Rank by combat points instead of turn count.
Combat points are awarded for taking out enemy units and completing mission objectives.
Combat points are subtracted for your units getting incapacitated or killed.
Turn count also contributes to combat points total, but isn't a sole factor.
Also, the game should have some proper GRAFIX and especially animations. The animations are as stiff as in a Bethesda game.

Everyone says this but they don't know what exactly do they mean. There's a beach episode in VC1 but people freak out if another VC game ever does it. Sympathetic villains, fiery squadmates/tension that have a good resolution like Isara+Rosie+Largo in 1, and a likable main character. That's what I want the most, plus optional ending paths like VC3 did for the marriage wife.

I kinda wish there was a way to use the non-main characters more without losing extra turns from not using the main characters who give extra turns

You don't have to control them, just drop them at the start of the game on the map.
You usually can deploy 10 people anyway, so you have 6 slots to work with. Plus you always want to use the tank when available.

Deploying without them is Hard mode in your mind, justify it that way.

That does make it better in a way, I'd see it as wasted resources but at the same time I'm unlocking squad stories and liking alot of the side characters/squad members

Yeah I usually just deploy main characters at the base camp and leave them there to defend it.

Wouldn't DLC and patches fix your VC4 problems? Even VC1 could've had scout rush patched out by shifting stamina values but SEGA sat on it even on the REMASTER too.

perhaps, but I feel like the overwhelming strength of boosted shocktroopers and the apc, and to a lesser extent grenadiers and group firing lancers is a deep set game design problem
