EoSD is a great entry point. If you want something a bit more modern HSiFS is fairly straightforward and is available on Steam if you want to give ZUN money. Honestly though you can start pretty much anywhere you want.
I think it's like HSiFS, each character is a base shot with the 3 'goasts' being selectable between all the characters.
Any of the games is fine, there's no overarching story.
EoSD is the first in the modern canon. People recommend Imperishable Night for a first game a lot. HSiFS if you want to give ZUN money. Don't do LoLK unless you want to get fucked in the ass.

So i gained back interest in the games and tried LoLK for the first time tonight (last game i ever played was UFO back when it had just launched, so it's been almost 9 years i think).
Somehow ZUN got even worse at sketching his characters, i didn't know it was possible. Reisen being playable was a nice surprise and i guess the reason why i've been seeing Reisen posters a lot on Yea Forums these past few years. Game is hard as fuck though, damn, i used to play on hard back then (never could play in lunatic) but i can't get past stage 2 on hard now, feels bad
