He removed the MMO and RPG aspects of CoH. I don't want to play on his dead server. I want to play on a competent private server.

There's two versions of the game, City of Heroes and City of Villans. CoH, and CoV. CoX refers to both at once.

Yeah, they added a Ninja Sprint which was a beefier version of sprint but you had to be some level of veteran player to have access to. Or whatever they called the older players when they launched the free2play model, I don't remember.

that reminds me I think CoX might've been the first MMO to monkey in a system that would auto-sidekick a character UP levels to match their mentor or could scale a higher level character DOWN to exemplar for lower level teams.
City of Heroes really was pushing some mechanically cool shit back in the day. They never had a way to just set yourself down manually to a chosen level until Ouroborous and you could theoretically stick yourself into a level range you want and just patrol the streets hunting Skullz if you wanted.

Once again these journalists are afraid to throw in shit like how he was taking in massive amounts of donations while discussing how to evade taxes, how he in 2013 he made a Post about why private servers are impossible to both A. Discourage anyone from trying to make one and B. Discourage anyone from seeking one. The superhero themed game, along with developer Paragon Studios, was shuttered due to a “realignment of company focus and publishing support” by publisher NCSoft. Fans rallied for in-game protests, funded spiritual successors on Kickstarter, and eventually fell back on creating their own versions of City of Heroes that couldn’t be taken away from them.

Paragon Chat and SEGS are two of the surviving mirrors of City of Heroes’ content, but neither of them have full functionality. Rumors have persisted for years in the City of Heroes community about a full private server, and they were finally confirmed by a player named Destroyer Stroyer. As Massively Overpowered originally reported, this leak — as well as the reaction to it — has led a once-dormant community to explode into chaos.

Destroyer Stroyer, who identifies himself as Brian, shared his experience in a 34-minute video.
The emulator SCORE (Secret Cabal of Reverse Engineers), according to Brian, has been run in secrecy by a closed community for the last six years. By revealing the existence of this secret server, Brian broke a nondisclosure agreement that he had signed. He alleges that SCORE was kept quiet by power players in the City of Heroes community.

Brian’s first objection is that “playing the game, and not being able to share the game, was not fun.” Many fans lost a major emotional investment when City of Heroes was closed down, and they have been holding out hope that they can return to their digital home.

His other allegation is that the secret SCORE server may have a database backup of the live game, which could include account information.

In a statement to Massively OP, SCORE’s lead developer, Leandro Pardini, denied many of Brian’s accusations. He said he is not a City of Heroes subreddit moderator, that other emulation clients are not in league with SCORE’s community, and that no personal information from customer accounts was ever distributed to SCORE by Paragon’s former employees. Pardini added that not only would this be an inexcusable privacy breach, but “that is not information that a game server would ever need to operate, and so it would have been completely pointless to share.”

City of Heroes fans are in an uproar. Some are furious that there’s been a way to return to Paragon City that they didn’t know about. Many players lost long-term communities or friends over City of Heroes, and the more time that passes, the weaker those links become. Other fans are angry at Brian, feeling that NCSoft may crack down on this server as a result of the leak. (NCSoft declined to comment on the matter.)

There’s also the question of who got invited and why — and as a follow-up, who didn’t get invited. For some of the players who dismissed SCORE as a wild embellishment or rumor, there’s a sense of betrayal.

Pardini touched on this in his statement, writing: “This is a difficult thing to address, because nobody likes feeling lied to, even by omission. At the same time, operating under an NDA comes with some rules that are well understood. The fact that we’re talking about a server project for a game while the company that owns the IP is still active and used aspects of the IP very recently for Master X Master makes things more complicated.”

Pardini apologized to any City of Heroes community member that was called a liar or “crazy” over rumors of SCORE’s existence. SCORE’s developers intend to keep developing the project in secret. They do not intend to share a progress report, and the NDA “will remain in full effect.”

Lots of customization, costumes, power tinting, power emanation points, auras, conditional auras depending on combat, powers being used, etc.
Large city with lots of smaller, but still big side zones like a desert, an underwater zone, the moon, alternate hell dimension, etc.
4 player group size with flex of up to 6 for dungeons and missions, 8 player group size for raids and harder dungeons, 40 player raid size for open world events

Power and skill trees reminiscent of City of Heroes with paths to go down. Instead of being limited to Blaster/Guardian or whatever players can freely select any power tree at level 1, 15, and 30. These power trees are your standard, Fire, Bows, Martial Arts, etc. At level 1, and every even level after that players are given a skill from that tree. Every odd level they are given a boost or enhancement point that they can spend in a skill. These boosts can do minor things like increase damage or more dramatic things like turning it into a taunt or adding a healing component. Once the player reaches level 10 they can swap between roles which will enhance certain play styles, these are your standard Scrapper, Tank, etc.

