The protagonist (or the antagonist) uses a Japanese sword

>the protagonist (or the antagonist) uses a Japanese sword.

Why is this so cliche?

coolest sword
followed by gladius

same reason western developers give their characters western weapons.
Fucking stupid question

It looks cool
>b-but actually they're shit and were used to cut down naked peasant
No one cares

Fuck you. Sabers are where it's at.

Attached: swordfu.jpg (1024x800, 36K)

Man, why are sabers decidedly a "bad guy" weapon in JRPGs? I can't think of a single protag that uses a saber.

Because Japan makes these games, what did you fucking think?

It sounds natural for japanese games to include japanese weapons.
On the other hand I would like to see a game with less known european weapons like the "swiss saber".

Attached: AA_SwissSaber03_s.jpg (800x500, 30K)

I dunno, honestly. Perhaps
>Japs and Ruskies were at war over 100 years ago => Ruskies used sabres => sabres == evil

>japanese person uses a japanese sword
>western person uses a western sword
>person uses a sword
wtf japan?

Because most people like the familiar.

Attached: chronotrigger_character_crono2.png (816x1328, 1.31M)

Which bad guy are you referring to?

>same reason western developers give their characters western weapons

But the katana is pretty common in the
Western games, depending on setup.

>Get motivated by this game to go full RISING SUN and practice with a samurai sword.
>Weaboo in my room for decades swinging it around
>Finally go to a martial arts class
>learn I've been doing it wrong for years and need to unlearn a ton of bad habits.

because sabers were mostly a military/cavalry thing i guess. and in these games the protagonist is always a rebel and the antagonist a military type guy

And european swords are fairly common in jap games

I can't think of anything in particular, but I'm pretty sure I've seen mooks with sabers a few times.

It's pretty much the first katana he drew, but oh well, thanks for letting me know.

Attached: 2e5911e95201d712a4c95854a395e947.jpg (2480x3508, 1.23M)

On the top of my head I can only think of the fuhrer from fma that use a military saber but it's a western inspired setting

So what's the coolest non-Western sword out there?

>character uses a weapon common for the time period

Ugh how unoriginal

>2019
>Still no vidya protag that uses a Ball Head War Club as a weapon

Attached: 50.67.83_bw_SL1.jpg (1536x1128, 497K)

Could you provide some examples because right now I can't muster any memories of baddies having western sabers. Except maybe the general in Devil Summoner : Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army

It’s simple and aesthetic. You don’t have to do a bunch of convoluted shit to get the design right.

I think AssCreed 3 hs them but I'm not sure.

Swords are for fags and this thread confirms it. Real men use hammer and axe

White people always bitch about Asian tropes. Why is this such a cliche?

my brother of african descent

Why are the Korean swords not popular while that country is the biggest outputter of MMO genre?

Unbalanced as fuck, supposed to be used form a top a horse.

Single-edged swords are fuckin cool

shit gets to me everytime

are there any games that accurately implement stances and moves of different weapon and fighting styles?

While cliche I'll take a katana over MGFUGHUEG GLOWYANIMUSWORD any day.

Nioh.
Possibly Bushido Blade?? It's been a while.

If anything there are not enough games with japanese swords.

You see more katana in western games than you do eastern.

What even are some korean swords? Don't they pretty much use copies of chinese and even japanese swords?

Straight single-edged specifically. It's just so nice to look at.

I'd rather a good shovel or hatchet than a sword desu

Attached: images (13).jpg (570x407, 10K)

Vyse nigga

If i remeber correctly they used a straight katana. It was slightly longer and thicker (like from the edge to the back of the blade). They're actually pretty cool.

Cool artist

Those were made by chinks first user.

Sorry I don't live in swamps and would rather have a killing tool than a landscaping one

Koreans couldn't even invent a language that sounds good.

Sexy sword. I'd use it

I didn't know this was a real weapon. Just thought it was unique to the water tribe in Avatar. Neat

are swords the first tool made with the express purpose of killing other humans?

>Shovel
>Not a killing tool
lmao

that was probably the club

Yeah okay Chiri

Patrician choice as well.

woah easy there, mate

I don't think that artist knows how meele weapons work

Hold on good citizen of the empire. That looks like a sword to me.

Nah, just a long knife mate

When was the last time you saw a protagonist use a big, unwieldy weapon like a hammer or a mace?

Pointy stick was made for hunting animals first though.

What's the difference between a sword and a knife?

kinda

Whoever drew this is a hack
Absolute garbage, terrible anatomy, face that makes anime look realistic
When will game designers realise that women don't look like this?
I want women that looks like me: 320lbs, slender figure but with some curves for the boys, feminine facial features, but not ridiculously small like this harlot with a nose smaller than a grown man's thumb and eyes larger than pennies

!!!

