While I do agree that FOSS projects tend to be slower due to lack of motivational jew shekels behind them, I would say that the progress being made is still not negligible.
And you are free to contribute and support the projects that you want to see succeed.
Or you can complain about how it's shit because nobody decided to go support the developers.
Well, there is no reason to go support the developers if you don't care about the freedom that free and open source software provides.
But in that case you have absolutely no right to complain when you get jew'd over by jews who funded the development of the more "user friendly" thing that you insist on using.
You got 6 months then
windowsfags will NEVER EVER get psdoom
This is really getting sad now. Thanks for conceding that I'm right though.
Is he trolling or those faggots really make ports for windows?
jesus christ...I fucking can't... people see if something works like crap
the point is windowsfags dont know how to program and programmers dont run windows so cannot extensively bugtest for it
Has any Linux/free program project fallen for the Patreon meme already? If not then it's better than modern windows by default
Do gamepads/arcade sticks work well on Linux? Do they recognize d-input and x-input? That's probably my biggest concern since I don't play kb/m games.
emulators have, but they're more platform agnostic
You're the biggest retard in this thread
Tons of open source emulators have Patreon funds.
daily reminder that until the trannoids, women and minorities undermining the development are removed from linux and this earth, liniggers will continue to receiving beatings for allowing this to happen
i will consider it the, but at the moment I will keep using scrot, maybe next time I format my pc.
>make software for free
>it's not made for the most popular desktop
>recieve negative adversting and cause shitstorm
>people learns that shit began on linux
>they check linux and don't like it
>they pirate photoshop and mso
ABSOLUTELY BASED AND REDPILLED
There are a lot of free software projects.
Some devs are asking for monetary support, some are not.
Linux kernel itself is not because it already has fucking huge community around it and fuckton of support from tech industry.
>get told
>N-nobody uses Linux anyway!
>all your problems would be solved
Sure they would. I also had fun just trying to take this screenshot as you can see.
most gamepads get their input fully recognised and interpreted.
How the emulators / games then use those inputs, that's a separate, per-game issue
all the things ive tried recognize my 360 controller and every literally who controller i own line ascii ps1 controller, buffallo classic pad, steam controller (even has a freefag nosteam driver frontend called sc-controller) and nintendo 64 controller. cannot comment on newer things like ps4 or xbone but ive never enoucntered problems eith controllers outside having to have them plugged in BEFORE opening a game for them to work
In about -10 months.
Gamepad support is actually far superior.
You've always been able to plugin a PS3 or PS4 controller and it just works.
Linux does use dinput or xinput though, these are Microsoft Windows APIs
xinput actually only supports Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers
The only reason you can use other controllers on Steam is because it emulates them into Xbox 360 controllers.
Basically, when running Windows games or software through Wine or Proton (Steam's version of Wine built in), it will emulate your gamepad into an Xbox 360 controller for xinput games.
Steam/Proton is very good at this with Windows games, vanilla Wine is worse, you may need to use something like x360ce just like you would on real Windows, or run that program through Proton/Steam instead of vanilla Wine.
>be linux
>has shiton of support
>still fucking suck after years comparing to cancerous and hated windows 10
abolutely redpilled
Told how? Told that one is made by an actual reputable source (Microsoft) and another is made by a bunch of sweaty neckbeards in their mom's basements?
my ps3 and ps4 controller work fine out of the box, even over bluetooth (even sets the BT addr on ps3)
One issue I had with my PS3 controller is using it over BT with Moonlight, works fine when wired because it goes through xboxdrv. Over BT I had to manually assign it as a wireless xbox controller (with udev rules on connect) and map everything before it worked.
>please report this error to help improve this software
Well, did you?
Linus BTFO'ed these people uncountable times, meanwhile Microsoft and Apple accepted them right away, Linux adopted a CoC last year, Apple and Microsoft had CoC and diversity inclusion programs for years.
If anything the iToddlers and Windowsfas were the ones who allowed this to happen in the first place.
