Did you know your video game discs actually have small holes in them for each bit of information and dont just magically contain information in the foil itself?

That's why it's the only solution for backups because tape and disk looses magnetism over time

Recordable discs use a special ink instead, not pits and grooves.
Tape will easily outlast your average disc, especially recordable ones. Tape or disc backup with reasonable redundancy scrubbed regularly is the way to go.

never heard of CD's you fucking zoomer? it stands for circular disc.

Or you can just use the cloud, goy.
Our RAID10 arrays will keep your data secure and we will make sure to replace any failing drives on demand.

>Holes
No they don't, they don't go through the disc, they're pits.

Pretty fcking hi tech if you ask me

>circular
you what

Hole as in pothole.

If you watch a CD carefully you'll notice that they are actually circular.

Hole isn't an abbreviation of pothole. Potholes aren't holes.

Holes don't have to go all the way through.

What does CD even stand for.

compact disc you dum dum

So if data is stored in these little holes, does that mean that each bit takes up physical space and if you had enough you could hold a mass of raw information in your hands?

CD disc

Shut up.

CrossDresser

It's still just a representation of data, might as well pick up a book.

wait so it isnt magic? then whats so magical about the 90s-2000s?

classic DVD

Yes user, you can hold holes in your hand.

Well they should fill the holes with more data, I don't want to pay for no holes

So, some cunt who's probably at least 20yo doesn't know what a hole is and gets mad we he's called out on his faggotry. You should kys my dude.

That's what I told your mom.

More of a strap-on man, eh?

has anyone tried to making a usable disc from a material that isn't plastic?

I was amazed when i found out that you can tell if a CDR has data on it just by looking at it closely

glass would easily work i think

>can never dig a hole in the ground, it will never go trough all the way
autism ruined another dream.

the only solution for backup is constant replication, our biology is also evident of that

>He fell for the physical meme
Enjoy your rot

>That's why it's the only solution for backups because tape and disk looses magnetism over time
But that's wrong, literally everything important on the planet is backed up on tapes.

All your medical files, banking, social security, literally every byte of critical data is backed up and stored on pic related.

>it stands for circular disc

It stands for cylindrical (data) diskette, you absolute pleb.

Don't believe his lies. That's a picture of an 8-track. Probably a Creedence Clearwater Revival one.

>don't use disks, use the cloud!!
You realize that's just also disks but in somebody else's computer instead, you dipshit?

Attached: 1527255394362.png (600x600, 458K)

Wait, cloud storage is just another HHD somewhere else?

how are you this underage

of course not, it's magic

Yea, in the sky.

Bad Moon Rising is actually about the death of physical media CONFIRMED. The 'bad moon' is a scratched up stinky old CD.

Cut Dick, the center hole resembles the jew tool used to cut your dick, that's why you should always pirate stuff

What the fuck do think RAID10 arrays are, if not disks in a computer?

Nah, don't listen to that retard. Your data's safe in those stratocumuli

Yes, in heaven, only Jesus will take care of your porn and games.

Wow who knew hole technology had such far reaching and practical application

Attached: holes.jpg (915x506, 62K)

About 20% of the data on the disc is for error correction

I'm 18 you retard.

Computer Donut because of the shape.

I like to play games and record myself playing them in one hour chunks and then I upload them to Youtube as unlinked videos for preservation. That way in years to come my kids can watch me play through games they'll never have the chance to play while they're growing up instead of watching the other shit on Youtube.

Are you telling me that those Lets Plays won't be preserved?

Why aren't we trying to parse data to and from DNA? You could hold like a terabyte in a strawberry.

Because you can already hold a terabyte in something smaller than a strawberry

Its not that the holes contain data in the sense you are talking about, but the location and pattern of the pits is read by the drive laser which is able to differentiate the height between a pit or nonpit and feeds them as 1s or 0s.

Actually I looked it up. You can hold 215 petabytes per gram of DNA. So strawberries are definitely the future.

Yeah, but for how long, how resistant is it to errors and what's the read speed?

You need an efficient method of reading and writing data and I doubt DNA (or more accurately, molecular memory) is going to be practical any time soon, since transfer speeds, including global communication, tend to be the bottle neck more so than raw storage space

Furthermore a strawberry is mostly water, and if you change its DNA it's no longer a strawberry

I miss moot

I miss (you)~

Reminder that's he's gay now.

This guy is clearly underage and mask it's age, JANITOR PLEASE.

He was always gay.

Cool

This post is Dunning-Kruger in action

Nice try faggot.
