Enemies don't just get more HP they get different attacks and spells. They're essentially new enemies that they didn't bother to reskin.

in a normal rpg i'd agree but ff8 is so crazy it doesn't work like that, there are spells to raise or lower the lvl on an enemy into different ranges so you can get specific items to drop from them, or you just turn off encounters. or you do a no junction challenge run if you want. there's so much shit to do that if you are just playing it straight like a standard rpg then you miss the point of all the systems.

FFVIII can only truly be appreciated by turbo autists. If you don't like completely breaking a game in retarded ways then it is really just a mediocre JRPG. If you like being able to make an endgame party halfway through the first disc by grinding cards and farming rare drops, it's perfect. It's not for everyone, but it scratches an itch not many other games can.

They lost the code on all the games they made for the PS1. Hard drives were extremely small back then and there was no reason to keep the files for finished games. That's why new releases for VII and IX still have the same blurry pre-rendered backgrounds. None of those original files exist anymore. No one knows why they haven't rereleased VIII but it's probably because of copyright issues with Eyes on Me or they don't think it would be well received.

I doubt that, IX had Melodies Of Life intact in it's HD release. Square is not Konami, they know better than to fuck with license copyright.

Nothing is more unbearable than spamming shitty summons, drawing ad infinitum or perma-yellowing through the vapid plothole wasteland that VII was, much less when it has probably the worst roster of forgettable garbage characters. When every single character in the game is a Vincent/Amarant-tier of pointless except the forced romance damsel in distress who serves solely as a liability to the storyline, you are doing something vastly wrong.
People complain about characters like Yuffie or Freya having no reason to continue fighting with the party, yet somehow forget the literal only reason anyone in FF8 is even there is because "lawl GF amnesia" moment.

I've never played a final fantasy game before. Which ones should I play first? Which should I avoid?

I've finally started playing FF8 on steam after putting it off for literally decades (I had it on PS1 but could never get myself to play it)
I'm not even halfway through the game and I already think anyone who actually likes this game has genuine brain damage

-Terrible textures, WAY pixelated. Literally worse than FF7, an older game (at least you can mod it on PC)
-Tons of absolutely awkward animations. Characters try to point at something but barely point in the direction of what they're trying to point at because the animation can only play at a certain angle
-Constant awkward pauses in conversations
-Constant awkward pauses after walking into a room and having to wait for someone to start talking as you just fucking stand there
-Constant sequences where you just get dropped into an empty room with your party and you have to go around talking to each of them not knowing who is the trigger for the next scene
-Character models are fucking broken at the hip, someone bending forward makes it looks like their entire spine is disconnected
-Being forced to play as Laguna absolutely breaks pacing
-Zell is an absolute non-character retard
-Why is Squall such a fucking asshole
-Why did Squall sperg the fuck out over "I DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT ME IN THE PAST TENSE AAAAA" but then it wasn't brought up again and the story just continued

-Combat is so fucking slow, why does the ATB pause during another characters attack even while on Active?
-On the first train to Delling, after entering it the scene did not continue. You could talk to both of your party members and interact with the door leading further into the train but the train would not start. You had to WALK OUT THE DOOR LEADING OUT OF THE TRAIN for the scene to continue (your remaining party members would stop you from walking out) and only then would the train start. What the fuck was this about. Why the fuck would I think "hey why doesn't this train start, let me go and exit the train that I already paid for maybe that'll make it start"
-Quistis fucking abadons post just to go apologize WHAT
-Why the fuck does the door to Rinoas room not close instantly, but is instead on a timer just so 3 of our party members can get stuck in the room. Absolutely retarded fucking story element
-So they're just gonna handwave Squall getting impaled on a fucking icicle
-Why are limit breaks locked to low HP
-Why the fuck are the SeeD exams hidden in the Tutorial

It's because big theme of the game is clinging onto memories of the past and Squall's entire identity was shaped by one memory of Ellon abandoning him in orphanage. He didn't even remember who Ellone was and times they spent together, but he remembered the feeling of abandonment he felt and how he wanted to never feel that again. So of course he didn't want to become something like that to someone either now that he was forced to open up to a large group of people, he doesn't want to be missed and leave void in someone's memory like Ellone did in his.

Played 1-15 last year, avoided the mmo's so here's what I'll say.

You don't really need to play 1, 2 or 3. They're alright games, but there's no real point. If you want to you can play them all, it'd take you around 60 hours overall. Play the PS1 version of 1/2 and your choice for 3, I'd say PSP version but NES is alright.

I'd say you should really start with 4, that's a really good game and a great starting point for the series. Took everything good from 1, 2 and 3 and slapped a really good story onto it along with great characters. 5 you can skip, but it has an interesting combat system so you might want to give it a try. I personally didn't like it much. 6 is pretty good as well it has it's faults and I don't think it's as good as 4 but it's a really cool game and really pushes the SNES imo.

7, 8 and 9 are all really good games. They're all really unique, have great music and really made me respect the PS1 more than I did beforehand. Play them all.

10 is kinda a downgrade to FF imo, very linear which ruined it for me, but otherwise a fine game. 12 I really enjoyed, it has an amazing world and atmosphere and the gameplay is a weird MMO type thing that plays itself. I loved it though. 13 is even more linear than 10 and as a game it's terrible, but everything else is amazing, visuals, music, graphics. Play it for as long as you can stand it. 15 is alright, it's more a bro tier adventure than a FF game. Driving around in the car was a lovely experience.

tl;dr 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 are must plays.

GBA ports. With sound patches if you emulate. The remakes for IV are okay but these are the best if you want good versions closest to the original. Avoid the mobile versions at all cost.

The PC and console rereleases of VII and IX are supposed to be pretty good. They have fast forward too which can be nice for random battles. VIII never got a rerelease but is available on Steam.

HD remasters for both. Not a big fan of X so I don't know anything about it, but Zodiac Age is a perfect game.

For 4, play it on PSP. It's actually the one PSP port that's actually good for a FF game, the only problem is that going from 4 to 5/6 will be a downgrade since 5/6 have terrible PSP ports and the GBA counterpart (with the sound/brightness mod) is the best you can get. I'd say for 4 give the GBA and PSP ports some research, PSP is great but going to the next game will be jarring.

For 5/6 play the GBA port with the sound/brightness mod.

Apart from that, 7/8/9/10/12/13/15 can all be played on PC and pirated with ease, check the vidya pastebin on /t/. 7/8/9 can be modded to hell and back to look really good. I played 7 with some graphical mods (just for characters) and it looked really good, but if that's not your style, then play them without. PC versions have a lot of nice features like 4x speedup and cheats (if that's your style)