Imagine if someone said to you: Hey, don't buy a car to drive with, by a flurfen instead! What's a flurfen? Well it's a thing that goes on roads like a car. It doesn't take gasoline like your car does, and it uses blurmps instead of wheels, but it's okay all you gotta do is follow this user manual! Make sure it's the right user manual though, because different colored flurfen's have completely different maintenance requirements. Oh, and you can't take these to a mechanic, you have to troubleshoot them yourself and fix them yourself if they go bad. Certain roads might not work well with it but if you follow this website it'll show which roads you can use. But hey you don't have to buy gasoline!
>Linux does use dinput or xinput though,
does not*
The Linux kernel is really good. Not sure what you're talking about.
Most closed formats aren't even made by microsoft.
>car analogy
This analogy doesn't even make sense because Windows is less user friendly than ever right now.
Last time I checked Linux kernel itself is way more popular than all versions of Windows combined due to it running in the pocket of every normalfag and every other devide on this world that is not Windows PC or made by Apple.
But this is only a bit related to gaming, as kernel is not the only thing that is required to run a game.
Technically all the improvements that came into Linux kernel from various parts of tech industry also helped a bit at making games run better on PCs that run Linux.

so what if desktop system is fucking crap
Using Linux is like using a right hand drive electric car in left hand drive countries. It'll work, but it just makes everything slightly more annoying and you have to make significant compromises and waste a lot of time to get wherever you want to go
Okay then, explain to me in a food analogy why I should choose Linux over Windows.
kitty we don't talk about system made for calculators but about home desktop
well if you were capable of reading my post to the end you would see the "PCs that run Linux" part.
I still don't know why libre officie is crashing for me, or runs slow or often hangs while mso has none of these issues

>in a food analogy
kek, niceme.me
Have you seen the price if gasoline lately? I'd actually take that.
But anyway it's a shit analogy. A better one would be comparing Windows vs Linux to Firefox vs Internet Explorer. Yeah, there's some bullshit sites that are designed to only run in IE, but Firefox doesn't spy on you and runs much better.
>libreoffice
>C
>so what if desktop system is fucking crap
It's not though.
Windows is complete shit to use on a desktop. They're just now getting basic features like desktop workspaces.
Using Windows to me feels like going back to the 90s. It feels like I'm using Pajeet-ware
Even the open source AMD DirectX9 Linux drivers are faster than AMD's drivers on Windows.
Windows is complete shit, the only reason you think it's not is because you're confusing:
"This software only supports Windows", with "Windows is a good operating system".
Windows is basically like using a video game console, it's that locked down.
CAPTCHA was cars
>using AMD to begin with
You played yourself
swap windows and linux
well what I mean by dinput and xinput is that often gamepads/arcade sticks advertise the fact that they have these different settings available, presumably because they're the main methods of input reading on windows. Even offbrand devices advertise xinput despite not being 360/xbone controllers.
So for Linux the fact that they're labeled as being dinput or xinput compatible doesn't mean anything because Linux has its own way of interpreting inputs?
Windows purposefully makes changes to make programs run like shit if it competes with one of their products.
IMAGINE
This is the most pathetic conspiracy theory ever
lmao
Linux is cheap healthy food that tastes really good but is only available two towns over and they don't deliver so you have to get it yourself.
Windows is Mcdonalds but more expensive.
I really don't care if you're too retarded to see why a company would try to chase away competitive options.
I wish I could pirate Mcdonalds
I've never had a controller that doesn't work, even more obscure stuff like racing wheels are fine.
Some games might not work with all controllers (same as on windows), but you can use eg. SC Controller in those cases. It's an application made to configure steam controller without using steam, but it can also map any controller into an emulated 360 pad / keyboard / mouse.
You are right only if we admit that linux suck ass, because in other way it makes zero sense
Linux controller input uses something called evdev, that is the equivalent of Microsoft's xinput.
It can be abstracted through SDL2, so some programs just use SDL2 instead of directly using evdev
Native Linux programs will directly use evdev or SDL2 for controller input.
Windows software ran through Proton (in Steam), will have their input directly emulated into xinput, this actually works beautifully.
Even on Windows, Steam emulates controllers into Xbox 360 controllers and handles xinput, so you're not directly using xinput.
Windows software ran through vanilla Wine has less good xinput handling, even though it's recently improved a lot. You may need to use something like x360ce, just like you would on Windows.
en.wikipedia.org
It's not a conspiracy they really did that.
How long does it take to get familiar with linux?
