How do I remake a game without removing its soul?

Do what the crash team did. Be faithful to the art style and put effort in.

idk about you guys but i'd fuck that bunny

What if i think both have soul and all this thread is here to do is to make people angry at each other?

>I judge soul on how fuckable the girls are
And the Spyro remake was actually good. Hell, I wouldn’t be opposed to them making a sequel.

Half good, half bad. Fucking Activision banking on other people's talent ripping off nerds

I want to break down that Faun's door, if you catch my drift.

I don't see OP's point, both the Spyro and Crash remakes seem pretty "soul" to me (even though "soul" is an arbitrary term used by idiots), both were clearly made by people who loved the original games and tried the best they could, under the given circumstances.

Attached: 1541452253278.png (1280x1440, 1.01M)

Too bad that Yea Forums still considers it ‘soulless’
The better question is what remakes can be considered as having soul?

Attached: 1482715684806.jpg (900x952, 537K)

they look way better like proper furbait. its full of soul if you ask me.

>clearly made by people who loved the original games and tried the best they could
Spyro was rushed as fuck, models were being outsourced to anyone and everyone (indians, fans, etc), which resulted in a wildly inconsistent artstyle. Here are the studios listed under development support in the credits.

>Sanzaru Games Inc (did all of YotD)
>Kitazaru Games Inc
>Sledgehammer Games
>Vicarious Visions
>Airborn Studios
>The Carwash Inc
>Counterpunch Studios
>Forge Studios
>FXville Inc
>The Gfactory
>Ghostbot Inc
>Lakshya Digital
>Mad Snow Studios
>Mercenary Technology
>Omnomi Workshop
>Original Force
>Rabcat
>Squeeze Studio
>Technicolor Animation & Games
>Virtuos

one loud idiot =/= Yea Forums

Also, soul is a very devious word, because it is neither objective nor measurable. Soul is whatever I can convince enough people it is.

They made all those female hot as fuck so it's okay.

Wait, did they replace Hurricos' pits with water?

ORAS is definetly souless.

Outsourcing is a debatable choice, but how is it inconsistent?

Because every level had multiple artists working on the environments, characters etc with seemingly no communication or unifying direction as you'd usually have in an in-house art team. For example the guy who did the pic related fan models got contacted to do a few models for the games (e.g. Tara in the OP screenshot) and while his models are good on their own, they simply don't follow the same aesthetic as the rest of the game, that is, every level and character feels wildly different from the other artstyle-wise.

Right has more soul

I would remove Achmed from this list

i want to kiss garrosh

How cherry-picked is this? Because, not being familiar with the original, it looks to me that they set every level at dusk so they could desaturate and brown up the fucking color pallet.

Not cherry-picked in any way, it's every level of the first hub world in the second game, from the default position you start the level in, so no disadvantageous angles or anything.

Why did they get rid of the grit that went into the graphics on the ps3?

What's the game on the left?

Chrono Cross.

alright all of you shut the fuck up and post pornographic images of that rabbit and maybe the blue goat as well

>new thing bad

3 was rushed if you couldn't tell.

Attached: large[1].jpg (2048x1152, 217K)

what is "soul"?

i think that low fidelity might be part of it, because our brain fills in the gaps. the amount of semiotic information we are recieving is more or less the same, but when it is low-fi there are a lot more gaps for your brain to fill in.

i think that the originals have more soul because there is an appearance that there is more to them than they appear, whereas with the newer versions that sense is gone.

How does this even happen?

texture filtering was a mistake

Attached: seals.jpg (1024x770, 150K)

next gen!!!!

this can't be real

Some texturing programs like Substance designer have built in tools that let you quickly fill in any polygon(s) similar to the paint bucket tool in Paint. If the UV map of the model is not perfectly straight as it should be in this case, it will result in aliasing, which can quickly be fixed just by editing the mask.

That arch model is also stretched, and is the same model used for the portal leading to the world.

