They historically sell consoles at a loss, I think the PS4 was barely a loss if any at all. The Xbox One, because of the Kinect, sold at a loss even at 500 dollars. These days its about getting them on PS+, PS Now, Gamepass, XBL Gold etc than making money on console sales.
Especially when people are moving to digital sales more and more, and bigger/faster storage drivers just facilitate that.

Reminder the PS4 Pro advertises itself as "4K" console and yet it doesn't come close. At best it renders 1080p - 1440p and upscales to a 4K resolution by using a "checkerboard rendering" technique.

Here is a quick run down on how Sony achieved bc on all their systems so far

Ps2 - has the ps1 cpu chip inside it and it usually uses it as a i/o controler when not using it for bc, the gpu emulates the ps1 gpu during ps1 gaming

PSP - uses a super up MIPS cpu (same architecture and family as the ps1 cpu) to this day is the most accurate hardware solution to play ps1 games outside of a ps1, all because it has the same architecture

Ps3 - all ps1 games are emulated via software, this is why some games will just not work as the emulator is not 100% compatible with all ps1 disk games
Ps2 was first achieved by having the Emotion Engine (ps2 cpu) in the board and using the ps3's rsx to run a emulated gpu (60gb model fat ps3 only)
Later ps3 did not have the EE chip inside, so the solution was running the games via emulation, either by allowing the user to run any ps2 game via disk (80gb ps3) or via super specialised emulator packs (ps2 legacy games you can purchase in the psn store)
PSP emulation is achieved via emulation and is super buggy (only used for the mini psp games anyway)

Ps vita - straights up emulates a WHOLE psp inside it and uses this to emulate ps1 games too

Ps4 - similar to the ps2 legacy ports for the ps3, games comes with either their own emulator in the game pack or use a system native emulator with special settings, the user is not allowed to freely use this

Having similar architecture helps a fuck lot, but you can also just throw computing power into the problem till it runs too

I have a whole PS4 physical and Blu ray library, If PS5 upscales and has 4k blu ray drive, i might buy a new OLED 4K, I've been using 1080p since 2008.I'm pretty much cool as long as they call it PlayStation 5.

They went full emulation to save manufacturing costs but it wasn't full 100%. Very minimal people even used the feature so they just stopped supporting it so they didn't have people bitching about the small percentage of games that didn't play correctly. You can literally activate it on ps3 slim consoles.