The linux chef cooks for you for free and also gives you the recipe. The windows chef puts some bad shit in the food but won't tell you about it.
Except that linux never delivers
Depends how smart you are and if you have someone experienced helping you.
If someone very experienced is giving you a quick rundown on how Linux works, how to use a shell, how your init system works, how your package manager works, how to compile software, how the filesystem is laid out, etc. You'll learn fast.
Could take anywhere from a few days to years.
I've used Linux myself for several years and consider myself a very advanced user, but still just learned something new today.
At least KWin restarts itself 99% of the time automatically.
Windows explorer crashes more frequently and doesn't restart automatically.
I literally just finished installing paid apps on windows, now I have updated system and everything is ready for work, everything just works and will work for another year before I decide make clean install, why should I bother about linux or viruses if all is about remote control and stuff I have blocked?
>will work for another year before I decide make clean install
githubValveSoftware/Proton
Many games work at least decently well with proton
If I want to install something on Linux, do I have to use code to do it? I can't just download an installer and have it just werk like windows?
I've never had explorer crash
Maybe you should stop downloading viruses
because I hate updating system
There's quite a handful of options to install shit on Linux.
Usually you don't have to download anything and can get 99% of what you want from the snap store/flatpak or repositories your distro comes with.
However there are installable executables like .deb and also standalone "download and run" programs in the form of AppImages.
Short answer: no. Long answer: it depends but still no.
Even in the event you do you use terminal it's something simple like "sudo apt-get install firefox".
>Many games work at least decently well
Not good enough. Needs to be the exact same performance and functionality as Windows.
The rarest exception you might encounter is a program which doesn't provide binaries but depending on your distro and if you look around you might find builds like the Arch User Repository or PPAs.
Software on Linux is typically installed from a package manager.
So instead of going to Firefox's website to download Firefox.exe and install it, you would do something like
sudo apt install firefox
The vast majority of software is installed and handled like this, and it can all be updated at once with one command.
Updating software on Windows is obviously extremely harder, that's why some things have built-in updaters just for Windows users
If the software you want isn't in your repos:
- There may be a third party repo available
- They may have an Appimage or Flatpak avialable, which you download from the web and run, exactly like you download ".exe" files on Windows from the web and run them. RPCS3 for example provides AppImages
- You compile the software from source. This usually isn't hard.
most of shit depends from packages and stores... just don't waste your time, even mac has unified software base
>RPGmaker shit
fuck you this is bullshit.
2 years ago. I hate windows so much I just stopped playing games on PC and just use my PS4 and switch now.
Well given that some guys sucessfully installed loonix on some Tesla, this might need an update. I hope noone tries this on his own and attempts driving with it Jesus Christ...
>you must know which packages going work with your system
>you must download additional stores because shit is outdated most of time in stock store
>you must use console to download shit because it's not in sotre and it's not guarantee to work properly
linux is crap
>Not good enough. Needs to be the exact same performance and functionality as Windows.
No it doesn't.
Many people already will gladly take a small performance hit, and lowered compatibility with games, just so they can use Linux and not be forced to use Windows.
>>you must use console to download [and install] shit
That's literally one of the best things about Linux
I can't believe Windows users are so retarded they install software by downloading and running random binaries they find on websites.
>what are dependencies
AppImages, Snaps, and FlatPaks are all made for normies like you though.
what the fuck are you talking about? if you have never used linux at least don't go spreading literally lies.
>>you must know which packages going work with your system
????????
>>you must download additional stores because shit is outdated most of time in stock store
what???????????????????? I have never installed a "store", what the fuck are you talking about?????
>>>you must use console to download shit because it's not in sotre and it's not guarantee to work properly
that's optional, you can use a GUI but using the terminal is more effective, and easy when you get the hang of it.
>It's fun to install ton of stores and use command line to install stuff
no, I'm sorry
>>It's fun to install ton of stores
stop, this is bullshit.
Man, you don't have to know how to use the fucking terminal, that's optional, but recommended.
Your comment does not address snaps/appimages/flatpaks on top of pre-existing distro-specific installable packages like debs.
I'm sorry your IQ is negative.
Many apps won't work on non deb. based systems brainlet and to deal with is not worth of your time

Tick tock Microsoft.
