I've got an hour of gameplay. What's the meta here? I keep taking 15 minutes per stage because I want as many power up gimmicks as possible but I feel like by not rushing it I'm just making it easier to die later. How do I unlock new characters?

Character unlocks are listed ingame. You should get mul-t huntress and engineer pretty easily with repeat plays. Artifice needs to be bought with lunar coins. Mercenary requires you to reach the obelisk after stage 7

transcendence's shields can't be healed by any items, so the only way to get health back is to let it regenerate by not getting hit.

At about roughly the fourth stage should be where you start to slow down and try and either get more on the map or save for the guaranteed legendary chest hidden in the low cave in the middle. Before that things spawn way too slow to efficiently get through the level with any speed. Try to get one or two offensive items in the first stage, then boss. But if you’re just starting out then just experiment, learn what’s good and what’s not. Don’t always trust us here either, different items that some people here think are trash are actually really good for different characters or different set ups that you get going. There are some objectively always good items but most of those are fairly obvious.
If I like RoR will I like RoR2 or is the game just fundamentally different due to the extra dimension?

I actually think she’s in a pretty good place right now. Different items are more pressing to me. I disagree with thinking she should conform to every character needs to stack attack speed and maximize a ton of little attacks to proc rather than having more diversity in play styles. Only thing I’d say she needs is a little hover or have her do a little mini float when casting snap freeze like Huntress does when casting glaive so she has a default option for resisting fall damage.

the thing is, the way this game is designed stacking on hit is the only real way to play, her "damage" it literally meaningless past the first stages, character damage doesn't matter, your damage is purely based on on hit procs, being slower at applying these means you are playing a weaker character.
I am not saying she needs to be commando 2.0 but this is a fundamental design flaw in the game. any character that doesn't just shit out on hit procs, isn't good.

There are literally 2 M1 classes in the game right now.
Engi is brain dead, but at least you need to position his shit well, Huntress has to exploit bounces to do solid AoE unless you get an amazing loadout, and Merc constantly cycles through all of his skills to function.
Artificer isn't some unique exception to the game's playstyle, she's just clunky and bad with really terrible item interactions that don't scale like everyone else. She also lacks an actual defensive skill, so unless you get specific items she just gets erased by most of the bosses by the end of the first loop.

It's a single player/co-op game, who gives a fuck if there's 1 item that's strong? Every Rogue-lite is like this.
Look, do this: Save up all your lunar coins (or cheat them in, who cares) until you get around 30, preferably more. You have to have Gesture of the Drowned unlocked too. Then start the run, and find the newt altar, hit it and beat the stage. If no newt altar on stage one, restart. Then get into the newt altar and hope you get at least one GotD. Then hope you get an offensive use item like rocket launcher and every stage, find the places where the newt altar can spawn and keep activating it and hope you get more GotD. Once you have 5, you should be auto-proccing your use item, unless it's the preon gun since that one sucks. At this point, it should be the second loop and you should just need to run around and play defensively while you're auto-killing everything. By stage 10 or so you should start seeing the elite bosses. Hopefully you pick up a royal capacitor, that's pretty much auto-win if you hide behind a rock on every stage and just look at things so they die.
This works with any character too.
if you find a 3d printer too early, you can't make enough sticky bombs to get one-shot value out of it. you need to get good enough rng to find two in one run in that case. you do realize the whole point of this game is to continue attempting runs until you get a god run with amazing rng and break the game, right? that's literally why people play it.
this isn't dark souls you fucking newfag, it's a game whose challenge largely lies in getting subpar or straight up bad rng but you keep playing anyway in hopes that you'll eventually get good rng and totally destroy every single enemy that spawns. that is the point of the game.

There's no reason why sticky bombs give higher % proc rate with each stack, even without that upgrade they would still be strong.

The % chance increases their damage you brainlet. They're better than stickies until you hit 15 stacks. A lot of things are mathematically better than stickies for most of the game, but you know, get triggered that they can be stacked to 50 and kill things I guess.

I don't agree with this one. I think it's great that certain survivors have great synergy with certain items, as well as certain characters having awful synergy with certain items. It's that kind of variety that makes the game interesting; it would be dull if all the items were balanced to be uniformly beneficial to all survivors. And for the record, Engineer isn't completely dependent on fungi to perform well, he has good synergy with a ton of items, fungus just happens to have the best.
arti's m1 used to have a proc coef of 0.2 so it rarely proc'd since that virtually nullifies any proc chance under 100%. they fixed it to be 1

In the early game, yeah (first loop or so, maybe parts of the second too). Once other characters start stacking on-hit stuff, she starts to lag behind since she's getting matched/possibly even outpaced in damage but still has no mobility/defense.
Prioritize goat hooves, hopoo feathers, and wax quails for mobility so you can use Flamethrower safely (it's your primary damage dealer). Get backup mag literally every time you see it so you can spam kamehamehas. As always, try to get teddy bears and healing items so you can try to offset her low health pool and lack of mobility. Also, early game crowbars are great because they'll let you one shot lesser wisps with her M1 reliably.
They buffed elders. They apply fire dot now. Learn the animation they do before the fire breath and don't charge at them like a retard when you see it.

