Masterminds were shit toward the higher end of the power scale because set bonuses had no affect on pets. So while everyone else with a good build was buff your pets just died and did nothing useful.
It was okay at first, then came the balance changes, and then some other dumb shit I can't remember, and then it went F2P and you had to pay to unlock costume parts and enter dungeons. Not just a one off payment either, pretty sure you had to repeatedly buy dungeon tokens or some shit, not even a subscription.

I played champions since beta all the way up until sometime after On Alert update. There had been literally no content besides loot boxes since then. Maybe some new world Invasion things or an event in a specific Zone that rotates but literally no major new content. To me the game was fun in terms of combat. You could Haymaker someone across the room then use an iron Lariat and drag them right back to you Scorpoion style and then punched them away again.

This. There was a LOT of slog and grind in the game for most of its run that only really started getting improved towards the end. Hundreds upon hundreds of office building missions.. crawling through miles of Orenbega tunnels trying to find that one last little CoT asshole hiding somewhere..
But there's some quality about CoH you just can't describe. We use the word "comfy" around here far too much but there's just something about the feel of logging in, the city feeling like it's living and breathing, the chatter of all those ambient noises, all those different zones to roam to and things to fight and encountering strange guys in crazy costumes.. I've never been a superhero/capeshit fag, and all the other games in this motif I tried afterwards have been shit, but there's just SOMETHING about CoH.

Combat had more depth than other capeshit games, the character creator was pretty powerful for a game of that age. Mentor/sidekick system allowed you to group and play with friends regardless of their level, so you can enjoy content together. Community was pretty cool, for the most part (see Leandro and his faggot friends for an example of shit-tier community members); they would hold regular costume contests.
Overall, I think the game was the best capeshit MMO out of all the options we have/had. While the gameplay will probably feel dated compared to something like DCUO or Champions, I would say it's still more fun to play overall.

Knocking a mobster off a building and have him not only not taking any extra damage from a 50 foot fall, but then DYING as i turned super jump on and fell down to try to finish him. If I remember right, you could get about 10% def and 10% resist with them. By themselves those bonuses wouldn't make a huge difference, but if you had ran something like demons/time (demons had some resist buffs from one of the tier 2 and time has def and accuracy debuffs) you could build them pretty solid.

Guys, I never played city of heroes. Why'd it die out? You'd think a hero mmo would do pretty well with the popularity of hero movies.
The game was just fun to play really. Character creation was in depth for its time, and you could reroll new toons (as they were often called) over and over. The best part may have been the community. There were always costume contests in Atlas park, and supergroups often recruited for the sake of social benefits and messing around. There were always RPers. Sometimes I got guys in groups that had their character set to say certain things through macros when they used certain abilities. You would happen across a group of guys all standing in some room in some park or on a building having a supergroup meeting, all in character. Shit was wacky, but endearing. It was hack when MMOs didnt just rely on instant qs for content and asking till one pops. Good times.

Still missing some big pieces to the puzzle; without them, supposedly, it'll take longer for private servers to be playable. If Leandro gives us everything, we'll probably see a private server in the next couple months; otherwise, assuming what I said is true about the partial source code drop being salvageable, maybe we'll get to play in a year or so.

I think letting the player decide is better. I think before CoX retail died while F2P, there were XP boosts you could buy for cash. I'm guessing you can make it so players can set their own XP growth rate, obviously capped to a server-wide maximum of maybe 5x.
Level differences don't matter all too much due to mentoring/sidekicking anyway.

TP had good utility though. Teleporting to boss with mass recall, using teleport ally to place a body for nuke+mutation, saving people with tp ally, porting around low level sidekicks

City of Villains started as a standalone game that connected to CoH, but it was eventually merged into one package. They're not really like Horde and Alliance since you could freely switch between them (eventually). The servers will be copies of the live server at shutdown.

Around level 20 or so you can choose to switch >don't like being a hero >do a few specific missions that are villainous in nature and become a Vigilante which now lets you cross between Paragon City (from City of Heroes) and the Rogue Isles (from City of Villains) >can now choose to either become a full pledged Villain or go back to being a Hero or if you want just stay as a Vigilante >the same goes for Villains who can become Rogues then Heroes or stay Rogue >also missions to go back to being a Hero/Villain if you decide differently >can only do this once every 5 days or so though >Going Rogue lets you start as a Praetorian (its in the lore) then at level 20 you choose if you want to be a Hero or Villain but can always decide to switch if you want so CoX is just easier to say since they all sort of blend together now thanks to Going Rogue

Yes, because they were internally merged. You had all the City of Heroes content if you installed City of Villains. You just couldn't access the City of Heroes content if your subscription wasn't for both. It's like DLC today on multiplayer games. Even if you don't buy the DLC, you still have to download it for compatibility reasons. It's so that the devs don't have to manage multiple separate branches of the game code.

Probably not in the way you want. Travel powers slow down dramatically while in combat. You can SORT OF run real fast past an enemy and activate an attack that will hit once you're already past him, but he'll do the same to you. It uses old MUD-style combat rules, if you're in range when a melee skill is activated, that skill will still hit no matter how far away you are when the animation finally finishes (and vice versa for enemies vs you, so it CAN be dangerous to constantly run through large groups unless you also have defensive powers active).
But you do run really damn fast with super speed. Ideally you turn it off when you're in combat and back on after each group cause it's a huge endurance hog. The same pool also gets you Hasten which is the primo cooldown reduction power.

Fear Cloak and stacking Dark Melee -ToHit already covers up the missing defence. Syphon Life's already down to 3.8 seconds cooldown with the +7.5% endurance proc from Panacea. Dark Consumption and Conserve Power can also fill in between the passive +10% end procs from physical perfection if things get tight.

Is there any current mmo out there that has the kind of immediate overkill stuff like this? I remember asherons call 2, one of the human mage classess got a defense debuff that could make bossess die like twice as fast, you would cast it and see the health bar just start dropping.
But modern games all seem to be a bunch of 5% here, 10% there, and no real support classes that just show up and suddenly everyone is happy because the entire play experience has radically shifted into hyperdeath.

Yes, it is possible, but it hinges on the coding skills/modeling skills/autism levels of the fanbase and server owners.
I dunno that it killed it but it probably put a damper on it. MA farming was basically the same thing, you'd go into a mission that was designed to have tons of enemies packed all over the place and just fulcrum shift and nuke them down.
With the source code and the power of the whole community behind it, could we end up gaining even more than just what we lost? New content, even updated models and textures?

Man I don't care what anyone says cox was actually pretty feature heavy and ahead of the curb for an mmo as old as it was, all the little unique things it did that no other mmo has been able to do is kind of silly. Rng generated mission maps that made no sense. physics on enemy npcs so you could just blast them off of things. allowing you to essentially minmax and break bits of the game. Masterminds alone were so feature heavy that they still haven't been surpassed. you can outright control their positioning individually like you're some starcraft 2 autist adjusting their stances to get that sweet defense bonus or just pull sit off of you while you run away
My problem is I cant turn at all unless Im standing still. Nobody will help me ingame