If players have a themed hero in mind, say someone like the Human Torch which only has Fire powers, they can opt to rechoose the same tree at 15 and 30. This will give them access to new powers and enhancement options in those trees.

Travel powers aren't just used to get around, they have combat applications. When players create a character they get access to a dodge roll to move a short distance quickly with iframes. When players select a travel power at level 10 and an optional one at 30 their dodge roll is upgraded to reflect this. Superspeedsters get a quick dash that has less iframes, but has almost no lag to it and goes a bit further and etc. There's more, but 2000/2000.

Imagine living in a city filled with super heroes and still trying to commit crimes.

You know how when you saved a citizen on the street they were coded to come up and thank you? I used to fly around and kill street thugs from ranged up in the sky and the citizen would just path around below me trying to get to me. I spent a few hours flying around atlas park 1 shotting hellions and collecting a giant mob of grateful citizens rushing to try and get to me, then I'd just hang under Atlas with like hundreds of them mobbing around the platform trying to get up to me.

The cool part was that, after a couple months, people in my guild started making their own SPAR armor characters, and started attempting to roleplay being the other 9 members of the squad, so they could "hunt" me down and retrieve the armor, without telling me it was them. I didn't know until the game shut down and we all reconnected over Discord.

Felt fucking neat to come up with a story, and have your friends wrap around the story and try to add on to it. Never got that experience in another game.

This whole private server mess pisses me off, because the faggots with access probably only played the game as a min-max power-set peen swinging simulator, instead of actually doing anything cool with it.

I got my asshole caved in so fucking hard so many times.

Turning IH into a click instead of a toggle was like them throwing in the towel on that persisting balance problem. It was so impossible to figure out, a Regen scrapper was literally either alive and unkillable or got spiked to death. No middle ground.
I think it was also done because IH scrappers were able to stand in the middle of Hami, keeping the taunt locked on them and tank/instantly heal from his attacks and they wanted to make Hamidon harder. or, something.

A more accurate description here is: "the dwarf's finger clips into the platform the wizard is standing on".

They accepted donations to Paragonchat for upkeep purposes knowing full well it was a smoke screen and a test server for an actual fully functioning game, while claiming Paragonchat was all they could emulate and there will never be a full server as its completely impossible.

The fact that they kept claiming there can never be a private server shows that they had no intention of releasing this.

The fact that they didn't get in trouble for Paragonchat and SEGS haven't got in trouble shows that they wouldn't get C&D'd and I think they knew that.

Really though, what was definitely the best MM set up? I always heard that mercs had more DPS, while Bots were tougher, and all the rest weren't worth talking about. It was also pretty much just traps or bubbles, with traps offering mostly debuffs and stuns (mostly acid mortar), and bubbles obviously letting you dump defense on all of your pets + the team.

I played bots/traps and my issue was always getting blown the fuck out by AoE or cleaving attacks. Poison trap and acid mortar were definitely fucking nuts, though. Debuffing a targets defense to nothing and just stunlocking them for ages was just stupid.

Bots definitely had the best Quality of Life, strong shields, healed each other, they were all ranged so they stayed clump up for your aoe buff/heal abilties and gunned down targets from afar.
Thugs I remember were really high dps, mostly ranged with a aoe arsonist and a Tank frontliner.

Ninjas were the best at absolutely infuriating your party thanks to the Oni. I remember actually intentionally leaving the oni un-summoned in situations because that fuckhuge fire rain AoE he cast would cause enemy AI to try to scatter and run out of it so badly. It was like caltrops on steroids. A jounin could be turned into stalker-lite with that ability that granted a chosen ninja henchman hidden status for 10 seconds though

One of the best things about CoH was the community. So you take away that you're gonna get bored quick when you've done everything.

I mean there's a bad apple in every bunch and there were in CoH too, there was a very specific clique on the official forums who were very gatekeepy and dicks. Most people didn't know about it as they didn't go on the official forums. So their idea of the CoH community was super welcoming, super helpful to newbies, and overall very friendly people.

But not so much on the Infinity Server, who were pretty cliquey, and were the ones often on the forums.

You just had to hop in Pocket D and see all the furry erpers.

Bots had a good mix of smashing and energy so had varied damage whenever you came up against +res opponents and were very self sufficient with the Protector Bots.
Mercs were almost exclusively lethal so things went a bit slower when up against enemies like Freakshow until your commando picked up flamethrower. But the Spec Ops were in a league of their own with Stealth, Snipe, Web Grenades, Tear Gas Grenades and Flashbangs.
As a Merc/Traps MM I really didn't do much myself other than throw web grenade, build minefields and mortar traps, and maybe fire a slug every now and again.
The sound of three of your mobs firing Full Auto in unison though, sweet sweet music.