I'm sure you could find an installer that plays nice animations and tells you that your parents love you while it installs the software for you
>all these software meme lists
yikes
ive been using linux for about 4 years and only really got comfortable with it after 3 years. of course those first three years i used it in conjunction with windows, in which case if that counts i have always been rather comfortable with linux because i always had a choice, and at that didn't use it that often. i made sacrifices, that was the reason i got comfortable with it fulltime, not because it magically became everything i wanted it to be. i decided enough games were playable but obviously not all were, and turns out that was really all i needed because that was all i really used my computer for at the time
>Many apps won't work on non deb. based systems brainlet and to deal with is not worth of your time
what the fuck are you talking about? I have used Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, Void, Fedora and I don't have a clue what are you trying to say.
If you mean literally a .deb, of course a fucking .deb won't work on arch or Fedora, Fedora for example have fucking .rmp, but all the software you can install it trough a GUI or the terminal from your repos, stop spreading literal fake news.
yeah, win10 is not THAT bad, but I'm going to jump to linux as soon as I manage to upgrade my PC and I beat the lazyness/depression I'm feeling so much lately.
but this is what modern home desktop do more or less
Does Dobson know what "arbitrary" means, and if so why does he use it in this context?
>>It's fun to install ton of stores
Repo, not "store".
I only use the official repo.
> use command line to install stuff
Typing
"install software"
Is far easier and faster than going to software's website, downloading a binary, and running it.
It also installs software correctly unlike Windows, because it installs software to your PATH (/usr/bin), and standardized library folders (/usr/lib) that can be found by compilers and other software.
That all you got?
I don't know what you people do, no, serious mode now, I have new asus laptop produced in 2013 and it have dual core and nvidia graphic, windows 10 is working like a charm, and for some reason drivers don't crash like under windows 7 or 8.1
what is wrong with you
Wait, total Leenux brainlet here. So if I want say, Blender, I need to load this store up and search for "Blender" to see if it has it? If it doesn't, I need to load up a different store? I can't just go to the Blender website and download an installer?
That's not a store. That's a GUI for the built in apt/apt-get. It converts what is checked or unchcked into the words the terminal wants after clicking Apply.
Other distros have their own GUIs.
To install blender on Debian based distros, including Ubuntu, you just simply open a terminal and type
sudo apt install blender
That's it, it fully automatically installs it.
Compare that to what Windows users do, which is find a website, go to the download section, and then download/run a binary installer that they go through.
>I'm sure you could find an installer that plays nice animations and tells you that your parents love you while it installs the software for you
KDE has one called Discover. Supports both regular repositories and Snap/FlatPak out of the box.
hope you get better soon user
Teslas already run Linux, that guy just dual booted Tesla's version of Linux with Ubuntu.
thats wrong because different distros have their own repos with the same software, which is something you should keep in mind when you do decide to try linux. if you wanted .deb support you should use the operating system that supports that, aka xubuntu. and even then if you REALLY wanted to, you could install apt in for example arch linux (and you shouldn't want to, because arch + aur rival or maybe surpass *buntu repos but anyways), because after all its all just software with the difference being integration
> I need to load up a different store?
Stop believing on this retard, I don't know what's a fucking store.
>Wait, total Leenux brainlet here. So if I want say, Blender, I need to load this store up and search for "Blender" to see if it has it?
Just search for Blender on the Search bar or more easy:
sudo apt-get install blender
on the terminal.
>I can't just go to the Blender website and download an installer?
Yes you can, but why would you do that? if you can directly download it and install it from your repos, you just have to type sudo apt-get install blender.
Why are Windowsfag so obsessed with this? Why do you guys resist change so much even when it's something better? (By something better I having a repo).
>store
Stop copying pajeet speak, it's called a repository. You can download anything you want from whatever website you want, but using a package manager is simply much more convenient.
>if you wanted .deb support you should use the operating system that supports that
*aka anything debian based
Even then, almost anything can run on almost anything if you compile for source but then you're leaving normie tier. Usually though the packages you want are all over the place for the popular stuff already.