I meant Substance Painter. Need sleep.

>what is "soul"?
It's literally nostalgia. That's all there is to it. Every day we have this same fucking thread, where some user posts the comparisons of how the designs for the old game were made (focus groups and marketers dictating to designers) versus how the designs for the new game were made (designers spent a laborious amount of time cross referencing original models, drawing out a huge number of sketches by hand, working with modellers to create how a dragon in the Spyro universe was supposed to feel, going back to the drawing board, etc).

It checks literally every box that MUH-SOULfags say is what "actually" makes a game soul, and the original doesn't. It's nostalgia, and nothing more.

game look bad GOOD
game look good BAD

>Lara Croft mouse
>don't give her the giant tits in the remake
jesus christ what the fuck

New game looks good but I think its a bit overkill to make every girl in the game A or B cup

To me, soul is the quality old graphics had as hallmarks of intelligent art direction. When you don't have limitless resources, you have to be clever about what you're creating, the techniques used to get the right color mood across. When every smug fuck that comes out of art school can use the entire gamut of game creation, they just get lazy as all fuck because it can look ""good"" with minimal effort through ""realism"".

That bunny is fucking cute as fuck, but they covered up her shoulders for some reason? Too bad, the neck, shoulders, chest and back are the most sensual, kissable and caress-able parts of a girl!

She's probably based on nu-Lara.

Never played any of the games so I can say this with an unbiased perspective. The new graphics look better. "Soul" in this case is just your shitty nostalgia.

I give you that the fairy and mouse girl look too different, but the yoyo girl improved a lot. And the new bunny girl is tons better in all aspects.

but i've never played a spyro game and i think the original looks much better. they used much less but achieved much more. i don't have any nostalgia and i think the ps1 was a shit system with bad games anyways

this

This is the answer for non-brainlets.

Lmao right looks like kiddy shit nigga
Fuck outta here fore ya finna gettin dabbed on

right = soul
left = soulless

How the fuck did they ruin his character after ff7? What were they thinking?

I think it comes down to they only got 1 year to make the remake, aswell as one was created to bring to life a creative vision, while the other exists to make the already established one more shiny. Also 15 people at Insomniac had better skills in art/programming than 30 different studios and freelancers on two decade old hardware.

Attached: Screenshot (30).png (1366x768, 712K)

1 was the only one that got a good remake honestly

How come it's always the late 90s in these SOUL-threads?

Is it because the tech was awkward but the devs tried their hardest?

Half of those look much, much better than the originals though.
How can you look at Bianca and that faun and actually think they look better in the originals?

N. Sane Trilogy is the definitive version of the Crash games. Everything looks so much better and it feels much better too, and this is coming from someone who lived and breathed Crash since he was a kid.

I'M BATMAAAAAAN.

OLD

Reignited Trilogy was soulless but for the most part it was a pretty solid remake aside from some missteps in 3. I never noticed how rushed it was.
It's no N. Sane Trilogy though.

The bunny is a lot hotter in the remake.

Why do games kinda lost their unique artsyles in the remakes and get more generic ?

youtube.com/watch?v=igpOzhAkKhw
The most probably , also they could take more risks since budgets were way smaller, they loved pushing consoles to the limit and even doing seemengly impossible ports

Attached: 2r8F9rJF8BjUhkRM5SrukdzuMRYTDTY8qH8x3SYCtfGB9WYFsRiYmtwPR79rjp7daWz1n9zsuMiZVmZyxjDbTsndUR2TQ8LQ8FJu (500x370, 2.26M)

Crash still had a really unique art style in the remake.