Attached: Katsuwo.jpg (1920x1080, 215K)

but clubs and pointy sticks are for bashing open things like coconuts and hunting animals first, which ALSO could be used to kill humans
i'm asking what tool is made to kill humans, swords can't really be used to hunt game or hammer things or bash things or farm

so what was it

I'm not a fan of the anatomy myself but BRO, you gotta chill

Eating raw bread? Why?

>320lbs
>slender figure
This is obviously bait. Even landwhales aren't that deluded.

Are Europeans the only ones who made straight swords? Every single """foreign""" sword I've ever seen, from Arabian to Japanese, is at least partially curved. What's up with that?

>When will game designers realise that women don't look like this?

Arabians used straight swords as well before the turks made curved blades popular. The same for indian swords. There are also african straight swords, though I don't know what their inspiration was.

Sauce on this semen demon?

based Europeans actually taking advantage of their hilt design

Why is the horse angry during 600 AD?

It's about the tang. With a knife the tang is a visible part of the hilt. The hilt tends to be stuck to the tang from both sides. With a sword the tang goes into the hilt and is not visible.
Also a knife is a tool and a weapon.

based. Glorious western sabres trash the weeb meme swords

You'd be angry too if you've had to carry some bitch on your back for 750 years.

>320lbs, slender figure
Huh?

>With a knife the tang is a visible part of the hilt. The hilt tends to be stuck to the tang from both sides.
I have steak knives that have the tang wrapped in plastic though?

A club, the kind with a long handle and heavier central head, is primarily for killing humans. An animal is hunted with a spear, an alt, perhaps a bow. Tools have short handles and stone heads for small precise work. The club has an optimized design for something else, it is long and balanced for the purpose of combat with an agile biped that will try to dodge blows, another human.

Attached: plan-26-02-preview-.jpg (910x607, 59K)

Oi yuo got a loicense fo that knoife?

Is this from a game ? The artstyle is fucking great.

I don't care how often swordfags repeat this design is optimized for its purpose, this sword looks like a bad job with the photoshop warp tool

Attached: egyptian-khopesh-sword.jpg (1750x2500, 263K)

The artist is called jun or seojh1029. They're not involved with any vidya, just an armor fag.

Attached: jun_(seojh1029).jpg (1448x2048, 211K)

Attached: armor helmets.jpg (2304x2781, 2.6M)

is that a gun on 14

>this design is optimized for its purpose
How is it optimized and what is it's purpose? I don't get it at all.

It's essentially a battleaxe, not a sword.

Tiny ornamental dragon most likely. But I could see some cheeky boy on the battlefield stuffing it with ignitable spices of the orient (gunpowder) to make it look like it was breathing fire. Samurai did similar shit with their helmets, which opened and closed like miniature stage shows.

I thought it was optimized for slashing people off horseback

have sex

The only examples of a character using a scythe I can think of are margaret moonlight from nmh 2 and a couple of fighting game characters.

It's half-way between a sword and an axe. Like a meat cleaver but optimized.

Attached: axesword.jpg (602x338, 45K)

Ancient Egyptians didn't ride horses, they used chariots.

Darksiders?

For Honor used too...now is getting a bit animeish but you cansee some realistic stances there

en.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-items-Ebony_Longsword.png

Attached: 1500442926719.png (191x234, 11K)

Just wondering though doesn't the point where it starts to curve seem a bit weak structurally? Or is it actually just fine? I thought with an axe/cleaver the idea is to have weight unlike this sword which seems to forgo that.

>the protagonist and basically everyone else all use swords

Attached: swords.jpg (600x337, 44K)

You'll notice that all the weight is centered near the tip of the weapon, for heavier swings. The curved blade is meant to slice as you bring the weapon down.

The only real issue is that the cutting edge is huge for an axe, real waraxes were smaller then your hand.

It's true in the sense that they preferred chariots in general but there are a few stone carvings of them riding horses. It was probably reckless and dangerous for them, on account of the horses not being docile and well bred like the ones we have today.

Attached: Egyptian Riders on Horseback in Ancient.jpg (300x204, 21K)

What's the benefit of having a smaller edge in this case?

Control probably.

The reason they used chariots was that horses of those days could not support human riders. Only later when horses were purposefully bred, could they be ridden.

Your eyes aren't wrong, it is a little structurally weak there. That one appears to be from a museum, and therefore it was made in the past, therefore the blacksmiths weren't exactly an expert at structural integrity. The modern khopesh seems to have that part slightly sturdier. It's still more thin than the rest of the sword, that's the design of the sword, it's supposed to be top heavy, but it's not as thin and structually fragile as .

Attached: pILQLj6.jpg (354x640, 51K)

Concentrated the impact force, cheaper and easier to produce then swords, also lighter since you pretty much HAVE to use them with shields because they have pretty much no defensive capabilities themselves.

And Aeron
I want more scythes, I just like them. Not even in the "I'M A REAPER OF SOULS MUAHAHAHAHA" way. I list like the look and how showy some devs get with them

Attached: I just like it.jpg (1280x613, 300K)

>class is Saber
>none of them use sabers
What did Nasu mean by this?