Lower server load, level design that doesn't have to accommodate fifty randos, near-total reduction of ninja looters and having to wait for that one fucker to spawn? Absolutely fantastic. In terms of character creation I'd say yeah. You're very limited in DCUO since they only allow you to have a certain number of different colors on a costume.

DCUO was more fun if you wanted an arcadey action game and/or raid-oriented endgame. which eventually drove me away, holy shit the dcuo community was full of assholes. the Turkish players who I couldn't even understand but would occasionally do faceroll raids with were the best dudes I met.
DCUO didn't embed itself into your heart and let your imagination go wild making all sorts of different character types like CoX did. less power choice, way way way less costume making fun. and super bases were fucking awesome you could engross yourself in base building, the tools available to you were excellent

everything had so much love put into it. they even gave us power animation and color customization.

i made a massive angel with an even bigger sword. titan weapons was my favourite fucking thing, the sheer WHAM and BOOM of every hit was so satisfying.

Towards the end of the game's life, maybe Empath. Having a person on dedicated heals just was not fucking necessary. Empaths were the typical MMO healer. for the guy who just wanted to rock the aura and occasionally use his targeted massive heals. I remember they had one or two really fucking nice buffs, too.

What, no way, Ice Blast was super meta in the early pvp days. Lots of ST Burst and a ST Hold, as weak as it may have been. Eventually though people did shift to Fire Blast even for pvp.

I can see this, dedicated healer powers were kind of shit, Buffs/Debuffs and CCs were so much better. Empathy did have some iconic buffs though.

Spines/Dark, now THAT was a player I could get behind.

some of the sets like energy blast had stuff that just wasn't good like knockback on literally everything. coulda been good maybe if that "chance for knockdown" proc was more reliable and applied globally or if it had a high damage trade-off. PB's that tried ranged builds faced the same issue. Some stuff just had animations that were too long, like Beam Rifle and Assault Rifle, and for melee Titan Weapons. Super Reflexes and Energy Aura tended to be overly niche, but that wasn't always a bad thing, like with Electric Armor.

That said, almost nothing was unplayable except for troll builds like Energy Blast/Storm Summoning slotted for knockback. Some stuff just wasn't as strong. There was some stuff like the old Energy Melee/Ninjitsu where the build offered way too much, same w/ old spines/regen. I mess around w/ builds in Mids' sometimes

At this point i can't even tell if they're actual shills or genuinely that cucked in thier outlook.

Fortitude was good all round buff as it buff'd almost everything, could stack, and you get it runnin on a full party of 8 or double stack a 4 group with enough haste.
Free endurance and Adrenaline Boost were always good too, but yeah the healing part fell to the wayside later on.

DCUO would be a lot better if they implented some stuff from Champions Online like customizable arch-enemies and open world pvp events where a player gets to get a raid boss villoan

I can actually understand why people didn't leak it and play in secret in that if you leaked it, you got banned from the game, as did your friends, and then you were painted as a conspiracy nutjob or a shit stirring troll and your reputation just ruined in the community, and it ends in nobody believing you anyways so ultimately, leaking would be pointless as nobody becomes aware of the game and it ends with you not playing the game and your reputation damaged.

I'll be honest, after the last decade of MCU and DCU. I want to go back to silly unrealistic bullshit. Joss Whedon has drained me of all desire for the drama.

I never played this game but this is some pretty entertaining shit going on here.

Blasters gained the ability to use their first two primary and first secondary power while under a mez as part of a revamped Defiance mechanic.
They were also going to get instant cast snipe powers if they got enough toHit buffs from powers and better self sustain with some +regen +recovery type effects baked into their secondaries. Cloaking Device for example was going to become Field Agent which still gave you a stealth toggle but also some form of regen and recovery effect for defeating mobs.
Not to mention they were also removing the Endurance crash from all the big dick 32 AoEs.

Giving Kheldians Mez protection seems more like treating the symptom of an invite only private server with a low player count. Kheld's were all about being in the biggest teams you could get as you got passive bonuses including mez protection from Controllers or Dominators. Having more players also meant a good chance of getting a mez protection buff from a power set anyway.

It was always safe enough to go public. He just wanted the server for himself because of some power trip, he knew that he could control the people on his server with it. Thats why he's so insistent on not releasing the code to the public, cause he'd no longer be the only CoH private server anymore. It's why he tried to shut down other revival projects or recruited him to their site, and why he made up and pushed a fabrication that making a private server was impossible.

