They're incapable of intentionally inflicting pain like that, but they are easily victims themselves in situations they never had before, ie. "YOU didn't do what I wanted" or throwing a tantrum when they get criticized. Blame the parents that raised their children in a bubble, but having bad experiences is part of life and when you take that away they don't know how to process it when someone does something they're not used to.

Matchmaking may have reduced 'griefing' if only because nowadays devs ban players for "toxic behaviour" if enough butthurt fags report someone.
But in the times of community servers, you were playing with the same much smaller group of people. If you acted like a cunt, people got to know to expect it from you and could get a server mod to ban you or they could votekick you. People still got excluded if their behaviour was shitty, but this decision was taken at a lower level, and you were only banned from one server or group of servers, so you had a chance to stop being such a faggot on other places.
Matchmaking encourages "toxic" behaviour, because when you're just being matched with random players that you will almost certainly never see again, there are no apparent consequences for acting like a cunt.

We never recorded it, but me and a friend used to grief on Zombie Panic Source. He used voice clips of The Riddler from Batman TAS and i used Joker voice lines. We would find zombie players and guide them towards the human players.
Our greatest success was in a game when the human players had survived the entire round without losing anyone, so it was something like 22 human players to 2 zombie players. There was a helipad the human players had to get to to win the round, accessed through two sets of double doors. Me and my friend had discovered that weapons dropped onto the ground prevented doors from being opened due to collision models, so we ran ahead to the helipad and blocked both doors as the Riddler and Joker tainted them to open it. The two zombie players managed to turn everyone else but us into zombies before we got on the helicopter and won. A lot of the human players saw the funny side. If we'd recorded that match, I'm certain it would have gone viral.

Too many people with nothing to lose, including in both f2p mmos and dedicated servers. There's more chinks, ruskies, brs, mexicants, and so on that will literally spend all day trying to ruin your shit and not necessary in "pvp"-oriented situations. And because they're so numerous and relentless, its no longer fun. Hell, you can even include the veteran pvpers who didn't grow in maturity.

Everquest private servers have this one "red" server dedicated to the pvp rulesets with some modfication. Where as the blue or "pve/normal" server tends to have 1600-2100 people at any given time, the pvp server, up for more then half a decade now, sits at 60-200 during its heyday. There's all sorts of rules and incentives to try and protect new players and groups/guilds to at least make some progress despite the dangers. Insanely increased xp, severe level limitations on when someone is allowed to attack each other, server-wide chat due to extremely low population and distance issues, and so on.

Despite these precautions, the population has never increased. There's players on these servers who dedicate their lives to have an ultra-twinked character for every leveling tier to bypass the pvp rules. The economy is ruined because despite have an ultra low population because certain gear that would normally be worthless has an extreme worth for the said ultra-pvper twinks and sometimes meta-gaming for pvp. The server-chat is filled with nothing but back and forth shit talking about not /bowing (not in the rules, just shit made up by the ultra-pvpers) and someone else being a pussy with the usual language. There was one actual guild's serious attempt at leveling on the server and trying to be "sporty" with doing a world pvp scene that was falsely encouraged to get people to play on the server. That everyone in that guild eventually quit when the "main" guild would harass them to no end at max level.

A few reasons. Number one is that the rise of matchmaking and the death of private servers and lobbies. That and severe punishment for griefing of any kind that is unescapable since you're being banned from matchmaking rather than just one server.

This is what's lost. Griefing isn't to inflict harm, but rather inconvenience without long term loss through subtle or creative ways. I would argue that much of the reason why it's not effective, is that people have too much ability to control their experience, with too little means to be inconvenient to others.
With that said, Minecraft-kids deserve everything that comes there way.

Griefing was always gay but banter was the best shit to do in online games. Without it, every game is the same. I can't make the enemy mad or laugh with strangers. There's nothing social about it nowadays.

most modern games are so grindy and uninteresting that people wont really have any real attatchment to whats happening in their current session full of strangers who dont speak.
if you can do something in a game that causes someone else in your session to sit there at their computer and type out a 300 word essay on why you should kill yourself, then thats probably a good avenue for griefing
