It was Squall's actually, his entire identity was warped by holding onto memory of "Sis" whom and whose name he didn't even remember which eventually evolved into his big ass abandonment issue. It was also a bit of Irvine's arc as he was only one who still remembered their times in orphanage and seemed to have hold onto his crush for Selphie.
The thing about FF VIII is that Squall is a main character in every sense of the word, it's his story and he is first FF characters whose thoughts we can literally read and it was all about him trying to let go of childhood memories that turn him into emo. A lot of storytelling in FF VIII is very low key.

Post-PS1 FFs have this weird thing where they focus way too hard on a few aspects of the writing to the detriment of everything else. 10 and 13 both actively hurt the journey by getting stuck on the circumstances (it's a pilgrimage/they're outlaws so we have to force the player down a linear path as they rush to complete the task) while 15 is so stuck on Noctis being depressed and his friendship that they forgot to write a story and have him do things.
FF8 raises way more questions than FF7 does. In FF8 when you re-play it you realize that nobody is a hero in that game. Everyone is a fucking douchebag. Especially Squall, Selhpie, Zell, Quistis. They are mercenaries that do dumb shit because they were ordered to do so, and they didn't question it. In any other FF they would be the mindless sub-boss before the final boss.
I explained it to myself that items are literally magic and you need the GFs to "cast" them during combat.
Squall gets iced (literally) trying to assassinate Ultemica. Everything after that is quite literally his final fantasy.
I honestly think that's a bit of a point too, there is a bit of a role reversal going on in a way that in literally every other FF game Ultimecia and Seifer would be the good guys.

The first time I read this theory it blew my mind. Then I sort of filed it away in my brain as a cool take on the events that's probably not true. But sitting here thinking about it again, fuck, I don't know. I was thinking, as cool as it sounds you would have to be crazy to put that kind of dark twist into your game...as crazy as a Japanese video game designer in the 90's. So, yeah. Not only were you too retarded to grasp 8's plot, you are also too retarded to grasp 6 and 7's plot points.
Real talk though, it would've been clever if they addressed the fact that Squall was very fatally wounded and very nearly died. Near-death experiences are things that change people, in a movie All About Lily Chou-Chou one of main characters Shūsuke Hoshino nearly drowns and that experiences made him re-evaluate his life though, more negatively, he became a bully, formed a gang, watched his former best friend masturbate, forced one of his classmates into prostitution, one who didn't he ordered his gang to rape and etc.
But basically such an experience would've been interesting to explore in Squall's story arc regarding opening up to people, if it was viewed from that angle you could make a more logical bridge towards him starting to like Rinoa. But it was used only to explain the change in locations unfortunately.

I know it's not technically the same thing as ruling it out, but that honestly makes me feel a little better about the entire theory. It means that they didn't intend for Squall to be dead, but also recognize that it's a pretty fucking cool theory. Best of both worlds.

Slephi regresses and behaves childishly. Zell develops aggressive tendencies and an easily bruised ego. And Squall becomes a nihilist.