>sudo apt-get install blender
Supposed to just use "apt" for everything now, "apt-get" is deprecated.
when linux can handle the drm that is taking over the industry and/or every pirated copy of said games then I will switch
I haven't used Ubuntu since 2012, I wouldn't know.
one thing i really dont miss from windows are the ads in installers. this is why i dont support flatpak appimages snaps or anything i simply dont trust that it wont become the same shit. ill compile over using that shit
Windows 10 comes with Chocolatey and its own package manager out of the box now.
>People still fall for lelnux baits and believe 'nice' looking screenshots
kek
stay on windows and mac, don't waste your time
>when linux can handle the drm that is taking over the industry
Most Denuvo games do run through Wine/Proton.
Anti-cheat like EAC and Battle Eye is the problem.
>and/or every pirated copy of said games then I will switch
Probably over 95% of your pirated games can run, if not literally 100%.
my fucking gpu died yesterday and I'm not taking my chances with intel graphics on linux, I bet my ass I will run into all sorts of shit.
>how long until you switch
When I don't have to dual boot for a game EVER and the games run at equal or better speed than Windows with no artifacts. So, in 20 years maybe. I'll stick to using linux for my headless servers.
die fucking linustips shill
intel graphics are actually the best off on linux of the three
won't magically multiply their performance though
linux is not for children. stay in windows like the good goys you are, and leave the productivity software for the people that need to get work done
You haven't had to for a while, just GPU passthrough to a Windows VM for anything that doesn't work natively.
Shouldn't be a problem since you're already 1337 with headless servers.
For blender in particular their website does offer a binary for download, so you could very well go there and download it. But if you do that you have to make sure you have all the dependencies blender needs and you need to go to blender's website and download it again whenever a new version comes out, and then make sure the dependencies are up to date again too.
On the other hand, if you just use your package manager's repository(and mind you, any half-decent distro will have stuff like blender on their repos) all the dependencies are verified and downloaded by the package manager and when a new version comes out everything is also updated accordingly. It's way easier than going to the application's website whenever a new version comes out or dealing with a separate updater for each and every application on your system.
Until it's better
Adobe still forces me to use windows.
Yeah and it's shit. It's just automatically download binary installers from the web.
Windows will never have a REAL package manager because of inherently how Windows is designed.
Package managers on Linux work by installing binaries and libraries to standardized directories in /usr
It keeps tracks of all the files, can update seamlessly, your ENTIRE system is based off packages in a central repo
These Windows "package managers" are basically just
wget installer.exe
yes
No idea why and didn't instantly say that, but yes
Maybe a small caveat is that you might not get an update to Blender 10 minutes after Blender dudes announce new version.
This store look at what is available on the servers that distro's maintainers provide.
And it takes few days for distro maintainers to see "o wow, new version of Blender is out, let's check it for broken or shady shit and then make this available for our users"
>tfw no Anthony sexdoll to snuggle while you play games.
I don't like the change because I don't trust the OS to install something I'm not 100% sure of. If I install Blender off the official Blender website I know exactly what I'm getting and what version. If I tell a computer hey go and install Blender I feel like there's less control. What if it installs Blender the smoothie recipe program or something? Do I at least get to choose where to keep it on the HD?

This. Fuckin' hell when did all the zoomers get in here? I was playing vidya on a shit desktop when I was a kid and just happy to get 30 fps. If I can get almost 60 on Linux, I'm a happy camper.
Unfortunately I can't get my mic to sound as good as in Windows no matter what I try. Think I just need to accept that it will never sound good.
Anybody here ever have permanently staticy mic in Linux and manage to fix it? It's a great mic too, but I don't know what else to try. Done everything in the arch wiki yet still gets pretty rough. Think it has to do with the gain but I'm unsure.
>*nix-lets cant even run Arch or Gentoo
You might as well just get a Fag Book Bro running Fag OSeX
literally the first game I checked (twwh2) is listed as "NATIVE" but has completely non functioning launcher (white screen) and terrible performance (around half of windows)
Now you just made me a bit gay
i've met one person irl that runs arch and he's a stereotypical camp fag
have OSeX?
> I don't trust the OS to install something

Jesus Christ, please die.
Intel officially develoeps they're graphics drivers on Linux.
Intel does a ton of work on Linux, if you're not aware.
Open source AMD drivers are actually the best.
You need a motherboard that has proper IOMMU groups for PCI and USB passthrough.
