Cause this happens every single time a massive launch happens. You get 2m+ people trying to access the servers at the same time and it crashes cause they can't handle the huge increase in traffic. It's not worth upgrading servers since this is a one time thing. Literally happens with every massive launch, GTAV online was unplayable, SFV was unplayable, Diablo 3 was unplayable, etc.

Perhaps the dumbest moment was when Pokebank crashed when only Japan had access to the service and they ended up having to delay the thing for half a year.
