And some semblence of difficulty, instead of having infinite stamina, regenerating health, and resupplies and a helicopter exit available virtually anywhere with no risk.
The overworld becomes extra obsolete when you realize that soldiers volunteer for you army no matter what you do, and the vast bulk of your materials come from automatic base mining and event FOBs instead of the litter you pick up in freeroam/mission.

They don't actually. In the staff list you have a tab with former soldiers, this is mostly KIA but also has ones who refused recruitment and even ones who topped themselves.
