My buddy is a console and macfag without a bone. I'd like to recommend this to him since we used to play contra 3 and gun star heroes together but I'm worried the game would run kind of crappy

Gameplay starts slow but gets good as it gives you more tools, just remember you can flick movement to animation cancel auto attack to make it go faster.

If I'd give my brutally honest opinion, I'd say its a light 8/10. There are a lot of good things and bad things about the game:

The good:
>late game combat is one of the most varied and customizable systems in JRPGs
>large party size and plenty of character customization
>beautiful art direction and layout of cities, dungeons, and landscapes
>high content variety with lots of side quests, mini-games, and other activities
>amazing sound design and soundtrack
>the lore and connection to the first game is pretty great

The bad:
>early game combat sucks and is horribly slow and repetitive
>tutorials can't be viewed beyond their initial appearance and often show content that won't relevant to the player until much later in the game
>English dub is inferior to most previous Xeno titles
>Field Skills hinder exploration and quests
>the humor and characterization of party members is not for everyone
>side content can occasionally be subject to a lot of open world game tedium and repetition
>character art direction lacks cohesiveness and direction

It's not as good as the first Xenoblade, but if you're patient and don't mind a grindy open world game, then you'll get some fun out of it. I played it for around 170 hours and I don't regret it.

It is intended, just very weird to see in a game like this. I do have to say though that the 3D models came out much better than I expected, even with all the different art styles.

If anything, Monolithsoft has now a good catalogue of artstyles they can choose from as they all work rather well in their own way.

I haven't finished Dark Souls or MHGU yet, so pretty much just that aside from a MP game like Splatoon.
Waiting for SwSh, hoping DQ XI and God Eater 3 are fun. Don't really know what else is coming out.

If it was just Blades, I'd be fine with it, but when NPCs of the same race as a playable character look nothing like the latter, that's when I think there's a problem. Nia barely looks like other Gormotti even in Driver form. Morag and Zeke look nothing like other people from their home Titans. Vandham barely resembles an Urayan. The list goes on, to the point where only Nopon and Acedians skirt by with a noticeable amount of design consistency.

You do have the right of it there. Unfortunately Xeno games have never really been consistent with NPCs other than the ones present in important quests.
If anything it is a step up from XCX when it comes to the most common NPC models. XCX did achieve better results with keeping looks more consistent between characters.

It's the risk of using different artists for different parts of development. While I personally didn't mind it too much I see where you're coming from and I agree with your opinion about the clashing styles.

Should I get a pro controller? It seems like it's better quality than the joycons but on the other hand I seriously can't imagine going back to a regular controller after playing with separated joycons, particularly in Splatoon.

I can get any of the indies on PC, have played BOTW on Cemu already (didn't like it that much desu) and the Pro Controller sucks for anything 2D. It also seems like Yuzu is making a lot of progress lately.
Maybe, maaaaaybe Persona 5 would convince me if it doesn't come to PC, I know I can emulate it but I've been a big fan since P4G and having P5 on another handheld just feels right.

Not all of them were outsourced. Takahashi mentioned how adapting all of the different art syles were good experience for Monolithsoft's staff in an interview, so some of the characters outside of the main cast were definitely handled in house.

I could never get into XC2. Environment skill checks were dumb. Blades took too much micro and it felt like they were just throwing in too many systems for no reason. Seeing the future is also a great mechanic and they threw it out after one game. Oh well.

Managing Blades isn't complicated, it's just pointlessly cumbersome given the shitty interface.

I think the general idea was that the merc missions were there so you could continue filling out all the charts of the blades you aren't using in the background, but going in and out of the menu every 30 minutes to check on that shit got old incredibly fast. And it doesn't even work for every node.

I’d actually recommend the Switxh for indie games over other systems since it’s fairly powerful and portable and can start up nearly any indie game really quickly so you don’t need to dedicate yourself to it too much

Tried playing Romancing SaGa 2, the default RPG Maker-tier presentation, enemies and combat didn't cut it for me so I've dropped it. Tried playing Tales of Vesperia but the combat and generic chibi overworld are turning me off. I've already played and enjoyed Xenoblade 2 and Ys VIII but I think that might be it for me as far as JRPGs go on the Switch, both SaGa and Vesperia came greatly recommended by Yea Forums and I just can't enjoy them. Feels like I've fallen for a meme and wasted my money.
