The DS and PS2 were cheap and had an almost never ending supply of top tier games. The PS2 could also play DVDs too which was a bonus.

The day I went to buy my PS3 (launch day) at Circuit City, the PS3s were past the Blu-ray players, the Blu-ray players were $900.

PS3 and XBOX360 costs the same here in Bananaland, the actual problem was, people who bought a 360 had to buy a second one because the first got RROD, then got banned for using pirated games. The PS3 had free online multiplayer and after 2009, there were simply NO GAMES worthy playing in the XBOX while PS3 kept launching new exclusives. Piracy became a reality in PS3 and people went buying it more and more.

PS4 has an absolutely gargantuan library of exclusives/late PC-ported games compared to Xbone. Even if each one only convinces a fraction of the userbase to buy in, it adds up eventually.

Also, Xbone had absolutely poisonous PR early in the cycle and was a weaker and more expensive box. Even now, the only clear advantages it has over PS4 are UHD Blu Ray playback and its controller layout, which are not significant enough for the average gamer to choose it over the console with almost 5x as many exclusives.

Early on, the 360 annihilated the PS3. It wasn't even a fucking debate. However, around 2008/2009 (I'm not fucking googling this) Microsoft started pushing the "New Xbox Experience" and pouring resources in to the more community related stuff, which isn't bad on paper, but the games stopped coming out. Shortly after, they went all in on the Kinect and the rest is history.

The kinect alone nearly destroyed the xbox brand for two generations

The only games I emulated for it were Disgaea 2, Suikoden 5 and TSS LPP.
