Like, a lot of the other popular ballot characters that didn't make it in at least got compensated somehow. Some of them got assist trophies (Krystal, Isaac, Shovel Knight), notable spirit battles (Geno, Shantae) and as well as Mii Fighters outfit pieces (Dixie, Isaac again).

Literally the only thing Bandana Dee got was just as an enhancement for the regular Waddle Dee spirit, he didn't even get a spirit battle.

Palutena is the second most important character in Kid Icarus, which is a classic NES Era IP that is literally named after her in Japan, and played a huge important role in the series' very successful relaunch which released right around the time they were starting to consider characters for the next Smash game. She also had potential fighting style, a unique gimmick (one which albiet didn't make it into ultimate, but still), and a fun personality to boot. On top of all that, more female representation is Smash was in high demand and she fit the bill while also being a legacy character with a lot of history AND while bringing something new to the table.

If you can't see how she got in or why it was justified, you're delusional.

Several bad points here already. Palutena is important to Kid Icarus....but nothing else. The series itself is still incredibly niche without any real justification for it getting another character (Punch Out, Pikmin, Splatoon, and Xenoblade for example all have better reason to have multiple characters and are still stuck at one) Also you're assuming that the first two games have ANY significance in Sakurais eyes. Less than 1% of KIs representation is from a non-Uprising title and that 1% is just a generic "KI" that doesn't rep any game in particular.

His design is the best it has ever been. He's been one of the smallest Metroid bosses since the NES era. He's not even a garbage character. He just needs a few alterations like weight, frame data, and maybe a jump or up b tweak. He doesn't lack character nor personality and he's far less bland in Smash than most of the FE cast.

Inkling was the first one but everyone expected them and their reveal was a simple 10 second spot where the Smash logo showed up in their eyes. Ridley has been a point of contention for nigh 15 years. He's been debated and asked for the roster since the Melee intro with Samus. They knew showing off the most debated character in Smash history would send the fanbase into over drive. Nobody who cares about Smash and Metroid gave a damn what tweaks he'd require to be in. They knew he'd take some effort but they wanted them to take the effort and do it because of the love for Metroid and Ridleys status as Samus nemesis.
