That, to me, means they're not actually good. But I guess that's why you used quotations. All the classic osts have catchy memorable songs. A lot of these hyped up games have weak themes.

the only songs I remember from it are the main theme, first level theme, Propeller Knight's stage, Mole Knight's stage, and the cute dance jingle with the green woman.

they aren't memorable, but not being memorable =/= bad, that's where I think people misinterpret the idea of what makes a GREAT soundtrack. A good soundtrack is a memorable soundtrack on top of being well produced, Shantae music is only well produced, the songs sound good and that's about it. I would agree in saying the songs sound good, but compare what are considered the most memorable songs in Shantae to some of the most memorable video game songs ever made and the Shantae music gets absolutely obliterated.

there's a lot of stuff that goes into it, I'm no expert, but I'd say stuff like:
concise melodies, not overproduced song(as in don't put in a million instruments and backing tracks to make your song seem better), rhythmic structures that are easy to follow along(even the most insane rhythm sections have lines that are easy to follow), in the case of an entire soundtrack I'd say the most important thing is actually making sure your pieces stand out from each other(Jake Kaufman writes a lot of songs that sound exactly the same sometimes and that's part of the reason why I'd argue a lot of his music isn't actually that memorable). These are just some things.

okay so give me examples of shit sounding the same then.

it's usually basic small stuff like the same beats and chord progressions backing a lot of his music(this happens a lot in Mighty Switch Force 1 and 2's soundtracks and occasionally in HGH), his interpretation of "Arabian Scales" makes him do the same freaking descending line in a lot of music(hard to actually show since because of how short the line actually is and linking a song wouldn't really help, but if you were to sit through the PC or HGH soundtrack, you'd probably know what I was talking about), and especially this point, but it also REALLY does not help that he's used the same instruments for all of his soundtracks since he was freed from the shackles of writing 8-bit music(seriously, experiment with more instruments Kaufman this is getting ridiculous)
