city of heroes was one of those really old games that just never seemed to get anyone working on a private server. anyone who ever tried would always feed out the same spew that the code was spaghetti and that it was nigh impossible. any discussion that tried to say otherwise would be discredited and downvoted out of their respective communities. it turns out that the main person pushing that entire idea was someone who has been gathering people capable of reverse engineering the game from the server data and code he acquired, this means it would be an exact replica of the game right as it went down, something most emulators strive for but take ages to succeed could be done in little time with the information he has. and he chose to keep this all a secret and only slowly let in a small select few.

I played CoH hardcore from launch till shutdown. It remains my favorite MMO, and indeed favorite game bar none, of all time.
Knowing that a fully functional emulator existed all this time, and it was kept secret by these fucking assholes, just makes me so sad.
And it has all my old fucking characters on it! My fucking characters exist, characters I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on, characters that I agonized over when my laptop with all my screenshots was lost...

When you are being threatened and hidden by the mods of the biggest platform to potentially get help or funds for a project like that it can be hard. I only played CoH as a kid, when I was too poor to afford a subscription based game. So I just played the demo over and over, making new heroes and ideas and running around. I loved the atmosphere of the game and the feeling of being a hero or villain, even if I never got the opportunity to delve into the deep of the game.

I just want to be able to play it again and experience it's full breadth.

But investors will want to know how the fuck they let an IP of theirs, even a dead one, get leaked out into the internet and continued to be used with no permission or financial compensation. TL;DR
A NCSoft/City of Heroes employee grabbed stole all the files, HDDs, CDs, Jump Drives, and a few literal servers - all filled with everyones character data, data for the game and how to remake it into a private server. He then hands it to this guy (his name and information is being dumped constantly now... ) instead of saving it or working on it for everyone to enjoy and play he instead keeps it a secret and invites only friends and family, and their friends - the problem with this is that if anyone leaks the information he now has all their accounts, characters, items and information so if one person leaks he deletes their account and all the people they invited into the Secret Server for CoH
This same person, the person who owns and controls this Secret Server also apparently owned the City of Heroes Sub-Reddit, in which he and his moderators went above and beyond to delete, perma-ban anyone discussing a possible City of Heroes Private/Public Unoffical Server to play on and anyone to mention the secret server were dealt with quickly
The newest information is that SEGS, and a few other City of Hero projects were in on it with him, giving him their collected data and information to keep his secret server stable and under control. On top of all of this he forced people to give him donations or he kept their exp gains extremely low and if people donated to him he made the exp normal and gave them exp bonuses

After all of this there are new people surfacing and admitting that they were part of it, one stating that funds from the creation of City of Titans, one of three or four super-hero MMOs being created has apparently been a front for this server and all their funds from the Kickstarter, Paetron, Donations from PayPal have all been siphoning to this man.
