Honestly, im considering just emulating my childhood at this point (SNES/N64/PS1) since the only games I have relevant interest in lately are MK11, Witcher 3 (Still havent played it), Stardew Valley, and Pathfinder Kingmaker

The Witcher 3 is a pretty great game so if you haven't played that I'd recommend it. Or the mass effect trilogy. The first two are great and if you get the mod for thr third one that starts the Citadel DLC after the final mission it makes the game less shit.
For timesink I'd say borderlands 2 or even Destiny 2. It has enough content now to be a real game and has better shooting than borderlands. Though I don't know about pricing since the handsome collection is like 15 burgers

honestly I never played the first one but the second one has a lot of charm to it and can be a pretty fun and mindless game. There's a lot of stuff to do if you get tired from combat like home decor and music. And the premium shit isn't really intrusive at all

If your complains come from Edmund ruining the funny synergies after balancing them try the Antibirth mod for Rebirth. It's more broken (in a good way) than the official DLC.