The bunny has tons of more soul, she's way more expressive and spunky than that goblin on the left with those dead vacant eyes.

not the same team
also remakes are usually made by less experienced dev teams, since the pros are making new games

Sure, I also played it but its a little more generic , for me og crash had 10/10 unique aestethics, remake 8/10 aestethics.
But desu desu I would recommend the remake to the original, its simply a better version , it is what it is man

>n64 screen shots in 16:9 or worse

MM3D unironically looks better.

not only is the art like traveling through a masterpiece, but the soundtrack feels that as well

Ape Escape > Spyro > Mario 64

From less known to more known kek

HATE CHANGE

>original is made by a Japanese studio who inspired by european fantasy chose a white male as their protagonist
>remake is made by cucked whites and turn the protagonist asian

>crash got remade
>only creative liberties taken have to do with textures
>spyro gets remade
>creative liberties out the ass, wildly changing set designs to something unrecognizable

Attached: 1535150839347.png (992x916, 752K)

>”Everything looks so much better and it feels much better too”
>retards tampering with Crash’s hit box yet trying to keep the level layout 1:1 makes half the game’s fucking jumps not work as intended
Yeah, real “definitive” there, champ.

This looks good to me, a lot more colour added

The changed jumps are barely noticeable aside from like three levels in Crash 1 and one bonus jump in 2.
Maybe you should stop being shit at videogames and learn how to press the jump button.

The 2 and 3 remakes are laziness incarnate.
It hilarious how they didn't even bother putting them on discs, and didn't even show it off until rather close to release. They fucked up.
Also, like the Crash remakes, the box art is really ugly. They need to fire the dude doing them.

nope

What game is this?

read the filename you fucking mouth breathing retard

>Remake has little to no identity of its own

In other news grass that's greener is still green.

i'm not a furry but.......

Because the 90sbabs are growing up but don't have as clear of a differentiation of their graphics compared to the new ones like boomers did in 2D pixel art vs modern 3D. I wonder what will the brown n bloom zoomers invent in order to claim the graphics were better in their own day.

Holy fuck, I'm almost glad I didn't play this when I was younger. I fap to Rouge enough, I don't need more furry fap bait

What's the name of the Lara Croft mouse?
I'm gonna masturbate to pictures of her.

Aside from the first one, the Spyro games have aged terribly. It's just full of tedious minigames, hardly a focus on platforming and exploration

Her name is Tara. iirc there's hardly any porn of her, sadly.

I got it out of my system when I was 9. Fapped to her like five times because her tits were 5x bigger than Lara Croft herself.

By golly, I wanna bang that bunny!

>old shitty graphics
SOUL
>new graphics
SOULLESS

Fuck these threads.

Autistics hate change. They've been screeching nearly none stop since reveal.

I want to fuck her in leglock while holding hands so hard

Attached: 1554310506343.png (209x313, 112K)

Normally I roll my eyes at all this "soulless" crap, but in the case of MM3D they genuinely did ruin it. They made all the character models so much worse than they used to be. It's awful.

that just means you're biased

1 is probably the worst one with all the changes they did to the overall design of the levels, only a very few amount of them are at least as good as the originals.

Picture unrelated, I'm guessing. Shit textures and polygon count doesn't make something have soul.

I still don't know what the fuck they were thinking with Elora.

>old good new bad thread

Attached: tifa.jpg (1280x720, 142K)

Early 3D arguably had the most difficult barriers to making stuff look good. Indeed, most games looked trash.

But of course, there were some bright minds that were able to overcome these harsh limitations and use as many techniques and ideas to do the best they could. If everyone's stuck with the same limitations, then other aspects like art style, colour design, character design are elevated in significance and can overcome those limits. Horror games were at their peak in the PS1 era because blurry low poly is the perfect vehicle for horror.

Remakes are the the most perfect example of how and why most modern games are lacking in any soul - they just follow trends or rely on graphical power. There's nobody with a real art education or background in those remake teams that could easily find a way to translate an art style to current gen without compromising its identity.
I mean hell, art education is trash these days, even regular dev teams are lacking in actual artists that know how much of the aesthetic process is defined by learning from the masters, or simple science.

Or do they

there's no way that's official

The muted color palette was there to hide graphical limitations.