Attached: 1103507.jpg (1024x768, 586K)

Wrong. 2 horses carrying a solid wooden cart with 2 riders could carry those 2 riders bareback. The reality is that they didn't have saddles and fasteners. They would literally have to ride a horse on its bare back, which makes combat essentially impossible unless trained from birth for it.

Because swordsman isn't a good name for someone you should fuck during the game.

Senran Kagura lets you go full retard with the scythe.

Attached: 7352083.png (1920x1080, 849K)

>swordsman
>game

But they drew themselves riding horses. The riders aren't drawn to be particularly small, they have normal stature, so it doesn't seems to be an exception for children. Certainly these horses were generally weaker but it is most likely a bad temperament that made them unpopular for riding. Many animals can technically hold a man on their back but their temperament makes it unsuitable, horses weren't good for riding without thousands of years of breeding. These horses were probably half-way domesticated, most of them good enough for pulling chariots, and very very rarely but sometimes good for riding, and it's probably not the animal's strength that was the issue.

Attached: horse riding.jpg (602x470, 186K)

>armor fag
The best kind of fag.

Because shit taste. Poelarm/Axe is where its at.

Attached: Dx51YJiVAAAofdC.jpg (1448x2048, 414K)

The invention of saddles really changed everything and they aren't particularly easy to make. It used to be a profession, saddlemaker, someone could do nothing but make saddles all day long. You could have a saddle on a horse where the saddle is worth more coins than the horse.

Attached: Parts_of_Saddle_Cochise_Leather.jpg (1600x1200, 274K)

Because Katanas are cool as fuck, despite them being trash in real life and overused in media.

Attached: rengeshrug.gif (500x578, 2M)

In practice a katana is only as cool as its user.

ninjato is a straight nip sword.

Attached: 1.jpg (750x280, 10K)

Well, yeah, but that applies to everything, so it's moot to point it out.

Attached: 1535006788782.jpg (1920x1080, 249K)

Some of that artist's work does look like it could be used for vidya concept art. Look at that power move in the bottom corner. CUTE.

Attached: short cutie.jpg (1448x2048, 467K)

I'm surprised he hasn't been hired to design a character for mobile games.

As far as I'm aware ninjato weren't a real thing, there aren't any examples or descriptions of swords similar to them before the 20th century.

That being said the japanese did use straight swords early on, but they switched to curved swords later on.

Attached: Seven_stars_sword_Sitenoji_rotated.jpg (2352x768, 344K)

It's probably due to lack of metallurgy skills that non-european made curved swords. The more you lack skill and knowledge and raw component for producing quality metallurgy, the more you need to compensate by making curved swords that are good at one thing, so it can do that thing without breaking. It's a meme that japanese invented folding steel and unbreakable swords. European medieval blacksmiths knew it and did it better with quality steel, and the result is that they could make a straight sword good at mostly anything and it wouldn't snap like a twig. Everyone else made a straight sword, and it snapped, and decided not to do that anymore.

>you use chainsaw
>chainsaw duel

Attached: jotaro_yes.gif (500x281, 1.89M)

They also used Yari, Yomi, and Naginata during the Warring States period than the Katana, which was much more of a symbol and sidearm.

Lot of other nations didn't have the mettalurgy or need for a heavy, two-sided straight sword like the European longsword.

>Medieval german laws. Only nobles are allowed to own swords.
And this is complete bullshit, it was even required to have a weapon as a freeman in some parts of german land.
Most of the time, weapons are forbidden inside walls at that's about it.

A Kriegs has the hilt-tang combination of a regular knife, not of a sword. That's why it's a "Messer". And the word "knife" still refers to a weapon and a tool.

imagine what her tight-fitting pants must smell like after a whole day of adventuring haha

Katana are just sabers with broadsword length grips.

Looks like a voulge.

>can't even get all his fingers on the thing properly
retarded beyond belief.

I don't understand why you're bringing up levy laws here but okay? Fact remains, ritters and other nobles were the only ones allowed to use swords. Which is why a sword like weapon used by a peon was called a knife, even if it was five feet plus long.

Picture related. That's not a sword.

I don't think I've ever seen a Japanese axe.
A cleaver or hatchet, sure, but never something like a battleaxe. Am I just blanking out on obvious examples or did they use other weapons instead?

This is just like with c0h, amazing designs, creative armor/uniforms, cute girls, would be perfect for a vidya in their artstyle but it will never happen.

Which is not, I see a two handed sword and a katzbalger-ish sword.
Maybe you can give me the laws that prohibit anyone who isn't a noble to have a sword...

>moot

Who?

They didn't really used any sort of battleaxes, sappers would use some sort of tool axe if need be, but nothing similar to the dane axe for instance.
Naginata and somehow nagamaki would sorta fill that spot.

Weight distribution gives the weapon good momentum to help cutting, recovery is most likely poorer than with other sort of swords though.
