Episode 1 of the anime or Castle of Cagstrolio if you wanna watch a film.

It's all over the place.
Just sort through them until you find the era of lupin you like.

The later stuff sans the most recent anime are gritty rather than campy/silly.

Pick and Choose. The only base thing you need to know is the crew. Lupin's a gentleman thief and yet also a perv for the girls. Jigen is his right hand wheel man and the guy with the gun who focuses on the task at hand. Goemon is a ronin who attempts to keep his own honorable code while they steal. Fujiko is a femme fatale who focuses on her own needs over that of the group. She will betray and be welcomed back pretty often and loves to toy with Lupin.

After that it's more of what genre you like. The original series is more action and Lupin has a green jacket. Lupin's second series mixes action with comedy and is generally loved by anyone just getting started. This has Red Jacket Lupin. Then Lupin's third series was more wacky shit than anything and a Pink jacket.

Most of the OVAs and movies work off of one of these 3 versions as a base character. Lupin's 4th series is a hybrid of Blue and Red jacket styles, but it's own thing. You started off with Lupin having been a busy thief from the previous runs and gets tricked into getting married to an heiress whose even crazier than he is. Fun, but not as good as Blue or Red imo.

You can pretty much just jump anywhere, its more of a silly episodic comedy about a group of thieves out rousing everybody. Don't know about the manga but the anime is often done by different directors who also tend to change things up a bit in terms of ton and story. Lupin wears different coats based on who the director is/was and so people refer to a Lupin series by the color of his coats.

The original actual has pretty good art and animation for its time, Miyazaki worked on a lot of the episodes, and it's relatively short. I would just start there.

I'd say start with Castle of Cagliostro, it's one of the first Ghibli movies and is a great self contained story.

I remember it had an arcade game where you played as Jigen and Lupin and the gameplay was basically shoot anything that moves

it's episodic so you can jump in anywhere and be fine, except for the woman called fujiko. a lot of people swear by the first series where lupin wears a green jacket. it's a bit more serious than other iterations, but aside from a few standout episodes I personally didn't love it. I fell in love with lupin with the colossal second season (155 episodes) where he wears a red jacket. it's a bit goofier and light hearted and the dub is actually really good
