Yeah. One of the main characters is Cid's grandson Mid who tells everyone about what happened in FFV. The issue was that FFV hadn't come out in the west yet so nobody really got the connection. The anime was picked up because of the FFVII craze and people were disappointed because it was unrecognizable. They also translated the names differently than FFV eventually did. Bartz became Bats and Exdeath became Exodus.

SNES with english patch or GBA with better sound patch
SNES has higher res graphics and better sound quality by default but has less content, GBA adds a dungeon, a few extra bosses, and 4 new jobs
I played through GBA version unpatched and it was fine but a lot of people dislike the GBA sound quality, hence the recommendation for the sound patch

The GBA's SNES ports are all really annoying to look at because the saturation got jacked up to account for the original model's lack of a backlight. That alone would make me recommend the SNES or PS1 versions, translation differences be damned.

Even in the NES and SNES days when they used Amano's designs for portraits it was stylistically changed to suit the needs of the console. Like in IV, the portraits on the menu screen look like the amano designs but they're colored and styled in a way that makes them unique. The gba versions look like shit with their pale faces and weird proportions. They just don't transition well to sprites which is why the overworld sprites were designed in a way to translate amano's character designs to the limitations of the console.

Well yes, but there's also the issue that in the old games you would either never see them at all or if you did it was off to the menu. In the GBA ports you have to see them every time someone says anything.

Legend of the Crystals is a fucking trip, loved that OVA back in the day. A absolute hilarious English Voice Cast that is still stuck in my head today. I know people don't like the humorous nature of it, but I loved it, had that right type of balance for a fun adventure. Very disappointed that we've never even seen a rerelease of it in any way (I have the VHS Boxset though). Loved that the GBA translation of V had the same-ish tone.
