A spear is more effective than a sword in a 1v1 scenario. Again, I cannot stress enough how much harder it hits than a sword. Even a staff is better than a sword. Presumably you are fighting people with armor, so striking power is really important. And obviously better speed and utility are more important when acting alone as well.

Spears are bad gameplay due to an inherently zoner playstyle and severely lacking in the versatility swords can offer. In addition the fundamental design of spears can never match the beauty of the sword.
I really love the illiad, but it's the characters, the storytelling, the context and the setting that are cool, not the weapons they're using.
Hell, while is dank for a textual description, gameplay wise it's either a canned animation or a grab that only works on enemies with a very specific model type.
All in all the spear is just a reverse katana, put on a pedestal for its functionality rather than its aesthetics.

That's wrong, though. Greeks originally used them for individual combat. That's what the Iliad is about, people 1v1ing with spears. They were dominant in the phalanx because the phalanx was the dominant formation.

Swords were primarily used by mounted cavalry when you needed one free hand to control a horse and there was no room for charging. (charging is obviously necessary for spears/lances because its difficult to put the force of your entire body behind a stab when you are seated on a moving animal) Stuff like the zweihander was basically a retarded polearm used exclusively by autistic krauts.
Knights used swords because obviously they mainly functioned as cavalry.
