Playing through expert mode and going full magic armour + magic weapons and holy fuck I feel so gimped compared to melee. Is there any reason to play as a mage pre-moon lord? I do about 1/4 the dps of melees at my level and have about 70 less defense. They even have range with all their swords have projectiles.

Magic is cool as hell though, I don't remember exactly when it starts being truly goat but by the time you reach Moon Lord you should long have started having access to cool armor buffs that heal you or give you even more damage off magic damage.
