Why do people get mad over stuff like this anyway? If it's in your face about it and takes away from the game then it's bad of course, but having real stuff in a game is pretty cool

For Pikmin it was treated as a "hey look the aliens are taking this shit we throw out that's cute" sort of thing. It wasn't like Scott Pilgrim movie having Coke Zero namesropped and shown every other scene or Power Rangers having a slow cut of Rita eating some Krispy Kreme donuts with the store fully in frame.

Because it fits naturally in the setting of the world with mini aliens from another planet taking old shit from our planet. It fits seamlessly within the gameplay and plot.

Having your Pikmin carry a generic giant battery without the recognizable branding isn't nearly as endearing.

Because it was cool to find a mundane thing you recognized and then see how Olimar interpreted it as an ancient artifact.

Most of the brands in Pikmin 2 had nothing to really gain from advertising in it (8 year olds don't give a crap about shoe polish). It was to fit in the theme of Olimar being on Earth without ever knowing about it. It was one of those rare well-done 4th wall breaks.

So which way did money move to make this possible - did Nintendo seek out and pay companies to put their shit in Pikmin 2, or vice versa?

Pretty much this. I can see food product placements being effective because that shit works on a lot of people, but nobody’s going to run out and buy Duracells just because they saw it in a game. Not to mention it’s a brand that’s already so prevalent that it probably won’t convert a lot of people; most players likely already use them anyway.

They did it with the Chibi-Robo game for 3DS too

Usually companies pay to have their shit in stuff but I imagine people have negotiated contracts where neither party pays anything because it's mutually beneficial. I know another thing that happens is sometimes things are put in movies just because the company owns them. Sony was really bad about this for awhile with everyone having Vaio laptops and phones when it was a shit brand that no one in the real world every used.

That shit was actually pretty cool cuz it wasn't too common. I remember when The original Sims had a Pepsi machine as free DLC it was fuckin cool cuz there wasn't even an actual soda machine in the game until like an expansion or two later.

Because it's used in a clever way to drive home that the Pikmin planet is Earth, and that humans explicitly lived there. There's no scene of Olimar going

How successful is Pikmin (game sales) and how come you don't see Pikmin making cameos in other Nintendo series? Like for instance in say Legend of Zelda Minish Cap?

But product placement can just be coincidental. If you're trying to build a world and tell us that these are people in this world, you have products. We as people consume products. How awkward would it be if everyone was drinking unmarked cans of soda, or going to nameless fast food restaurants? They wouldn't feel real, and nor would the world if products were simply non-existent. Would Pikmin feel more like the Earth if you just picked up label-less batteries and blank bottlecaps?
