I also am in this situation and its amazing, not as good as a direct connection in all but a select few situations but miles better than wifi.

I just place every single thing I use in recent time, launchers, folders, images, shortcuts, etc. all on the desktop and every month I put it in its own separate folder and then I have a clean desktop again.

Anything is better than Google Chrome, no other browser hogs as many resources and invades as much privacy as that thing. VLC is objectively worse than WMP yes.
