I wont pretend to know what its gathering behind the scenes but I'm still here. The operating system is fine aside from the forced restarts which you can delay a few times but if you leave your PC on and you arent there it'll go ahead and do it.
I did notice a performance boost on the games I was playing at the time (Overwatch, Dark Souls 2 IIRC) on a i3570k and 290. It was worth the upgrade for me.
I've noticed it quite a bit. Weird thing is that Windows 10 restores everything after the reboot. Any open apps, chrome tabs are still there, opened explorer tabs.

Win 10 is a fine OS, all my games works perfectly on it*, and with may upgrade you'll be able to delay updates.
*don't forget to disable game bar and everything related to games in settings though, otherwise you'll suffer from framedrops

I haven't had any problems with W10 other than the mandatory update that was like 10gb fuck my low spec htpc connected to my tv. Managed to eventually install it but for a few months it would just keep harassing me to make HD space I didn't have for the update and pop windows over players and shit. It's been fine on my regular PC.
There's no reason to leave Windows 7 until new games and other software just can't run at all.

You can run most old games just fine via Wine. Personally I even had an easier time getting some obscure CD-ROM games to run on Linux than on Windows 7.

task manager is much improved, more detailed and flexible. i like that you can right click on the start menu (or windows key + x) to quickly access things like device manager. the os boots up faster and seems more more stable than windows 7. i previously had issues in rocksmith 2014 where the audio would fuck up and i'd have to alt tab out to fix it and that issue is completely gone in 10.
i think my number one complaint would have to be the start menu. it's really really bad imo. you can gut some of the bs out of it but it's still bad and it tries to pull up online results which i hate. otherwise the os runs well.

Windows 10 is really optimized so you will see some slight increase in performance. Also privacy concerns aside you can disable some of those intrusive elements, but I doubt everything can be disabled, if you are that kind of paranoid guy.
Then again windows 7 is not the worst of things, it's still pretty robust as a platform, and honestly, going back to my previous point about paranoia, just get a Linux distribution as your operating system.

Win10 runs about as well as should be expected. It's mostly the hour of removing spyware, disabling its "convenient features," and cleaning up the interface that sets it back.
That being said, it's best to just go all the way with Linux nowadays. Every distro has a package explorer that will keep you out of the CLI, environments like Cinnamon make the transition away from Windows a lot easier, and shite like Lutris exists for the extra braindeads who need help getting games to run on Linux.
Just create a bootable Win10 USB for legacy programs and otherwise completely cut out the botnet

I have literally never updated my w7 sp1 machine and run absolutely no anti virus and it still runs everything flawlessly. If you somehow can't manage this you do not deserve a computer.
Where foes it come from? I've literally never experienced forced restart on my PC and I'm using W10 since you could get it with a W7 key. The only mildlyannouing thing is forced updates on restart or shutdown, but I never get any prompts that I need to restart PC to update.

I want to dive right in, but at some point there will always be some specialized task that I'll need to do (usually with some sort of time constraint) and I won't know how to do it at all unlike with Win7. Some dumb shit like patching a pokemon rom, or messing with a router running openwrt and the instructions are cli as opposed to Windows click-and-drag.

A fresh install of 10 got stuck in an unbreakable update loop the first time, and the second time it refused to install half of my software because (as I found out hours later) it didn't like what the user\appdata path was called.

Been using Windows since Windows 3.1 on 6 floppy disks. Windows 10 for years. Just added Start10 to make the start menu tolerable. Never had any problems. Performance is top notch, not a single BSOD or crash I couldn't simply use Task Manager to work around. Got Win10 Professional on 3 computers in the house now. All of them run smooth as butter.
I think people scared to upgrade are just a bunch of faggots that are too lazy to use Classic Shell or sheep that don't understand the millions of advantages and can't see past the start menu, so they try to make excuses that fall flat when talking to someone with real PC experience and not just playing games. I have my MSCE and Novell certs. I am a network admin for a fortune-100 company. I manage a network of 700 computers all running Windows 10 and absolutely hate Windows 7 because of how inflexible and unpredictable it is compared to Windows 10. And I don't know a single real computer enthusiast still holding out and using arcane OS's. There's nothing Windows 7 does that Windows 10 can't do better -- except the start menu, which can be fixed in less than 3 minutes.

Every single update has broken some function for me, the best one was the anniversary update forcing itself through despite me disabling every auto-update function you could find online. Also when I updated from W7 despite only having my admin account I had to get a 3rd party tool because MS in their infinite brilliance decided to give admin permissions to a non-existent account so I could do next to nothing until I used the tool to snag them for every folder.

I end up using win10 for my new build since i kept hearing win7 had performance issues with ryzen. Until now the only problem i had was an update fucking up with the internet connection and blocking the LAN configuration but i manage to fix it with a .reg file. Besides that it just werks and opening iso files with double click without daemon is pretty sweet.

I currently dual boot, arch and windows 10.
Arch is fun to tinker with and I spend most of my time on it, but I don't really game on it.
I've tried before and it just wasn't worth the hassle since it is far more convenient to play on windows.
A good while ago I had setup GPU pass through and it was great but non-gratis with all the parts I bought for it, CPU performance impact for gaming was negligible on a 4K monitor at 60Hz.
I even managed to get VR working without a hitch once I passed through a PCIE USB controller.
The main benefits over dual booting were as follows:

I removed my passthrough setup a long time ago since one game was spiking and I thought it was due to my virtual hdd's performance but it turned out it wasn't after dual booting.
My setup had the host use an iGPU which was not great for watching Chinese motion pictures on MPV.
Switching the GPU back to the host required shutting down the VM, then running a script which logs you out and in with the dGPU.
Such a hassle.
I have a second dGPU lying around, just need a motherboard with 2 PCIEx16 slots and I will be at it again.

I had to upgrade to Windows 10 because my new motherboard didn't have USB drivers for Win 7. It mostly works.
The main problem is that a couple times a day, it completely freezes for a few seconds. It's pretty annoying, and it'd probably be more so if I ever played multiplayer games. With how random it is, I don't even know how to start diagnosing it.
Also, the start menu is nigh unusable. It just lists all the shit in alphabetical order. What's even the point? I just use the search bar, which fortunately works in the version I got.

Ever since I've shifted to Windows 10 I have this annoying problem where if I leave my PC on for too long there's minor lag spikes. Probably happens every couple of minutes and it only lasts a second, but if you're playing an FPS it's fucking horrendous.
I can temporarily fix it by restarting my PC but I've no idea what's causing it.

You can stop regular updates for 35 days even on consumer versions and feature updates for 18 months. Beyond that you still get very little control.
Startup times still kinda suck, but at least I'm not having any problems with resource hogging after everything is loaded and ready.
