I made the switch to Linux Mint earlier this year. I still don't run it for everything, but with Proton improving all the time, it's getting easier and easier to run games natively. It's nice having a clean OS as well

Only trouble is I've used only Windows for years, so I'm a little more lost on the file structures and how to execute programs, going back to a CLI for stuff is difficult when you've been used to Powershell at best.

Those games that have native Linux versions you'll be able to download without paying for them again. Your Windows only games will hopefully work through Proton (Valve's compatibility layer), which is improving all the time.

I've tried a ton of Linux distributions in the past and it's honestly fine for everyday desktop and browsing bullshit. Maybe better than Windows, thanks to all the cute little workspace crap you can do. Distributions aren't all that different, I'd just get Ubuntu because it's braindead easy and stable and whatever you don't like about it you can just fucking ditch. It's so easy to uninstall and replace things you don't like about it, even parts of the operating system itself. Not like Windows.

Here's the thing, though: compatibility is still garbage. Games will not work. People who say you can get most games working perfectly in Wine with a little tweaking are fucking lying. Some stuff will take a ton of configuration and others won't work for you at all. Everything takes a huge performance hit, sometimes even ancient games. Unless you have extremely narrow interests and all the games you like happen to work well, you won't be playing games like you used to. If you haven't used Linux on your main machine, you don't know what it's like to want to play a nostalgic RPG/Game Maker game or new flavor of the month and just be completely fucked.

I had problems with basic programs, even. Famitracker glitched out horribly in Wine. Even native open source multiplats had bullshit performance issues: VBA/VBA-M ran like stuttering trash on my relatively modern machine (though I guess you should be using mGBA nowadays). Audacity was unusable laggy bullshit thanks to Linux' awful fucking sound API issues. Mednafen had audio hiccups too, I think. And back when Flash wasn't dead it choked on that, too.

I don't hate Linux. I've tried to switch on multiple occasions and I might try again when W7 reaches EoL. But every time I did, people were saying it's a compatibility utopia and every time they were fucking wrong

WINE is better. DXVK exists, which literally converts directX into Vulkan, and Proton already works with generally most games as long as you use experimental drivers. The ONLY thing that might possibly give you a headache, is installing GPU drivers, but literally just follow an internet guide and copy paste some terminal commands

And it's all built in to steam now. You literally just click one checkbox and then try to launch a game and it'll works 80% of the time (this percent is getting bigger by the month)

Mpd+ncmpcpp is pretty good once you get used to the controls, looks fucking slick too and is highly customizable. Don't have the screens at the moment but with some fiddling it looks like 90s cyberpunk and works flawlessly. This stuff was what i used back when I was mainly on osx and I never was much of a command line guy so if I could do it anyone can.

It does work but it varies from game to game and if your friend never used terminal in his life you will get tired of the game before he finishes setting wine up. Also ror2 isn't that greatly optimised so I wouldn't even bother unless he has the newest shit with decent dedicated gpu.

There is a config file and you edit it all you want, not much different than setting up some game settings in an ini. It's a terminal application so it's not that user friendly in a modern sense, obviously, but whole weekend is stretching it, a few hours tops if you never done that before, moreover I'm pretty sure there should be ready to use configs somewhere, if not wiki explains what all the lines mean etc.
Look, to be fair even foobar comes pretty meh out the box, it's just after so many years everyone already knows where shit is and sets it up quickly, this is the same shit just less clicking more typing, and it's interesting in it own way and you get a sleek music player at the end. You can even flex a bit. Mines was at MacBook so whenever I wanted to use it outside you wouldn't believe how many people were surprised and interested by it, it really does look cool, you'll just need to get a basic understanding of it and terminal in general to use it, but it's R E A L L Y basic.
The only downside is that someone other than you who sees this shit for the first time will have trouble using it, so like, if anyone wants to switch a track at some weed and chill get together and it's your setup playing, you will have to get your ass up and do it yourself. That's all I can think of.

Because the acceptable PC gaming solutions going forward are:

Linux for native games
+ Wine/DXVK for Windows games
or
+ Windows 7/10 VM with passthrough GPU

Only a fool would give Windows direct access to network hardware. Older Windows need the protection that a VM sandbox can provide, especially once they're past their end of life date and no longer getting security updates. New Windows needs to be protected from itself and denied the ability to phone home, or update itself without notice.
