I don't understand GRRM. I understand Tolkein because it was idealism and high fantasy pulling on an amalgamation of Northern and Western mythos. I understand Sapkowski because it's cynicism and sarcasm which is expected from Eastern Europe and it's folklore. I understand Howard because it's sword and sorcery approach is able to keep "high adventure" in a grounded setting.

But I cannot for the life of me understand GRRM.

Give it up. His books read like a script anyway, and GoT drags it's fucking feet so much it's starting to become a pain in the ass keeping up.

And marketing is the reason.

It's similar to what Alan Moore did with bargain bin superheroes. Once you decide that your work is going to be a "deconstruction" aka making everything edgy, then the course is clear since you have an almost infinite pool of tropes to fuck around with and subvert.
It also helped that the asoiaf's world is writen as more grounded instead of fanciful (like WoT is, for instance), that makes it appear more realistic and less cheesy

It's descriptive to normies. Like I said before, his books read like a fucking TV or Movie script. They're very overrated books.

His prose improved a ton by ADWD. There was more poetic structure to this sentences and there was less emphasis on dialogue carrying everything.

However, even Ernest Hemingway had a way of just letting dialogue carry his books.

I hope this is false. Miyazaki does a great job in interweaving gameplay concepts and plot, they should not let a guy who knows shit about game design to do the writing.