I've seen arguments made in these threads that drizzle is harder than monsoon because it's harder to get money early on. Difficulty is just one of those things people will do anything to rationalize. Ultimately all that matters is they're having fun. Just turn drizzle into your water cooler.

Drizzle isn't harder early game it just takes forever for mobs to spawn for you to kill them to turn that into chests. The amount of time wasted with a thumb up your ass waiting for spawns could be time spent on rainstorm+ moving on with life.

ground zero is bad for it, the swap has lots but the cover is awkward to use, the grasslands area is also the same since a lot of times the titans can get angles on you you can't cover from.
They're different strategies for different situations. Any Engie who stays still during worm/imp lord/elder attacks don't know how to adapt and should stick to spray-and-praying as Mul-T.
How do we actually fix Arti?
Make Ice Wall easier to aim, make it act as cover, or otherwise find a way to make it more useful than it currently is.

I want it to be like Huntress' arrow rain where, once you have a bit of practice, you can press the button and immediately get the AoE where you want it. The ice wall's shape and the lack of a consistent aiming angle prevent that against any hitbox smaller than an imp lord.

Where are you getting this? I know it was hinted at in one of the logs, but his death hasn't been confirmed from what I have seen, and I certainly haven't seen Hopoo comment on it.
If anything, I think the Enforcer would actually work better in 3D than 2D. Having to shield in different directions adds another dimension to his character, just like having to aim in three dimensions to shoot. I didn't even like Enforcer in RoR1, but I see potential for how he could work in this game.

Here's the fix: take Mul-T's dash, replace impact with trail, trail spread quickly to cover significant area to the sides. Use it to trailblaze with teammates or encircle groups for easy killing/infection.

The acid trail literally doesn't work unless you're the host, enemies will appear to take damage and get stunned by it in the Acrid player's client but for everyone else the hits simply won't register. Not only does this drastically reduce the character's damage output, it also results in very, very frequent death because the stun (and lack thereof) creates desync between where the acrid player sees the enemies and their actual position.
I think it's capped to 9999 damage though

It will be fixed in time. The way the director works is it attempts to spawn enemies that would challenge you and if it doesn't think an enemy would challenge you it just won't spawn an enemy. So if you're getting to the point where enemies stop spawning just be proud that you're better than the best the game has to offer. This will be fixed as hopoo adds more enemies and enemy types.
Headstompers are actually a pretty powerful nuke. Also, no fall damage and higher first jump are nice utility to have.

Headstompers can help you cheat your way through difficult bosses you aren't geared up for. Much bigger difference than the occasional burn effect or (non-healable) 50% shield.

Definitely not the worst. The shield persists forever, so every shield elite you kill boosts your health pool by 50% basically forever (until you get hit). This makes any character a lot tankier. The fire effect is also really good.
Headstompers and N'Kuhana's are the worst (N'Kuhana is only good on engie).

Tips on playing Artificer with a friend? It seems that unless I get something broken, by map 4 or so, my dmg falls off, survivability is non existent, mobility is items only. I can easily do Monsoon on Commando, Engi or Huntress but Artificer I struggle on any difficulty.

The bowling balls it rolls at you are disgusting, just ignoring and rolling over cover. And if you get hit by one, you better have a defensive skill since they slow you to a crawl on hit.
They ALWAYS tend to stack on eachother if theres more than 1 dunestrider, and if they both decide to succ, you are dead, too bad.
But overall, my biggest issue is their healing. Every other boss in the game can be taken down eventually with skill and patience, regardless of how strong you are at the moment. But if you’re on a run where you’re below average damage and a dunestrider set shows up as the boss, you’re fucked. You end up having to get the teleporter to 99% so shit stops spawning, just so you can eliminate the endlessly spawning health packs for the dunestrider. Overloading eleites are the worst for this, especially the tanky as fuck ones like the bighorn bison. They are just regenerating health packs for the dunestrider, the fight is a fucking disaster and i would rather fight overloading worms. At least when i shoot a worm it stays fucking damaged.

Dunestriders and Worms as a Mercenary. Both of these require the Merc to play extremely passively so you don't get WHIRRR'd to death or just take contact damage to death from worms. It is really annoying to have to play this way as a Merc.

Is the merc good now that blazing isn't bullshit?
Everyone looks to be saying frost is strong, but I found charged to be more threatening. They're "what if enemies had sticky bombs too" now that cleaves off more of your health than the attack itself after a quick delay, like old blaze was.
In a way they're even more annoying, because the red stands out more so you knew to look out for them. I can never even tell the other two elite types apart until after either I'm already hit and bombed, or it's dead and I see the frost sphere and have to evade it. The blue and white are very similar in the midst of all the chaos.
Did it manage to find all the dlls it needs?

If you haven't gotten any Infusions or Cautious Slugs, then it's worth it to pick one up. They stack really well, adding loads of defense to carry you into the one shot zone where healing won't matter anymore.
