Shit exploration coupled with autistic combat does not make for a good game. Hollow Knight, Salt & Sanctuary, ESA, even mid-tier metroidvanias like Castle in the Darkness blow Rabi Ribi out of the water.

But I am playing it. Bought it during the sale last week. Finishing up my first playthrough on hard, just beat Erina the Forgotten Maiden and got the Bunny Memories attack. Only have the dlc SP bosses, a few more max ranks, and some eggs left to find before I start the harder difficulties.

The term wasn't coined for the genre, it was coined to tell people if you where talking about "Classicvania" or "Metroidvania" Castlevania games, since SoTN was so fundementally different from the games before it.
People just decided to keep the name for the entire genre though.

NG+ are kinda dumb in this game, at some point you either rape bosses or you get one shotted. the DLC nuke button doesn't help

Yeah, i'd say you're missing out at least a bit. Had no expectations coming into the game but I found it really fun.

I haven't found anything to be too hard yet. I should be able to manage bunny extinction. Bosses can be cheesed with the 1HP survival badge and healing with rainbow egg charge shots, which also maxes out you rank and damage bonus. Some of the debuffs are a pain though.
