There are clear reasons as to why Digimon either fails or just just gets by. To put it simply, it won't be itself.
Digimon had a very unique, striking, and good art style, and there's nothing around now that emulates it. Digimon traded it out for a style that's everywhere, a style that oversaturates the market. It keeps the series from standing out or appearing like it's anything interesting. And this change of style permeates every other decision the series had made.
When it tries to be Pokemon, it sucks. Digimon can't be Pokemon. Pokemon is already Pokemon.
When it tries to be SMT, it sucks. Digimon can't be SMT. SMT is already SMT.
And you bet your ass it'll suck when it tries to be something else that already exists and has an audience. Because the audience for that thing already has that other thing, the original. Digimon shouldn't try to be an imitator.
It just doesn't know how to own being Digimon. The series no longer understands the design process and style the series became a success with, and it doesn't understand the potential a Digimon renaissance could have. It just goes for the easiest game it can make, the most generic game it can make. It relies on terribly executed nostalgia bait and generic slutty anime girls to reach the lowest common denominators. I don't even need to buy the games for that, you idiots. I can jerk off to anime sluts with my internet browser if I want to. I can relive nostalgia by just sitting there and thinking if I want to. You know what I would buy, what would draw me in? A fucking good game that nails being Digimon. Something that pushes every OG Digimon design convention as far as it can, and brings the series forward while sticking to its non-anime roots. A real goddamn Digimon game that surpasses the first World.
