I never could stick with the story and the missions werent fun. Its fun to fuck around and it has a nice map. Its a good 3d sandbox proof of concept for gta games. VC and SA are better but its still really good.

I've always hated GTA with a passion. Someone rips off shenmue, adds in racing and writes a story around them that comes off like it was written by a 14 year old boy obsessed with scarface while dx pelvis chopping while listening to limp bizkit and kid rock yet tells me that this is a game made for adults!? You're going to say that shenmue didn't inspire the setup for grand theft auto at all? GTA 3 is basically a shallow shenmue with a goodfellas plot, replacing the immersive techniques with rampaging and driving.
Either way, inspire or not, it doesnt change the fact that grand theft autos was writtrn in crayon.

loved pretending like I was in goodfellas by doing mobster missions
loved the gangs being cliques like old times, the fact that you can work for 'the mob' then go do a job for 'the triads'
incredibly important game, big as mario 64, maybe more
but for everything gta3 did, vice city upped, especially with the narrative, celeb voice acting, goodfellas ray liotta in the mix, cotdamn
and SA just grew beyond that.. SA felt the most complete. games within games.
but man, being at the peak in vice city, collecting cash from your side businesses, any car you wanted, that felt so fun. too bad there really wasnt too much to do in the end.

No, SA feels a bit stretched thin for me. Most of the map is barely skimmed over. As well SA is where the narrative/tone problems started to develop. Rockstar wants to tell a serious character story but set in this wacky and sarcastic world and it makes CJ really inconsistent.
3 and Vice City have no tonal conflicts at all and the map is used in its entirety, especially in Vice City.
Don't get me wrong, SA is damned impressive with much better graphics and gunplay, and it does have lots of little details, but still some things were lost. I was always annoyed that the store-robbing mechanc was gone with fewer interiors it felt like.
