Super Metroid feels like you're discovering things yourself by accident, even though it's usually where the creators intended you go.

Castlevania never captured this. Can't vouch for Hollow Knight but from what I've read it's difficult enemies that bar progress so it's not much better.

Hollow Knight is quite different from castlevania even though there's a chance they were more inspired by something like SOTN. It's much less linear too.

Super Metroid was definitely more mysterious than Hollow Knight in some ways, with suddenly entering an area with no fancy title appearing, but instead noticeably different graphics and spooky music playing.
