Simple truth is that tourneyfags aren't really interested in having more viable stages. As far as they are concerned, Battlefield, FD, Smashville and Town&City are all the stage variety the game needs. You shouldn't concern yourself with whether stages should be designed for tournament legality, because you'll end up banning every stage that's even slightly interesting.

The strongest element of P5 is its UI, so it makes sense that a loving representation of it would go all out with those sorts of details. It's what Joker gets in exchange for having a moveset that isn't particularly referential to his game or abilities, such as totally ignoring the wild card ability.

The rebellion gauge mechanic seems really shit, where to build it you either have to take hits or be at disadvantage, and then you only get Arsene for a short time. Arsene being the only persona and Eiga/Eigaon being the only spell is also pretty disappointing.

His moveset doesn't really reflect what Joker is like in P5 except on a really superficial level. In P5 he can change personas, summon them at will, can only use magic through a Persona (he can just use it on his own in Smash), and doesn't act in tandem with his persona (either he attacks or his persona does, but not both).

I get the strong feeling he'll be bottom tier too since I suspect that he'll be weak without Arsene, but getting Arsene out and using him in a competitive match will be excruciatingly difficult.

I'm gonna disagree here. I'd even say it represents him better than what you're thinking.

Wild Card isn't something unique to Joker, but Arsene is, as is the grappling hook. The gun (to a lesser extent, considering evokers) also applies here. Jokers moveset is designed around the elements that make him Joker, that make him a Phantom Thief. Not the elements that make him a Persona protagonist.

It's easy to say "Joker has Wild Card, therefore he should be able to switch like Pokemon Trainer" but Joker has a lot more defines who he is beyond the concepts necessitated by the gameplay designs of his series. If you asked most people how they would describe Joker, they would say "he's a phantom thief" and not "he can use any persona"

Sure, but when Sakurai goes to such autistic lengths to get cosmetic details right you'd think he could at least do the same for the moveset. I was expecting something like gun and dagger for normals, Arsene for smash attacks, and a few of the more famous personas for specials like Jack Frost and Pixie. They didn't even necessarily have to give up the rebellion gauge mechanic for that, they could just have it buff him in a different way. Having yet another counter-based character is pretty frustrating too, it really feels like Sakurai is out of ideas in the special moves department.

It lasts about 5 seconds in that clip with roughly 25-30% of the bar. Even being generous Arsene isn't likely to last longer than 20 seconds, and if having him out actually makes Joker dangerous then the obvious strategy is to simply evade Joker until Arsene is gone.

The grappling hook is fine thematically but it's a joke to say that it's a core element of the character because of some menu silhouettes.

If they had done it as an SP gauge where you can summon Arsene at will but can only use him a few times before the gauge runs out and you have to wait for it to regen, I'd be fine with it.