They have everyone's accounts that were still accessible by the end of the City of Heroes live servers. They've demonstrated they can copy and paste characters from people's accounts onto their private servers. This means they have players' account names - even if they don't have the passwords, that is still an insane breach of private information. How has this fact been glazed over by every single journalist out there? He LITERALLY has ACCOUNT INFORMATION of ACTUAL PEOPLE and has demonstrated to HAVE ACCESS TO THESE ACCOUNTS. That is LITERALLY hacking. Not that I personally give a shit, but the fact this has been ignored by the skeptics blows my goddamn mind.

I mean, there's no proof he was involved, only a basis that he might have been, but even then that was only a passing comment. There's a possibility that he wasn't really thinking or paying too much attention to the question. I think we should still keep asking him until he gives a more appropriate response. Hopefully he wasn't in on it though. That'd be some bullshit. Worst part is that most people who were actively in the CoH scene and were popular were probably in on it or are too disinterested in the drama to want to bother who haven't already started speaking out.

Matt was even working on a mission or TF for I24 or I25 where the new member would be introduced. Using the Alternative Power Bar, you could actually play as the new member. There would even be a Hero side version and a Villain side version. Sigh..... We were also working with Rooster Teeth to do a series of live action comedy videos to promote it, which would have culminated in the winner being announced at their show in Austin. (Hosun)

They're all employed elsewhere in other MMOs. DCUO and Champions (mostly Champions) scooped over half of them up, the rest have been working on Ship of Heroes and some stayed with NCSoft and moved onto other games like Wildstar which means a double whammy RIP for them.

Not sure how late I am to this but this is a pretty crazy revelation.
What they've been doing (though culpability is largely with whoever's monopolised the code - Leandra?) is a damned shame.

Yanking people across the zone with teleport, or being yanked.
Appreciating decent or fun bios. Upping your bio game because of it, even if you never do that sort of thing.

Inspirations were also fun because they let you do retarded things... for a short while.
Remember a bit of ghosting gone wrong, with our ghost getting ganked next to the objective.
Just looked at each other, popped a few purples then made a break for the mission boss, dragging an entire army of Clockwork right behind us.

The travel power debate was always great. Jumpers argued they could get anywhere a flyer could, but traversed faster, speedsters always said they were the fastest despite having to navigate roads and buildings, flyers always said traveling as the crow flies literally is best but as I said earlier, teleport + suped up hover was the best, no argument

Started playing the game in late 2004, and I think I made my first female character that I actually played in 2011 or 2012. I remember it was a Spines/Fiery Aura scrapper I used on my 2nd account just to power level myself.

I'd probably play some females characters if I got to play again, but probably not right away because I'd remake a few of my characters which were male. I don't know why but this reminds me of this girl I used to E-Date on the game who's character was a carbon copy of Raven from Teen Titans. The thing is she shared an account with her younger sister, and her sister would randomly log onto her character and pretend to be her and talk to me. So it was like I was E-dating this girl and her sister. I want to go back

Teleport has the straight up speed advantage.
Though I appreciated Combat Jumping (with Hurdle) just as much as Super Jump. Gave ridiculous air control. Makes tiny hops generate high momentum, so don't even have to slow down while attacking.

I've hardly obsessed over the game... but even years later I've found myself absent-mindedly toying with ideas for a new character out of nowhere.
I really hope all of the old gang are alive and well and doing alright for themselves.

teleport was the fastest in a literal sense but was kind of a pain in the ass to use
super speed was very very close but gave you no vertical movement whatsoever, so you needed to pair it with something else that gave you some extra jump height if you diddn't want to suffer through some of the more vertical zones
fly was the slowest but the most versatile and easy to use, being able to hover in combat was also a pretty huge bonus for some fights/maps
super jump was basically just a middle ground: faster than fly but slower than super speed, better vertical movement than super speed but worse than fly

I still don't think we should go after cr1itkal til we get proof and his fans might side with him making this worse.

Teleport wasn't that bad to use, especially if you set up a bind for it. It was also great for PvP because you could hard counter any teleport pull attempts by just clicking teleport at your own feet. The moment they pulled you you would teleport right back.

Champions has GOAT character creation and at level 30 you can make your own nemsies that attacks you randomly throughout the gameworld however it's basically a dead mmo kept up by cashshop bullshit back when the game was alive I spent non-stop doing the zombie survival pvp mode that shit was so rad

CO and DCUO are both pretty awful, i'd suggest not wasting your time.

CO is slightly better if you really, really want to.
