I know, but with references to many of the events of Van Buren, (such as The Ciphers, Fort Abandon, Dogtown, Blackfoots/hangdogs, etc) it seems that NV treated Van Buren as the true F3.

Basically he didn’t like the direction both NCR and Legion were headed, believing them to be unfit for a stable future for the Mojave. After finding a place called “The Divide”, he recognizes the small town as his home, a place where America can rise again from the ashes. The NCR finds this town and annexs it. The courier, at some point, delievers a eyebot from Navarro to the town so NCR soldiers could study it. After the courier leaves, the eyebot, containing a key to activate the nuclear missiles deep within the silos, turns on and activates all the bombs within the silos. Ulysses barely survives, and after seeing the town he once called his home be ravaged to nuclear disaster, decides to get revenge on the courier for destroying his home.

I really, really fucking miss being able to be interested in and excited about this series. But there is only so many times you can play the classics. But with 800 hours in New Vegas I just couldn't find anything else in it. Hell, I can even to a degree enjoy Fallout 3 for all its flaws, as you can feel that some of the devs had some spark of passion left, and probably had nearly as much time in it as NV. But Fallout 4 is just empty of any passion or energy, and when they stopped even pretending to give a shit about the lore. The 76 pre-release trailer/presentation is where my fandom actually died.

There is just no future in being a fan of Fallout. At this point they are just some old games that gave me some of the best gaming times of my life, but ones that I've bled dry, with nothing to follow them.

A lot of Van Buren lore got recycled and reworked into New Vegas, and New Vegas makes passing references to places and groups in Van Buren.

I'd say that anything that New Vegas adapted (like the Boulder Dome into the Big MT or the Hanged Man into the Burned Man) or that doesn't contradict the New Vegas lore (i.e the NCR being that far East, the Legion being small time slavers etc etc) is probably background canon.

I like the killstealing fucker, sure, but he has the personality of a plank. I'm full on /pol/ when it comes to degenerates, but oddly, I like Arcade most out of all the base companions. Not only is he one of the few companions who will join you just because you need help (low int) but he has interesting dialogs, doesn't shove his shlong/sexuality in your face, and he's tied to best faction with a compelling reason to be wary of the NCR.

That said, if we can include DLC companions, no one in the entire series will beat Joshua for me. His story is facinating and I hate that, no matter what, he ends up living out his years with a group of tribals. The glorious fucker deserved more of a continuing storyline than that. Thank God for mods.

Ulysses is meant to be the 'shadow' of the player in many ways. He's described by Avellone as a Level 50 PC that just walked different roads, and it's shown really clearly.

The Courier is from the West, and has walked its roads extensively. Ulysses is from the East, and walked its roads extensively. Ulysses's story begins at Hoover Dam, the Couriers ends there.

The Courier puts a stop to Elijah's madness at Sierra Madre and frees the people there, Ulysses is the one who sends Elijah there full well knowing the madness would consume him. The Courier breaks the White Legs and saves the New Canaanites and the tribes of Zion. Ulysses was the one who rose the White Legs up and led them to massacre New Canaan and hunt the tribes of Zion. The Courier breaks the Think Tank out of their loop and gives them a glimpse of sanity and peace, guiding the Big MT to something good. Ulysses trashes the Big Empty, throws the Think Tank into a loop of insanity and uses the technology of the crater to destroy mankind's future (the knowledge of the Divide's missiles.) Ulysses and the Courier are two sides of the coin of history.

Ulysses is a tribal who's culture was one of putting so much meaning into the mundane that even the way they twisted their hair told stories. He's a vagabond who had his home taken from him and his faith in nations and cultures shook, one day found a place free of all the chaos and anger that dominated his life and gave actual hope for something new, a new history, and then one day this wanderer passes through and wipes out all of it, changes the face of history, in a single action.

The Courier's effect on Ulysses is twofold. The first is that he learnt that one man can make or break history in a single action, and the second is the desire to do the same to the Courier. Ulysses wants to change history in a single action, and take away the Courier's "history" in the West. His aggro to the Courier is a jab at the Fallout protagonist archetype.
