Almost seven years pass and we find out someone had the code and a working server the entire time. It was private and invite only with micro-transactions to fund itself and evade lawsuit by remaining below the radar? Sure, makes enough sense. However, turns out the majority of all the emulation and spiritual successors were in on this charade, actively squelching, banning and blacklisting anyone who said anything across every fan site from here to Timbuktu. It was to such an extent that it was - and is - a cult, revering him as some kind of god. Not only this, but no real efforts were being made by these fronts, as they solely existed to pocket the money people were giving them to further go towards a sever and to line his pockets. Worst part? Any other efforts that were legitimately, the server owner and his gang were actively sabotaging while also claiming it to be impossible to get an emulation of the game working. He made "Paragon Chat" to be the supposed closest possibility to a private server, which in reality turns out to be a tiny slice of the server he's running. He had been actively lying to everyone to their faces, stealing their money and creating extreme excuses for it all and is now making out the people calling him out on his shit as the bad guys.

More like an RPG system. In CoH all your powers were...well, the powers you picked from your powersets. You didn't have weapon skills like DCUO where you attacked with your mouse clicks and then only had a few powers on your limited action tray.

Warburg is a free for all, but you can invite anybody to your team to activate friendly fire for team fights. PvP was very popular for a while but after a certain patch, a lot of PvP players bitched and left for really shitty reasons. I never played DCUO but CoH is a ton of fun to travel through. There's no instant travel, you either Super Jump, Super Speed, Teleport (Not as OP as it sounds) or Fly. Character movement was extremely responsive and you could make sick jumps off of street poles or air conditioning units, or even jump off of window sills poking out of the sides of buildings to scale them. If your mission location is 3 cities away, too fucking bad. You figure out the quickest way to your destination, and jump over as many buildings as it takes until you get to the train station. I can get keeping the source code server to yourself and running your own private server. You want to avoid C&Ds and only allow "trusted" people, though it seems counter-intuitive for a MMO and is still kind of a scummy move to not just give out the source code. But whatever. The game had just shut down. If the source code magically appeared on pirate bay a week after the 50 employees who created said source code were fired, they would be the first people to suspect and charge. He gave it to a "pillar of the community" who was a skilled coder and helped the community for many years during the game's life and had personal conversations with many of the staff. He could have held onto the code for a year or 2 until things seemed to quiet down, then release the code once all of the developers had long since moved on.
Instead, he saved the code for himself, made money off of it, pointed fingers at the playerbase and called them tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists every time one of his server members tried to leak, and after eventually being outed for the piece of shit that he is, he's now trying to play the victim card.

I did, and what suprised me the most is that yer lot doesn't have a private server running years after its deathbed. All I see is excuse after excuse of why the community failed to act on that. Its character creator was more in depth than the sims with mods. It was never ending. The powers were fun, animations were great, fighting felt solid with none of that auto attack bullshit. The missions were fun af with groups of strangers but that comes with most mmo environments. It just had a polish to it that let you be what ever the fuck you wanted to be. It was extremely well balanced for most of its life, is notorious for having the best character creator of any MMO ever, the gameplay is very responsive, animations are well polished, it took many risks in game design and did them very well. Build variety was borderline endless, the archetypes all provide uses and so many different playstyles, while also offering the holy trinity, but also doesn't shove the trinity down your throat. 8 support players could burn through content even faster than 8 hyper-meta DPS builds due to the potential debuff stacking. Mastermind is still, to this day, considered one of the most fun minion master classes in MMOs. It's also the only game where I've actually enjoyed playing the thief/assassin class and actually felt like a stealth class.

I'm positively baffled that anyone would take Leo's side. For six years he lied and did nothing to ensure the continuity of the game other than keep /his/ private server a secret. He could have given the source code to anyone in those six years and chose to keep it to himself. If he didn't want the burden of potentially being pinched by a C&D he shouldn't have accepted the code in the first place or passed it to someone else.

It introduced new characters who eventually fell from grace/rose to the challenge, made some existing minor NPCs like Miss Thystle switch roles, added the alignment mechanic which a ton of people loved, and in issue 25 we were even going to see Scirrocco betray Recluse to team up with the heroes.
