I can only assume that they dumped everything they had into the switch launch and first year games. Then everything finished up at relatively the same time and they were stuck with games starting development from scratch, hence the drought. And eventually they'll be caught back up and on a regular schedule

Before you ask, the render on the right comes from promo material for New Leaf's 2016 Welcome amiibo update. That particular style of AC renders was first used in amiibo Festival and is now the main style for the series' 3D promo material from now on. No more in-game models with higher quality textures like every game before.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released on time but I honestly wish they had delayed it 6 months, that way they'd have ironed out all the game-crashing glitches, launched with NG+ available, maybe had the time to re-record the most egregiously phoned in dub lines, improved the performances in handheld mode, maybe even add in a collectopaedia and bestiary. Honestly, if the other option is games launching unfinished and buggy, I'm glad Nintendo isn't above delaying their launches.
