While Rockstar put out a beautiful engine and made a damn great remake of Los Santos, many of the "simulator" qualities of previous games were removed in favor of a more cinematic and action movie on-rails adventure. It doesn't help that the promising multiplayer was ruined by the over-leveraging on shark cards and not really having a viable method of combatting cheaters, and essentially turned into a mobile game on steroids. I think the singleplayer story is a lot more "fun", but between missions there's sparsely anything to do, with a huge reduction in side content and exploratory content to the world.
Like said, even though the map is comfy as fuck to drive through, it's really empty and devoid of things to actually do.

True, it's a great game actually. Better than most.
It's just shit compared to other GTAs though, and other Rockstar games. It's definitely Rockstar's biggest mis-step yet.
But it still is a damn good game and I've put hundreds of hours into it, and will probably still end up playing more of it in the future.

SA excelled in freedom and good map-design along with good mission-variety.
IV excelled in combining the classic GTA formula with upgraded physics and graphics, along with actual good story-telling.

4 did actually have a lot of side-missions, they just weren't marked on the map so a lot of people missed them.
There was also things like stealing cars for Steve and Brucie, Jacobs drug deals. They're all easy to miss though.
Everyone thinks V has so much more content because every little thing is marked on the map, but in reality both games have a similar amount of side-content.

People have modded the physics tweaks into the console versions and it didn't really effect the performance. And like this guy said the shooting and melee is trash compared to IV, and even the 3d era games.
It's extremely weird coming from Max Payne 3 in 2012 expecting V to have similar gunplay, only for it to be total shit for some reason.
At least they somewhat redeemed themselves with RDR2.

I've played every GTA before IV released multiple times, and both IV and V on release day.