Currently ONLY Intel's HEDT platforms have this, which currently means 2066 socket mobos and CPUs. Which are extremely overpriced.
Some Ryzen boards have proper PCI passthrough, but none have both PCI/USB
You pretending to be a professional movie creator forces you to use Windows

On Windows? Just stop, use ShareX.
On Linux? Use flameshot.
I have. Pretty much have it at nothing. And if I get too loud then it starts getting really peaky and shit. Really frustrating, because everyone still has to crank my volume way up too.
Those are reports for the Windows version of the game running through Proton.
They're also 7 months old.
Native means it natively supports Linux, you can buy the game for Linux...
I'll answer anyway.
>What if it installs Blender the smoothie recipe program or something?
You can read the description of a pacakge using your package manager, so you know what exactly are you installing, you can also search for something like 'audio editor', 'video editor' and I'll show you the options from your repo.
>Do I at least get to choose where to keep it on the HD?
Linux filesystem don't work like, sure you can put the binary whenever you want but by default everything installs to the / partition, more specifically /bin.
Nope, my mic always worked fine in Linux, but then again I have a shitty USB headset made for office use and not some riced up megabass headset for pro-gaming.
Did you try to diagnose what is causing the noise? Played around with pulseaudio settings?
dunno what the best way to diagnose input is.
What sort of input are you putting it through? Do you have the ability to play with sample rate/bit depth in your settings? I'm an audio guy not a linux guy but that all sounds like stuff on either the hardware or conversion side of things, not software side of things.
If you think its gain, try getting some simple recording software or monitoring the mic while you do other stuff. Is it clipping? If it isn't, its not the gain.
Why? Lightshot does the job
If the game is native that means it's been ported to linux and you don't need to use proton at all, moron.
>screenshots
ya es hora?
Just giving you better tools for the same job. I'm surprised people still unironically use light shot.
why not
Could try Pulseaudio noise cancellation.
Add this to /etc/pulse/default.pa

Linux has GUI package managers that not only provide easy af downloads, but also keep ALL your software up-to-date automatically. Think "Windows updates" except instead of updating only the OS it updates ALL your installed software. I don't like to download updates for things because it often breaks them. I only update when I run into a problem I can't deal with. You're making Linux sound less attractive to me by telling me it babies you by constantly changing your shit.
>tfw linux is too based that I can't use IE to download Firefox
huh? All linux distros come with Firefox by default
>I don't like to download updates for things because it often breaks them. I only update when I run into a problem I can't deal with.
I wonder what gave you this mind set... hm...
Input is motherboard on mine. No problems on windows after a driver install. I'll check if it's clipping when I'm home a bit later, but yeah I think it is clipping since it gets terrible when I scream or something when I listen to it through my audio ports.
It was a joke.
There are distros that update slower than others, sometimes only for security-critical reasons.
>have autism
kek
oh you're right. i'll go through my library and check
>You're making Linux sound less attractive to me by telling me it babies you by constantly changing your shit.
Updating it's up to you, you can run an update whenever you want.
I can't into Engirish today.
Linux filesystem doesn't work like that, sure you can put the binary wherever you want but by default it will install to the / (root) partition, more specifically the /bin folder.
If you don't have autism don't use Linux.
Nope, Windows has a proper packaging system based around .appx packages now.
>It just automatically download binary installers from the web.
That's what package managers generally do. Also Windows 10 has a new package format called appx that
>Windows will never have a REAL package manager because of inherently how Windows is designed
I've got pacman installed on Windows and it works exactly the same as it does on linux.
>Package managers on Linux work by installing binaries and libraries to standardized directories in /usr
There's absolutely nothing to enforce that. I can make a .deb that installs files to wherever I want and dpkg won't complain at all. There's nothing magic about packages on Linux, they're glorified tarballs with a manifest file specifying where to copy a file to. Package managers like pacman have been ported to Windows and work exactly the way they do on Linux. Windows 10 also has a new package format called AppX that supports pretty much everything you'd expect from a package format.
>It keeps tracks of all the files
MSI does this too, and Windows will detect other installers to and track where they install things too. How do you think add/remove applications works? Windows does a lot of book-keeping behind the scenes.
>can update seamlessly
